CAFES Celebrates Scholarships and Awards
The spring celebration went on even without the banquet. Students were invited to pick up their scholarship certificates personally from Dean of CAFES, Dale Gallenberg. A balloon swag at the room entrance and a free treat from Freddy's Dairy Bar helped make the day a bit special. We were pleased to have 3 new scholarships among the 162 scholarships totaling over $181,000 that were awarded to continuing CAFES students this year:
- Central Wisconsin Cheesemakers and Buttermakers Scholarship
-
Louis and Barbara Greub Scholarship - established by Emeritus Professor Lou Greub (1963) to honor his late wife, the first woman to earn an agronomy degree from Iowa State University.
-
George and Betty Schmit Family Scholarship - established by Dr. Todd Schmit (1990) to honor his parents.

Intercollegiate competitions slowly returned in spring
Although many events were cancelled, a few, such as Dairy Challenge moved to a virtual competition, while others made a cautious return to an in-person event. Both the Crops Judging Team and the Meat Animal Evaluation Team were able to travel to competitions, the Crops Team even made two trips! They headed to Nebraska in March and then to Hutchinson, Kansas in April for the Blue Dragon Classic crops judging contest. The team enjoyed the early spring weather in Kansas! Team members were: Paige Stofferahn-Muck. Mitchell Oswald, Conner Geurtz, Mark Kortbein, and Barrent Herman.

Share your wisdom and experience!
|
|
Think about all you've learned since 2008! Consider sharing that wisdom with a current student. Over the past year a group of alumni have been working diligently to develop the framework for a mentor program. If you have some time and are willing to share your experiences with a current student let us know. We'll follow up later this summer to get more information from you. If you responded to an earlier request for mentors, we'll be in touch with you too later this summer. A pilot program will launch this fall. CAFES alumni of all ages are welcome!
