"Our analysis shows that public health campaigns are working - fewer teens are smoking cigarettes," said lead author, Methodology Center Scientific Director Stephanie Lanza. "However, we were surprised to find the very clear message that kids are choosing marijuana over cigarettes." Lanza and colleagues used the time-varying effect model (TVEM) to analyze data collected as part of the Monitoring the Future study of U.S. high school seniors between 1976 and 2013.

New Grant: TVEM to Understand Drug Abuse

Methodology Center researchers have been awarded a new grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to study the epidemiology of drug abuse. They will apply the time-varying effect model (TVEM) to two national studies of health-risk behaviors: the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent to Adult Health and recent data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. These large data sets will allow the research team to examine the age-varying role of mental health problems in drug use, demographic differences in drug use trends, and how specific risk and protective factors are associated with drug use across age. Results from their research will be featured in the eNews as they are published.
