Tomorrow! 2e Private School Panel Presentation from REEL
Parents of 2e learners often have trouble finding an ideal learning environment for their child. REEL presents a virtual panel discussion tomorrow, Oct. 13 at 7:00 pm for parents on 2e Private Schools in the SF Bay Area. Learn about the five non-negotiable elements of a school environment for 2e learners. Then hear from parents whose 2e children have attended both private and public schools as well as from local schools expert Dr. Lisa White of Summit Center. Hear about about the pros and cons of various learning environments, the signs it’s time to make a change, and the process of finding a good-fit school for your 2e learner.
The event will not be recorded because it includes personal information from our panelists - a summary will be shared on REEL's blog.
Dr. Lisa White, licensed psychologist, offers consultation services through Summit Center to help families find the right school for their child.

Parent Footprint with Dr. Dan: New Podcasts on Astrological Insights, In-Laws, Special Needs Parenting, and Making Connections
Dr. Dan spoke with four new guests this past month, including astrologer Catherine Urban, author Sally Koslow, special needs advocate Rachel Pastiloff, and psychology professor Geoffrey Cohen.
Family Astrology with Catherine Urban
Dr. Dan interviews professional astrologer, mom, and author Catherine Urban on today’s episode about the ways astrology can help individuals and families including:
• Gaining insight into patterns and how to rework them to better serve us
• Having a clearer understanding of our purpose, strengths, challenges
• Improving relationship dynamics
• Forecasting for what the year ahead offers – and how to take advantage of the seasons and cycles unfolding in our life
Specializing in forecasting, Catherine empowers her clients to become alchemists of their own charts, while gaining confidence and clarity on their path. Additionally, she studies familial dynamics and how shared traits are reflected in the astrological charts of family members.
Mothers-in-law and Daughters-in-law with Sally Koslow
Dr. Dan interviews Sally Koslow former magazine editor, author, parent, and grandparent about the complex relationships between mothers- and daughters- in law (MIL, DIL).
On this episode, Dr. Dan and Sally Koslow (drawing on her long career as the editor-in-chief of iconic McCall's Magazine) have a great conversation about family, marriage, mothers/daughters/sons, adult children, grandparenting, and much more. Listeners will leave with a new understanding of the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law bond.
Dr. Dan speaks to Mom, Special Needs Parent, Advocate, and Coach Rachel Pastiloff. The two talk about parenting, family, and her road to becoming a Manifesting Mom. Rachel is mom to two sons (one with special needs) and her conversation with Dr. Dan is filled with wisdom, strength, and grace.
Rachel Pastiloff tells Dr. Dan how she learned to embrace her parenting journey – specifically the experience of discussing (and admitting) that special needs parenting is hard. Rachel discusses her wonderful son (he has a dual diagnosis of Prader Willi Syndrome and autism), her special needs family/community, her typical son’s experience, the unequal pressure on women/moms, and the reality that not all families live perfect lives despite what we see online.
Dr. Dan and Geoff focus their discussion on our deeply human need to belong. They offer hopeful solutions to our challenging times. Professor Cohen shares great advice about navigating modern life with greater empathy in work, school, politics, and everyday encounters.
Finding out your child is profoundly gifted (PG) or twice-exceptional (2e) can be confusing and overwhelming. It may not be clear where to go to find resources to support your child. The Davidson Institute’s Young Scholars Program can support you and your family on this journey.
If you have questions about what the Young Scholars Program is or how they can support your student, please consider attending an Application Q&A session. These sessions are open to parents, educators, and other professionals interested in supporting PG and 2e children. The next virtual Q&A session is November 14 at 10 am (Pacific).
Four years earlier, Jordan, who is gifted and autistic, had written a book of humorous short stories, called “O’Kelley Legendary Legends of Legend,” to get out of doing homework in 4th grade.
Many of the cast in the show are twice exceptional students. "I was smiling throughout the movie,” commented Dr. Dan Peters. “Smiling for Jordan and his courage, for the mentors who were nurturing and supporting the 2e youth's talent and growth, for Jim Webb's influence on all of us and our field, and for an engaging and entertaining performance which arose out of Jordan's imagination and dedication to avoiding homework! This movie is a real-life example of the multiple facets of being 2e and raising a 2e child in a strength-based and affirming way.”
Directed by Jordan’s mom, Harri James, The documentary premiered at the 2021 Awareness Film Festival in Los Angeles, where it won a Special Jury Award for Uplifting Film. Look for it at a film festival near you, or rent on demand on Vimeo.
Written for children ages 4-12, both English and Spanish versions of the book include a blurb by Dr. Dan Peters (creator of his own Worry Monster): "Shrinking the Worry Monster is for any parent who wants their child to worry less and for every child who is being bullied by the Worry Monster. Read this book to your children and help them say goodbye to worry!”
