Northwest Designer

NNWDC LogoWDC has a rich legacy as one of the founding groups of what became America's Studio Movement. The Studio Movement is what the Arts & Crafts Movement evolved into after mass manufacturing won out over hand-crafted production. I am proud to be a member of this historic group that is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of contemporary art, while upholding the heritage of the hand-crafted in an over mechanized world. I am honored to be in the company of an amazing group of artists and craftspeople.

Roycroft Renaissance LogoAs a Master Artisan of the Roycroft Renaissance, I have the honor and distinction of working to uphold an important part of America's artistic legacy, as well as the responsibility to keep alive the spirit of art as manifested throughout the ages. It is a rare opportunity and I see it as a great responsibility.

 Basking in Summer

WOW! It has been a busy Summer that is slipping by way too fast. Although we are fortunate to be able to do the work that we love, our friends can attest that we aren't very good at finding balance and making time for play. This year we promised to make more time to enjoy our beautiful Oregon Summer - and we've done a pretty good job of keeping our commitment!

We've been spending time enjoying our front porch and the backyard garden that was 5 years in the making. We've also had some great invitations to explore the Northwest: we went camping with friends in Summer Lake, OR and spent our birthdays in Seaview, WA. Next month, we're off again for yurt camping with friends at Tumulo State Park in OR.

We are thrilled that our clients have kept us busy this season, making finding time for our sojourns a challenge for us! Barbara has spent most of the Summer making clients happy by transforming their homes with color. When CJ is not at the drafting table designing something for an historic home, he is locked in the studio working on a new series of paintings. As a public grant recipient, he's got a big obligation to keep!

The end of Summer has been punctuated this year as we watch a close family friend head off for his freshman year of college! The reality of change hit us as we helped pack boxes for his dorm. We are excited to see Tyler head off for new adventures and life experiences, and his departure has better prepared us for the stream of kids in our lives that will soon follow in his footsteps.

We hope you are having a great season and that your Summer has been filled with lasting memories.

New Greeting Cards
We need your votes....  Help us decide!

You have asked many times and we have heard you!  A few years ago, we timidly printed our first greeting cards and you've been asking for more ever since.

Vote on the paintings you think we should use next for printed greeting cards.

Intern, Jessica Chen, has put together a selection of some of her favorites for you to choose from.

Click here for a larger view of the options and choose the two that you would like to see us print on cards.

Send an email to intern@cjhurley and give us the numbers that correspond to the art you selected (1-6).  Jessica will be designing the cards based on the winners and we will go to print soon!

Thanks for participating!

Madeleine Parish and School

We are thrilled to be the painting consultants on the exterior of Portland's Iconic Madeleine Parish. Our work began in the spring of 2012 with a comprehensive color consultation. Painting got underway last month and we've been actively involved in every detail from developing color placement specifications to working with Sherwin Williams to obtain perfect color matches.  Past color clients know how important all of these details are!

The original Madeleine Parish was designed by noted architect Joseph Jacobberger and built in 1912.  Since the construction of the original building, the campus has seen many expansions and alterations.  A primary goal of our colorwork was to unite all of the buildings while paying tribute to the original architecture and the historic Irvington neighborhood.

Meet Our Summer Interns
 Jennifer Tabor

Jennifer Tabor is an Interdisciplinary Studies student at Marylhurst University where she has focused on Photography and Interior Design.  Her internship is the final requirement for her degree and she will receive 3 credit hours. She is spending her summer with us developing her architectural photography abilities, honing her understanding of color and working on presentation skills.  She has a strong sense for composition and has been putting that to practice behind the camera.  She has enjoyed the opportunity to photograph several client exteriors.

Jessica Chen

Jessica Chen is an incoming senior at the University of Oregon in the Digital Arts and Cinema Studies program. She is doing a graphic design internship with us this summer and is also working with Barbara on design projects for the Architectural Heritage Center.  Jessica recently returned from London where she did a study abroad program and interned at a branding agency.  Her internship is focused on giving her broader design exposure, developing professional presentation skills and gaining a better sense of her career goals.  We are impressed with the creativity and design talent Jessica is showcasing.

Exterior Consultations
With summer in full swing, Barbara has been busy with exterior color consultations. Color design is a favorite aspect of her job, so she is a happy camper at this time of year!

We've had requests to share before and after photos of our projects and we've been working on getting a more thorough photo album set up on facebook.  You can enjoy some of our projects here.  Check back again as we'll keep adding as time allows.

In The Studio

For most of this year, CJ has been in the studio creating new mixed media paintings supported by a Project Grant awarded by the Regional Arts and Culture Council.

We'll report more next month on exhibit plans and the progress of this highly involved mixed media series.
