Summertime Observations

UVLT interns Cora Day and Ella Barrett plant tomato seedlings at Brookmead Food Pantry Garden.

Let's hear it for (and from!) our Interns!

Summertime is... gardens and woods and volunteers and conservation easements, and bears (oh my!).

We are incredibly grateful to UVLT summer interns, Ella Barrett and Cora Day, and are excited to share some of their observations, in their own words. Check out the blogs from Ella and Cora to read more from them, including multiple black bear encounters, time well spent in the food pantry gardens, and the installation of a permanent 8-foot perimeter fence. It's a lot of hard work, but our team sure makes it feel like a LOT of fun!

What's Happening at UVLT

Trails, farmland, woods, wetlands, and room for housing!

UVLT’s acquisition and establishment of the 75-acre Timotheus Pohl property in Hartland, VT will provide many conservation benefits and fulfill long standing community goals. We’re thrilled by the success of the campaign for this property: 75 acres including high-quality hayfields, mixed hardwood forest, and the hub of a 25-kilometer trail system managed by Hartland Winter Trails, an all-volunteer Nordic ski and snowshoe group. Tornado impacts conserved land in Lyme

On July 17th, a tornado, confirmed by the National Weather Service to be a FW1 event, formed over Post Pond and touched down along the conserved buffer by Clay Brook before crossing farm fields north of Whipple Hill. Packing winds near 110 MPH, and following a nearly 1.8 mile path, the system took down about 1000 trees. Fortunately, no people or animals were harmed during this wild weather system.

Did you know that natural disturbances can be beneficial for forests? Curious as to why? Read more here.

Why is August make-a-will month? We don’t know! But, perhaps like the reading lists many students take up this time of year, you’ll find that creating or updating your will is easier and more fun than you expected. It’s about taking care of who and what you care about. It’s empowerment and peace of mind. And it feels good. So why wait?

Now is the time to share your love and vision in your will. You can get started at no cost today. The Freewill tool on our website can help you prepare information for a meeting with estate planning advisors, or if you prefer, you can create a free legal will online.
