What We're Up To
May and June

May:

In May, we hosted 15 field trips! Participants included preschoolers, elementary school students, and families. National School District field trips concluded for the school year with visits from 4th graders who studied the plant reproduction, practiced soil building, and made their own fruit and yogurt parfaits.

We continued to grow our partnerships in nature- and garden-based education by conducting a Garden Enhanced Nutrition Education teacher training and hosting a San Diego Children and Nature Network meeting on Regional School Garden Sustainability.

Also in May:
  • We hosted a tour for the San Diego Master Gardeners, Deep Yoga Outdoor Bliss Classes, a Volunteer Orientation, and a Food and Farm Family Fun Day.
  • We set-up info booths at Sprouts Chula Vista and the National School District Family Health and Wellness Fair.

June:
  • We will host field trips from the San Ysidro Health Center, O'Farrell Community School, and Summercrest Apartments.
  • Olivewood will have its 5th annual Day of Play event. This popular free family event will include cooking, gardening, crafts, and more for the community!

Featured Recipe:
Homemade Granola Yogurt Parfaits
Created by Jamie Weisman

Ingredients for Toasted Oats (base for granola)
1 cup rolled oats
2 teaspoons vegetable oil or coconut oil
2 teaspoons agave

Directions for Toasted Oats (base for granola)
1. Preheat oven to 300?.

2. Mix ingredients in a bowl and pour onto baking sheet in a single layer.

3. Bake for 10 minutes, stir oats and shake pan so oats spread out again, and bake for 10 more minutes (a total of 20 minutes baking time).

4. Let cool completely before adding nuts, dried fruit, etc. to complete your granola. The oats will crisp up as they sit.

Ways to Flavor your Granola!

  • You can add dried fruit such as dried cranberries, cherries, apricots, raisins, chopped dates, toasted coconut flakes...
  • You can add seeds such as sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, unsalted sunflower seeds...
  • You can add nuts such as almonds, cashews, walnuts, pecans...

Enjoy over yogurt or as a bowl of cereal in milk... and be sure to add lots of fresh fruit!
