Construction Update

July 3, 2024

Ongoing Activities by Area

In observance of Independence Day, no work will take place from 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, through 5 a.m. Monday, July 8. Please enjoy a safe holiday.

Kimball Junction

Currently, the right shoulder is closed on the eastbound offramp (Exit 145) at Kimball Junction while crews complete drain improvements. Crews have installed temporary barriers to perform their work in a safe manner.

Westbound US-40 Flyover to westbound I-80

The westbound (WB) flyover ramp to westbound I-80 is reduced to a single lane through August.

On Monday night, July 8 at 8 p.m., crews will temporarily close the WB US-40 to WB I-80 ramp to install temporary striping. Westbound US-40 to WB I-80 traffic will be diverted to Silver Creek Road (Exit 1) and proceed to the signalized intersection to gain access to WB I-80. The flyover ramp will reopen in the early morning of July 9.

US-40; SR-248 to I-80 Pavement Rehabilitation

Daily/nightly single lane closures will take place Monday night, July 8, at 6 p.m., through Friday morning, July 12, by 1 p.m., while construction crews begin removing and replacing cracked and broken concrete roadway sections on westbound US-40. Crews will use a "rapid set" concrete mix to allow for expedited curing and reduced lane closures. Watch for shifting lane configurations while this work is underway.

SR-248 Interchange

As early as Monday, July 15, construction will begin at the US-40 & SR-248 interchange (Exit 4). Work includes upgrading storm drainage, reconstruction of pedestrian ramps to ensure transitions are accessible to everyone, and roadway widening for eastbound and westbound US-40 off-ramps, adding a lane to better facilitate traffic flow to westbound SR-248. Other improvements include new traffic signals and the addition of a lane to access westbound US-40 from eastbound SR-248.

Schedule

Work will take place around the clock on the various elements of this project:

Daytime schedule: Monday - Friday 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Nighttime schedule: Sunday - Thursday nights from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Traffic Impacts

  • Eastbound Kimball Junction offramp (Exit 145) may be reduced to a single lane as needed throughout the project.
  • US-40 will experience single lane closures and shifting traffic patterns as needed in both directions during low-volume traffic periods.

Safety

Excessive speeding through the narrow work zone creates an unsafe

environment for the traveling public and our work crews. Safety is our number

one priority, please slow down.

Please remain in the open travel lane to avoid damaging wet and curing concrete.

Zipper Merge

To avoid backing, use the "zipper merge" method when approaching a closed lane on the

highway. This method can help reduce backing by up to 40%. Please watch the

video below to learn the recommended merging technique. Give it a try and see the results!

Project Background

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is constructing a four-fold project that encompasses areas around Interstate 80 at Kimball Junction, the westbound US-40 to westbound Interstate 80 flyover ramp, eastbound and westbound US-40 (between SR-248 and I-80), and the SR-248 interchange. This work will improve drainage and ride quality, reduce congestion, and preserve the underlying infrastructure of asphalt and concrete roadways.
