SUMMER READING - IT'S IMPORTANT!
|
|
While the Summer Learning Challenge is FUN, it is also IMPORTANT. Our friends at Redwood City School District recently sent their newsletter to families highlighting the importance of summer reading. Because we couldn't have said it better ourselves, we're reprinting it here for you!
Reading over the summer months - reading for pleasure - really does make a difference to your child’s learning. Students gain a better sense of themselves and their world through reading literature and rich non-fiction for pleasure. Research shows that K-8 students who read four or more books over the summer are better prepared for the coming school year and do not go down the ‘summer slide’—the loss of reading and learning skills that can occur during the summer break.
Here are five easy-to-implement ways you can help your child reduce summer reading loss [for detailed recommendations read the full article HERE]:
- Guide them to recognize that reading is important.
- Give your child the power of choice.
- Set aside time to read every day.
- If your child is learning to read, read to, or with your child, talk about the pictures, and guide them to make connections with their own lives and experiences.
- Talk it up. Talking about books during and after reading helps improve comprehension.
-
Be part of a reading challenge. Redwood City Public Library has a 2022 Summer Reading Challenge program to help engage and motivate K-8 readers.
Thanks, RCSD, for the shout-out!

Congratulations are in order to our amazing Friends of the Redwood City Public Library on the occasion of their 50th Anniversary. This past Sunday's party held in celebration of their birthday and the Summer Learning Challenge was a grand success. $.50 books were sold, games were played, lemonade was served and ice cream was enjoyed by over 650 folks.
We encourage you to read this Redwood City Pulse article about the Friends. Friends is entirely volunteer led and all book sale proceeds pay for Summer Learning Challenge and many other Library programs. We could not do what we do without the Friends!
