Coming Soon - A String Camp & Music Festival!

In a few weeks, fiddler Lauren Rioux will be heading back to Vero Beach for her 14th year with the Mike Block String Camp and Vero Beach International Music Festival. The Scarborough, Maine, resident wears more than one musical hat, playing "5 String Fiddle, violin and viola, Old Time Banjo, Piano, and I like to sing." It all started when she was in first grade in Orlando. Her elementary school had a Suzuki string program and Rioux was a natural. The following year, the family moved to rural Down East Maine and found a teacher close enough to continue lessons. Later, "I grew up driving 2.5 hours one way for youth orchestra every weekend."

In her college years at Osher School of Music, Rioux studied violin performance and music education and attended conferences where she saw kids performing "fiddle tunes and multi generational jams. I heard about 'fiddle camps' and signed up for one the following summer. The experience was life-changing ... ." After graduation, Rioux went all in on learning and performing folk music and non-classical styles. Her teaching career began in 1999, she said, and "over the years I have helped hundreds of students express themselves through music."

As a mother of two young children, Rioux doesn't go on the road to perform very often these days. "I have a private studio with students ranging from 5-75, I run a website with courses, books and a blog (https://www.jamwithlauren.com/), and I introduce violin to 4th and 5th graders at my son’s school." During the summer, the fiddler travels as a clinician for educators and students, and performs at music camps and festivals.

It was at one of those fiddle camps that she and Mike Block connected as classical musicians looking for other creative outlets. "Eventually we both ended up playing in the same band and touring together for a few years. When the opportunity arose for him to start this camp in Vero Beach, we had lots of shared musical and educational experiences, and he invited me to teach at his first camp."

Rioux took time for a Q&A session for Arts Blast this week:

What do you enjoy most about working with students?

That they’re all so eager, and willing to take risks. The skills we work on at MBSC are a very different set of tools than we use in the classical world. It really boils down to being comfortable enough to trust your decision making skills. Sometimes those decisions are made in rehearsals, and other times you make them in the moment.

How are the age groups similar or different?

There’s a wide age range at camp. I think the biggest span has been maybe 7-70? But usually the youngest student is around 10. There are beginners, intermediates, advanced, and professionals of every age. Well, there aren’t 10 year old professionals. Yet. But we have an adult amateur class and we have adult professionals as well. Their similarities are that they all care enough to be there, working on being better musicians and humans. Their differences are how they process taking risks. Kids are used to learning. They try, maybe fail, and are used to trying again. Most adults are used to streamlining in their professions and focus more on mastery instead of acquiring new skills. It’s a little harder to let go of being self-conscious. I applaud all of them for trusting us (the faculty) and taking the leap.

What’s your favorite part of this experience?

That’s too hard! My favorite parts: I love that people come from all over the world to learn about music and themselves. I love the faculty concerts- hearing collaborations and performances that are unique to each year. I love returning to Vero Beach year after year and seeing local kids grow up into fantastic adults. I really love the tradition of awarding and passing along the Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin. It’s a special week.

Talk about the jamming experience:

Well, the name of my website is JamWithLauren, so you might gather that I’m a big proponent of jamming. A jam session is akin to a science lab, where you can go test out your hypotheses and try experiment after experiment. Some are thrilling, some are duds. But trying out these musical ideas is crucial for growth, and once you have processed the data and are confident in your findings, a jam can be really inspiring. It can also be a good representation of celebrating our differences. At an MBSC jam, you see multiple generations of varying abilities all participating by making music at a level that works for them.

Where can people hear you?

I’ll be performing at the Vero Beach International Music Festival, and you can find me pretty easily on YouTube by searching my name. Or you can listen/buy my album on BandCamp https://laurenrioux.bandcamp.com/album/all-the-brighter

What’s ahead for you musically?

I’m in the process of developing a new course that I’ll film this fall. I’m looking forward to more practice time as my daughter starts preschool this September. More practice time means writing more tunes, which always excites me.

I don’t think any artist is truly satisfied and announces an arrival point in their career of creativity. To arrive is to pretty much declare the journey is over. I’m planning on this being a life long adventure, and looking forward to more recording, producing and performing again, and building new curriculums to support students.

Patriotic Music in Concert

Put on your red, white and blue and get ready to wave the flag when the Space Coast Symphony Wind Orchestra presents its free patriotic concert, Spirit of America, showcasing our American heritage.

Conductor and artistic director Aaron T. Collins directs the wind orchestra in the Star Spangled Banner, God Bless the USA by Lee Greenwood, and other favorites that include America the Beautiful. Also on the program is David Holsinger’s thrilling and powerful work, To Tame the Perilous Skies, dedicated "not only to the exceptional men and women of the Tactical Air Command, but to the spirit of the modern military aviator." Among the many rousing patriotic numbers will be a salute to those who served in the United States Armed Forces; veterans will be asked to stand when their service song is played. Attendees to Spirit of America can also count on plentiful marches from The March King, John Philip Sousa. Rounding out the program is the World Premiere of Christopher Marshall’s composition Pulse. This powerful work is a response to the 2016 Florida massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Marshall's hometown of Orlando. Pulse gives musical expression to a full range of emotions – from grief to anger to consolation. Concert goers to Spirit of America are invited to wear red, white and blue in a show of patriotic solidarity. Free tickets to the Saturday performance can be reserved online at www.SpaceCoastSymphony.org. Donations to help defray the concert costs will be accepted with gratitude. The Florida Humanities Center for the Book has selected “Dreams in the New Century: Instant Cities, Shattered Hopes, and Florida’s Turning Point” by Gary R. Mormino and “The Bluest Sky” by Christina Diaz Gonzalez to represent the state at the Library of Congress’ “Great Reads from Great Places” program during the National Book Festival in Washington, D.C.

The Library of Congress National Book Festival is an annual literary event that brings together best-selling authors, poets and illustrators with thousands of readers for book talks, panel discussions, book signings and other engaging activities. Over the course of its 20-year history, the Festival has become one of the most prominent literary events in the nation.

The National Book Festival was founded in 2001 by Laura Bush and then-Librarian of Congress James H. Billington. The first Festival was held Sept. 8, 2001, with Mrs. Bush serving as its honorary chair, a position she held through 2008.

Over the years, the Festival has evolved immensely, becoming the nation’s premier literary event. It began on the Library of Congress grounds and in its buildings on Capitol Hill, expanding soon thereafter to the lawn of the Capitol and then to the National Mall. The Washington Convention Center has hosted the event in recent years, and now, in 2020, the Festival is going virtual. Attendance has skyrocketed from 25,000 in 2001 to more than 200,000 in 2019. Author involvement in the festival has also increased dramatically: While roughly 40 authors participated in the first festival, the 2015 National Book Festival featured more than 175 authors.

The festival is funded by private donors and corporate sponsors who share the Library’s commitment to reading and literacy. Since 2010, National Book Festival Co-Chairman David M. Rubenstein has been the festival’s lead benefactor.

Festival Information

The 23rd annual Library of Congress National Book Festival will be held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, August 12, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (doors open at 8:30 a.m.). The event is free and open to the public. A selection of programs will be livestreamed online and videos of all programs will be available shortly after the Festival. Attendees may expect enhanced safety and security measures when entering the Convention Center.

The 2023 National Book Festival poster was designed by fine artist, illustrator and writer Lisa Congdon.
