We're still looking for the currently cat-less person out there who can offer our late artist friend Arlia Almond's Kino a loving, one-cat home. All he needs is an empty lap and an indoor spot to curl up for a day of napping and nature gazing. He has several years of experience living with an artist, reader, and fellow napper, and will bring his own toys and dishes. Email Julie Lounibos if you have any leads. JulieLounibos@gmail.com

Drama is Fun at VBHS Summer Camp
The numbers will be smaller this year but the fun factor just as big for campers in the 2021 Vero Beach High School summer camp. Dee Rose, head of the drama department at VBHS for well over 30 years, filled me in on how it will work in this unusual year.

Students from any county are eligible to sign up, Rose said. "It isn't limited to only locally. We have had campers from up north that were visiting grandparents attend." She cautioned that because of Covid, only 36 students will be accepted, rather than the 40-60 in past years. "We will be following any and all CDC guidelines in place when we hold camp."

Campers' ages range from entering 2nd grade to entering 9th grade in the fall. It's a wide range but "it works ... somehow ... it works wonderfully," Rose said. For counselors, "I use my theatre competition troupe members, cleared through the county school district as workers. Many of the summer camp counselors are past campers themselves."

Their responsibilities are varied. "The counselors do theatre games with the campers, get them from place to place in the camp, do check-in in the morning and check-out at the end of the day, and dry tears when we have a 'booboo'," Rose said.

Students get a well-rounded experience, Rose explained. They learn "a full musical, with music and full orchestra, lights, sound, costumes, set, etc., just like a high school production would be." The counselors run the show technically while the campers perform in the show. This year, it's Madagascar JR, and camp dates are June 14-25. Performances will be June 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m.

Registration form is available online.
Please note that seating is limited for all concerts. Social distancing and masks are required for all attendees.

Indulge Your Green Thumb and Artistic Side with
Fort Pierce Garden Club and Indian River Clay
There are a couple of opportunities to get your garden growing this weekend. The Fort Pierce Garden Club is having its spring sale May 1, 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. at 911 Parkway Dr (Georgia and 10th Street), Fort Pierce. Last year's sale went the way of so many other events but the club is ready to go with the 2021 Indoor Boutique and Outdoor Plant Sale, a fundraiser for the club's community projects and scholarship program.

Dotty Greene, who keeps Arts Blast up to date on club activities, sent this:

The warm, sunny weather that the Treasure Coast has been enjoying has many itching to dig back into their gardens. Just in time, Garden Club of Fort Pierce has brought back its Spring Plant Sale.

Last year's sale, like so many other events, was canceled due to the pandemic. Organizers are ready to welcome you on May 1 with some fantastic locally grown plants.

The sale will feature an indoor shop to serve as our fabulous-finds boutique sale and outdoor shop with plants. Plan on joining us for this once-a-year sale!

Gently used housewares, decorations, and various other items can be found for sale inside the yellow, historic garden center club building located at the corner of S 10th and Georgia Ave. After you have shopped inside, step outside to our beautiful grounds and peruse the perennials, annuals, exotics, and houseplants for sale outside.

The plants sold at our sale are from the gardens of our members and their families and friends. And we are here to help answer your questions and to find the right plant for your garden site (sun, shade, color, height, size, soil conditions, or ease of growing).
The potters of Indian River Clay in Vero Beach will combine Plants and Pottery in their sale May 1. IRC members have been busy creating orchid planters and handcrafted flower pots for this fundraiser. Proceeds will benefit the Indian River Clay Capital Campaign.

The Indian River Clay Garden Plants & Pottery Sale is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 1 at the studio, 1239 16th St., Vero Beach.

Downtown Friday in Vero Beach!
April ends on a festive note in Vero Beach with Downtown Friday, 6 - 9 p.m. April 30. Everyone's invited to the monthly street party in the 14th Avenue area. There will be live music, food vendors, and craft beer from Walking Tree. Small businesses and Community Groups will have booths and the atmosphere is family-friendly.

From Main Street Vero Beach Executive Director Sue Gromis, "Lots of new vendors - people are so happy to be back! Come check it out!"
Looking ahead, Gromis said, "Xaque Gruber will be the MSVB featured artist for May with his show 'Earth’s Natural Gifts.' Main Street is looking for guest artists for June-July-August, for our gallery wall at special summer rates."
From McKee, to Mom, With Love
McKee Botanical Garden has its traditional community-friendly spring and summer planned, and it begins with Mother's Day, May 9. Who doesn't love a BOGO, especially when it's combined with a chance to give Mom a grand day out in lush surroundings?

As always, "Mom" is defined loosely on her day, Christine Hobart, McKee's executive director reminds us. "All moms, grandmothers, mothers-in-law or someone who is like a mother to you are included in this special admission." Here's how it works: You pay for admission on Mother's Day and your Mom-figure gets to enjoy "the natural landscape of majestic palms, exotic plants, trees, waterfalls, tranquil streams, and peaceful surroundings throughout the Garden" at no charge.

The gift shop will be open if you'd like to add to the day with a special gift. One that will last and spread your love through this country, Canada, and the Caribbean is a gift membership. McKee participates in the American Horticultural Society Reciprocal Admissions Program, meaning she can show her card at more than 300 other horticultural institutions and be welcomed as a guest.

If you time it right, you can treat her to lunch, too. The Garden Café is open from noon to 3 p.m. on Mother's Day.
Student Workshops July 26 - August 7
Must-Do May at Morikami
Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens has a busy month ahead. A new exhibition opens May 8 and runs through September 19. Painting Enlightenment: Experiencing Wisdom and Compassion through Art and Science, features “the indelible works of famed Japanese scientist and artist Iwasaki Tsuneo (1917-2002). The paintings create a contemplative journey and meditations on the interconnectedness of the universe. “

Learn the subtleties of Sado: Tea Ceremony in classes for beginners and those with some knowledge of the tradition with hands-on guidance from instructor Yoshiko Hardik. Note that the ceremony changes from month to month and season to season, so if you’ve taken one class, be prepared to absorb something new.

Classes in Ikebana flower arrangement and Sumi-E ink painting are offered for beginners and intermediate-level students. Intermediate level classes in Ikebana are for students who have experience or have taken at least three sessions of Ikebana at Morikami. A Sado: The Way of Tea demonstration is scheduled for May 15
Preregistration is required for workshops, classes, and demonstrations. Be aware that space is limited. Due to COVID-19, all programming is subject to change. Always check the website for updates and/or cancellations.

Mother’s Day is a special day with Family Fun: Mother’s Day Nuigurumi a free, online activity. “Nuigurumi is the Japanese word for a stuffed toy or plushie. Create your own no-sew mini animal plushie using Japanese folding techniques on fabric.”

On the Morikami campus that day, watch a film screening, Kubo and the Two Strings by Travis Knight. Charlize Theron and Matthew McConaughey lend their voices to this animated film about Kubo, who “mesmerizes the people in his village with his magical gift for spinning wild tales with origami. When he accidentally summons an evil spirit seeking vengeance, Kubo is forced to go on a quest to solve the mystery of his fallen samurai father and his mystical weaponry, as well as discover his own magical powers.”

Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, 4000 Morikami Park Road, Delray Beach, is online at morikami.org, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
