I hope this finds you all well. What a crazy month it has been since my July newsletter! With more demand than supply, we continue to see a market that is bringing high prices and a fast-paced selling process. Buyers are inventing new ways to rise to the top of the offers. This can be dangerous for both buyers and sellers because there are legal ramifications for just about every decision that a buyer will make. Some of you may have heard about the fire around Finley Point on the East Shore that broke out on August 7th. Dubbed the Boulder 2700 Fire, it descended the mountainside near Finley Point and headed toward Flathead Lake, growing to more than 1,000 acres and burning 15 to 20 homes. An evacuation order was issued on Sunday from mile-markers 6 to 13 on Highway 35 and all of Finley Point. The Red Cross opened a shelter for evacuees at the Linderman Gymnasium in Polson and volunteers rallied at Murdoch’s in Polson to take care of displaced livestock. People in the area opened their homes to anyone who was evacuated and my heart goes out to those of you who lost property. Unfortunately, fires have become a fact of life with our clear, warm August days and breezy nights. Please be careful if you are camping. A fire can start so easily. As I write this newsletter, blessed rain is falling in the Flathead and clearing our skies that will soon be big, bright, and blue. We look forward to fall and the market just keeps on humming.

About a month ago, John and I brought Ceri, a lop-eared Corgi, into our home. We have had all sorts of doggies in our life, but we were not prepared for Ceri! She's one of a kind and her antics are classic. So funny on a daily basis, I want to share her with you all. So...Ceri's Corner is born. I hope you enjoy Ceri's shenanigans. We sure do!

Denise's Cooking Corner - Arugula Salad with Peaches, Goat Cheese and Basil

This simple, quintessential summer salad is a reminder that seasonal ingredients are at their very best and don’t need much fussing (or cooking).
INGREDIENTS
¼ cup pine nuts
¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons champagne vinegar or white wine vinegar
½ teaspoon kosher salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
4 to 5 ounces baby arugula
2 ripe peaches, pitted and cut into 1/4-inch slices (about 10 ounces)
½ cup julienned fresh basil leaves
2 ounces creamy goat cheese, crumbled (about ½ cup), plus more to taste
PREPARATION
In a small sauté pan, toast the pine nuts over medium heat, tossing often, until golden brown, about 3 minutes. Remove from the heat. In a small liquid measuring cup or bowl, whisk together the olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper.
Place the arugula in a large salad bowl. Pour just enough dressing over the greens to moisten, and toss to coat. Add the peaches, basil, goat cheese and toasted pine nuts and toss to coat. Add more goat cheese and dressing if desired. Toss gently and serve immediately.

Denise's Book Corner - Educated by Tara Westover
|
|
“Part of me will always believe that my father’s words ought to be my own,” Westover writes. If her book is an act of defiance, a way to set the record of her own life straight, it’s also an attempt to understand, even to respect, those whom she had to break away from in order to get free.
The author's circumstances may be extreme, yet her words hold a universal theme that speaks to all of us. Educated is Tara’s memoir of her journey from an unschooled girlhood, believing all her father taught her, to a Ph.D. in history from Cambridge University.
Westover was born sometime in September, 1986—no birth certificate was issued. She came from a remote mountain location in Idaho, the seventh child of Mormon survivalist parents who subscribed to a paranoid patchwork of beliefs well outside the mandates of their religion...the government was always about to invade, the End of Days was always at hand.
Westover’s mother worked as a midwife and an herbal healer. Her father, who claimed prophetic powers, owned a scrap yard, where his children labored without the benefit of protective equipment. (Westover recounts hideous and frequent accidents).
Lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. She taught herself enough mathematics and grammar to be admitted to Brigham Young University. Her quest for knowledge eventually took her to Harvard and Cambridge. Her story is an account of her struggle for self-invention, fierce and gripping family loyalty and the grief that comes with severing family ties.
My wish to all heading to school this fall amid the current challenges, I hope this year is full of the joy of learning.
