Paws Day Pass is so much more than just a fun outing for our dogs. It is one of the most important tools we have in helping these incredible dogs prepare for successful forever homes while also giving our inmate trainers real-world experience that simply cannot be taught inside the unit alone.
What began as a simple conversation about making a difference quickly grew into something far bigger than anyone imagined. The executives of Beyond the Bark, Leslie and Will, carried a passion for supporting a prison dog program and creating opportunities for both the dogs and the women dedicating themselves to rehabilitation inside the unit. Together with Paws in Prison Executive Director Catherine, the vision for Paws Day Pass came to life.
What they created was more than just an outing program. It became a bridge between second chances and forever homes. A way for dogs who had once been forgotten to experience the world beyond the prison gates, and for inmate trainers to gain real-world insight that strengthens every step of their training journey.
Every trip outside the facility becomes a learning opportunity. Whether a dog experiences excitement in a busy store, nervousness around new environments, distractions at a park, or uncertainty riding in a car, those moments provide valuable insight back to the women training them every day. The feedback from our volunteers allows trainers to troubleshoot behaviors, strengthen confidence, and continue shaping each dog into the very best version of themselves. These experiences help bridge the gap between structured training and real life.
For the dogs, Paws Day Pass builds socialization, confidence, adaptability, and trust. For the women in the program, it provides knowledge, growth, and the opportunity to see the direct impact of their dedication and hard work. Together, those lessons change lives on both ends of the leash.
But even the most beautiful ideas cannot thrive alone! Paws Day Pass may have been born from compassion and vision, but it is the community that gives it life. Every volunteer who signs up, every family who takes a dog on an adventure, every supporter who shows up with an open heart becomes part of the story. Without that continued support, these dogs miss opportunities to grow, learn, and shine in the environments they will someday call home.
We are always in need of more volunteers willing to give a few hours of their time to help our dogs experience the world beyond the prison gates. Even a single outing can make a tremendous difference in a dog’s journey toward adoption.
