June 2025 News

Carlisle Summerfair Fun

Charles Bruce Foundation is once again having fun at the Carlisle Summerfair on Saturday, June 28 from 9 am - 3 pm at the campus at Dickinson College. As a central part of the artisan displays and sales, blanket makers are invited to come with crochet hooks or knitting needles (or other ideas) and make a blanket for a person experiencing homelessness. Blankets will be displayed on December 21, 2025 with distribution immediately following.

Need more reason to get outside? Come be part of a community paint along! We'll supply the paint and brushes, and you supply the talent. This is becoming quite the tradition of sponsoring Pennsylvania's largest paint by number!

NOTE: If it's rainy that day, the paint by number will be postponed to another community event.

A million thanks to Artist and Legend Phil George who drew the picture of Molly and to Chad Bruce who modified it for painting.

While this event is happening at the Dickinson Campus - the artwork will be on display at Molly Pitcher Brewing - West High Street, Carlisle. Molly's is a proud member of the Downtown Carlisle Association and long time supporter of the Charles Bruce Foundation.

As always, we thank you for volunteering to help make these events a success. We can't wait to share the day with you!

Back in the Music Business

“The Cement Mixer” will take place on Friday, June 27 from 6 – 9 p.m. at the Carlisle Ribbon Mill, 320 E. Louther St. Our very good friends at Carlisle Tool Library are hosting this gala to raise funds to support its mission to provide access to over 1,000 shared tools, workshop space, and educational resources to the residents of Cumberland County and the surrounding counties. Tickets cost $50 per person and are available for purchase online at carlisletoollibrary.org or in-person at the Carlisle Tool Library, 735 Factory St. during their regular business hours.

Charles Bruce Foundation is sponsoring the evening's musical entertainment with local country jazz trio, Sons of Pitches. Additionally, the night will feature a silent auction, dinner provided by Mountain Laurel Catering, and local beer and wine selections provided by Molly Pitcher Brewing Company and Castlerigg Wine Shop

We love Carlisle Tool Library because they empower members with the tools and know-how to improve and maintain their living spaces, pursue DIY projects, and cultivate new skills. Since opening in April 2018, members have borrowed 10,500 tools. In addition to its extensive selection of tools to borrow, from a cement mixer to a wet tile saw to sewing machines, the tool library also offers members a fully equipped woodshop. The Carlisle Tool Library is home to two other community resources: the Bike Lab, which provides low-cost bike repairs and equipment, and the Carlisle Seed Library, which offers free seeds to anyone in the community.

Stating the Case for Gun Reform

June is Gun Violence Awareness Month! What better time for the Pennsylvania State Library to hold a virtual Lunch and Learn panel discussion for American Roulette with Pat LaMarche and fellow authors from noon until 1 pm on June 24th.

If you haven't yet read the book, it takes place in a world where fiction meets the harsh reality of our times. A group of eclectic authors unveil a blockbuster thriller that takes readers on a suspenseful journey through the lives of diverse characters whose paths intersect at the site of a mass shooting at a local mall. Through meticulous storytelling and vivid character development, the book transcends the boundaries of genre, offering readers a powerful exploration of gun violence, its aftermath, and the continuing challenge it poses to our nation.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, the number of mass shootings in the United States has nearly doubled in the past five years, with the 647 mass shootings in 2022 resulting in 673 deaths and 2,700 injuries.
