"How-to" Train on Fire Extinguishers

featuring

Bob Pfeiffer

HS&E Manager, Akrochem Corporation

President, Summit County Safety Council

A fire extinguisher is a simple tool that can prevent major fires in the workplace. However, not everyone knows how to use it properly. That’s why it’s important to train your employees to use this potentially life-saving equipment, ensuring that they can react confidently in case of a fire emergency.

Bob Pfeiffer is from the Akron area, having graduated from St. Vincent – St. Mary High School and The University of Akron. Bob began his career with the BFGoodrich Company /Noveon Inc. in 1983. He worked there for over 23 years at five different locations. He spent two and a half years as Corporate EH&S Manager for Teknor Color Company before spending the last 14 years working for Akrochem Corporation.

Bob has been in the health, safety and environmental field since 1988, part time, and full time since 1992. His experience ranges from office ergonomics, industrial hygiene, emergency response, hazardous waste management and incident command to auditing, security, behavioral safety and process safety management. He prides himself on being a “hands-on” HS&E person and educating those around him. He is a firm believer that education, especially in HS&E, is key to everyone’s safety and success. He is also a two-time winner of the Summit County Safety Citizen of the Year award, 2012 and 2014.

Bob’s personal life revolves around his family. He and his wife Jackie have two adult children (1 deceased). He has coached baseball, basketball and soccer youth leagues and coordinates an annual mission trip to Appalacia every summer. If anyone thinks he really looks familiar it is probably because you have seen him on the basketball court. He has been a high school basketball official for 20 years having been in gyms in Summit, Portage, Medina, Cuyahoga and Wayne counties.

Cari's Safety Corner

Question: At the end of the day, my upper neck hurts while working at my computer. I think it is from looking up and down to reference paperwork that lays on my desktop. Any suggestions to improve my comfort?

Answer: Looking down and up places a heavy demand on your neck which may cause you neck discomfort. Additionally, eye strain occurs from the eyes frequently looking back and forth from the desktop to the screen. To improve your comfort, I recommend placing a low-angle, in-line document holder between your keyboard and monitor for an optimum set-up to reference paperwork. This will place the documents approximately the same distance from the eyes as the viewing screen and reduce the need for flexing the neck when viewing documents. For more information check out this safety talk: Computer Workstation Ergonomics or contact your BWC ergonomist for an assessment.

Wellness

Are you SAD?

Being from Ohio I am sure you have heard people say that their mood changes with the season. There is some science behind this! Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) occurs when the days get shorter and there is less sunlight than what people are normally used to. This can happen in the Fall or Winter but as it is officially Fall, it is best to avoid falling into the woes of SAD. The change of the season can have a big impact on mood and how you may feel mentally. Many report not feeling like themselves and may have issues doing things they normally do. This is a type of depression that is brought on when seasons change and can even occur when Summer starts, albeit more rare. Not everyone experiences all symptoms but they may include: Feelings of depression, losing interest in activities, weight or appetite changes, trouble sleeping, etc. If you think you are suffering from SAD, talk to your doctor or mental health specialist. Treatments include: Light therapy, psychotherapy, medication, and Vitamin D. If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline by dialing 988, texting the Crisis Text Line (HELLO to 741741), or by using the Lifeline Chat on https://988lifeline.org/
