Dr. Dan Peters: Reflecting on 2014
What Is Important to You and Your Family?
Another year is coming to a close. As I reflect on the year, images and voices of conversations with parents, allied professionals and colleagues, and educators flash before me. The primary topics include their children, their families, their students, and their clients. The themes are the same - how do I better understand this child in order to help them find meaning and success in life?
It seems that life is more complex than it used to be and that kids are more complex as well. Whether this is true or not, the reality seems to be that life is moving fast, we are often overscheduled, we are not sure how much technology to allow, and we are wondering what is the best learning environment and approach for our children. It is easy to get overwhelmed by the challenges and complexities of intense and sensitive children, as well as our own desire to do the best possible for our child/student/client.
As I reflect on these countless conversations, a few main ideas keep circling back.
- Focus on the big picture or forest - what is important to you and your family?
- Try not to get caught up in the trees - all the daily stuff you need to do and your child needs to do. It is often necessary but keep it in perspective.
- Teach your child resilience and grit - help them learn to problem-solve and cope with adversity. Winning and getting trophies is secondary.
- Manage your worry - do your best to keep your parental worries in check. Your child has time to develop. You are doing your best. There are many possible paths.
- Appreciate and hold on to the moments - life is moving by fast. Our kids are growing and developing. Notice the moments and take them in.
I am thankful for what I have learned from the children and parents whom I have had the privilege to work with. I am also grateful for the work of the talented and dedicated professionals at Summit Center, and our colleagues throughout California and the U.S. We wish you a happy holiday season and a healthy and meaningful 2015.
