The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) will begin work on a four-fold project that encompasses areas around Interstate 80 at Kimball Junction, the westbound US-40 to westbound Interstate 80 flyover, eastbound and westbound US-40 (between SR-248 and I-80), and the SR-248 interchange. Construction crews will improve drainage and ride quality, reduce congestion, and preserve the underlying infrastructure of asphalt and concrete roadways. Work starts Monday, June 24.
What to Expect by Area
Kimball Junction (June 24 start)
Crews will install temporary barriers to perform their work in a safe manner. The eastbound I-80 off-ramp (Exit 145) will be reduced to a single lane while crews perform storm drain improvements and pavement rehabilitation.
Westbound US-40 Flyover to westbound I-80 (June 24 start)
Crews will make asphalt repairs to the ramp connecting the westbound US-40 flyover to westbound I-80. Watch for shifting traffic patterns. This work will require a 21-day full closure of the ramp to perform excavation and asphalt paving in late July/early August. Please watch for additional information as that time nears.
US-40; SR-248 to I-80 Pavement Rehabilitation (July 8 start)
This element of the project entails concrete roadway repair and replacement. This activity includes removing and replacing cracked and broken concrete roadway sections. Crews are using a "rapid set" concrete mix which allows for expedited curing and reduced lane closures. Once concrete work is complete, crews will grind the roadway for smoothness.
SR-248 Interchange (Mid-July start)
SR-248 interchange (Exit 4) improvements include upgrading storm drains, reconstruction of pedestrian ramps to ensure transitions are accessible to everyone, and eastbound and westbound US-40 off-ramp widening, adding a lane to better facilitate traffic flow to westbound SR-248.
