Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society 2022 Scholarships

This is the season for scholarship awards to our very talented students. The past couple of years have not been kind to those musicians hoping for performance opportunities to pursue financial assistance that would make it possible to further their music education.

The Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society has presented six Treasure Coast musicians with scholarships this year. I'll give readers a little teaser for all but will feature each one separately over the summer.

  1. Tom Omans Memorial Merit Scholarship presented to Ish Aguilar
  2. Stanley & Susan Winters Memorial Merit Scholarship presented to Kyle Christy
  3. Anonymous Angel Merit Scholarship presented to Katie Vitale
  4. Norman & Sandra Stevenson Merit Scholarship presented to Sophia Liano
  5. The Anonymous Angel #2 Merit Scholarship presented to Patrick Gordon
  6. The Manny Lugo Memorial Merit Scholarship presented to Chris Gross

If you know of others who have won scholarships this year in any form of the arts, please share with Arts Blast. And if you're aware of organizations that have scholarship programs, let me know that, too.

Keep up with the FPJ&BS on Facebook and with the Milestones emagazine.

Patrick Gordon - Bass

Patrick ends his stay at Indian River Charter High School in 2022. He will spend his summer "practicing, studying, and listening to better cats. I am taking a condensed calculus course to prepare me for college, but most of my time will be spent practicing and relaxing. I’m hoping to enjoy these last few months of living in Florida by vacationing around the state. I may do some light gigging to keep me on my toes, but my main focus is to ensure a smooth transition into college."

Patrick is also the recipient of the Treasure Coast Jazz Society's scholarship, the Presidential Scholarship at the University of Hartford, and the First Baptist Church of Vero Beach Scholarship.

Sophia Liano - Vocal

Sophia is in the class of 2022 at South Fork High School and was a Pathfinder semi finalist.

She plans to attend University of Central Florida and pursue a double major in musical theatre/acting and Marine Biology.

Find her online on Instagram: @sophialiano

"I’m spending my summer preparing for college and my future at University of Central Florida. I am forever grateful to the Jazz Society for the opportunity and I’m excited to kickstart my future!"

Isaias Aguilar - Trumpet

Isaias, better known as Ish in music circles, ends his days at Okeechobee High School in 2022. In addition to the trumpet, he plays French horn and euphonium.

He was awarded the art scholarship and the Promise scholarship from Indian River State College as well as a scholarship from Raulerson Hospital.

What does summer have in store? "I am going to Peru for two weeks with my family. When I come back I will be working in a nursing home as a CNA and will go to the advanced band camp offered by the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society. I will also be practicing every day in the summer so I can eventually perform again with the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society."

Kyle Christy - Piano

Kyle leaves Martin County High School this year but isn't finished with his education:  "I'll be studying mechanical engineering at University of Central Florida, later getting a masters in aerospace engineering".

In addition to piano, Kyle lists Concert Percussion, Marching Percussion, Mallet Percussion, Piano/Synthesizer, and Accordion as his instruments.

To go along with this scholarship, "I'll be receiving Bright Futures and I have received the Dr. Roadman Scholarship," Kyle said.

This summer,  "I'll be working, studying, and practicing to become the best I can be."

Katie Vitale - Vocal

Katie is in the 2022 graduating class at Jensen Beach High School. Her instruments are trumpet and voice.

She's part of the very talented Vitale family, currently with two released songs and more scheduled for this summer. Hear the family's music by searching “The Vitale Family” on Spotify, YouTube, or Amazon Music.

Katie has plans for summer: "I will be traveling to Paris and Italy in June and will be a bridesmaid in my sister’s wedding in July! I will also be attending the Broadway Artists Intensive at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach. This is a three week training program with classes taught by Broadway professionals. I also plan on traveling to NYC to visit some family and to see some shows on Broadway! I’m so excited for this summer!"

Chris Gross - Tenor Sax

Chris Gross was not available in time for this Arts Blast.

For his Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society scholarship performance, he played Girl From Ipanema and Lost Star.

The First Presbyterian Youth String Orchestra will present a Spring Concert on Sunday, May 29, 2022, at 2:00pm in the sanctuary at First Presbyterian Church, 520 Royal Palm Boulevard, Vero Beach. Artists Support Vero Beach Art Village in Exhibit

More than 30 prominent local artists have contributed their work to support the development of the Vero Beach Art Village. An exhibit of this work, ending May 28 has been on display at Raw Space Gallery.

“We put out a call to local artists to support the new Art Village downtown and were gratified that more than 30 prominent local artists responded,” said John Ryan, president of the Friends of the Vero Beach Art Village. This is just the kind of support we need to make the new Art Village a success”

The Vero Beach Art Village is a reimagining of the historical Edgewood neighborhood in the city’s downtown area as a living celebration of the arts. Its zoning as a special purpose district allows a mixed residential and commercial environment where artists and other small merchants can live, work, and sell their art. Visit the website at verobeachartvillage.com.
