OOPS! REVISED EDITION FOR
CALENDAR DATE CORRECTION:
PA MEET & GREET
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 6:00-8:00 PM
Dear Summit Families,

We are excited to provide you with information and news about the beginning of the 2018-19 school year, which is Summit’s 50th Anniversary. School begins for students on Thursday, September 6, and we anticipate another exciting, productive, and scholarly year.

There are several changes that affect both schools, specifically the employment of Aarco Security Corporation, providing trained and supervised security guards at each school building. The guards, retired New York City police officers, will be on duty from 8:00 a.m. until the last student leaves the building. Additionally, we have increased the security camera monitoring at each building and the administration has established a safety plan with specific staff responsibilities in the event of an emergency. While we strongly believe we are all safe at Summit, this added layer of protection for our students seems to be a necessity at this time.

In addition, we have made several physical changes including a renovated bathroom at the Lower School, new filtered water fountains with bottle fillers at both schools, and a state-of-the-art Innovation and Media Center replacing our computer lab at the Upper School. There is also new furniture in several rooms as we experiment with the correct configurations to incorporate the needs of our students who are 21st century learners. We plan to continue examining furniture and the effects prior to any major renovation. Funds to support this work comes from several sources, including Summit’s Campaign for Kids, the Lower School’s 2018 Swim-A-Thon, the Upper School’s 2018 Senior Class Gift Fund, as well as several parents who reached out to their networks on behalf of Summit. We thank everyone for their generosity.

In terms of new staff, at the Lower School two social workers, a reading teacher, and several assistant teachers will be joining us. At the Upper School, a new speech therapist and several assistant teachers will be coming to Summit. More information about staff will be included in our next issue of Summit eBlast.

Please enjoy the last few days of summer vacation as we prepare to embark on an educationally and emotionally stimulating new school year.

Sincerely yours,

Richard Sitman

School Directory 2018-19

Every school year, Summit publishes its school directory at the end of September. This directory is for your convenience when contacting Summit classmates and parents. Information included: alphabetical student listing, alphabetical parent listing, key Summit contacts, staff listing, and Parents' Association contacts and committees. We ask that you respect the privacy of our Summit families and keep this information confidential. The Summit School's privacy policy prohibits the use of this directory for any purpose other than school activities and functions.

Summit's School Directory 2018-19 will be published in a pdf format and emailed to all parents in late September. We are doing this in response to the many requests made by parents who prefer to save a digital copy on their desktop for easy access. If a printed copy is needed, please send your request via email to:

Student Transportation

"Which bus route is my child on?" "Did his or her bus break down or what's the delay?" "How can I change my afternoon drop off?" These are just some of the questions you may find yourself asking on a given day. We all know the anxiety of being put on hold when you are pressed for time in the morning. To help alleviate this stress, the Office of Pupil Transportation (OPT) has a very resourceful page that we would like to share with our parents. Follow the link below to find answers to your questions as well as some helpful tips and links from OPT.

As always, please call the school office if it is an emergency or if you need
assistance -- we are here to help.

Should you experience problems with your child's school bus, you can:
  • Call the bus company to report the problem
  • Call the Office of Pupil Transportation (OPT) at 718-784-3313
  • or call their HOTLINE: 718-392-8855
  • Report bus problems to Larry Litwack

Lunch at the Lower School

During the first two weeks, all students at the Lower School will eat lunch in school in their classrooms -- please remember to send a healthy lunch every day with your child. Microwaves are available in every classroom.

For eligible students, out-for-lunch privileges begin September 26. Eligible students include those who are twelve or older, have earned the privilege, and participated in Summit's out-for-lunch program prior to June 2018. Eligibility will be confirmed with each student prior to that date. Additionally, a nonperishable back-up lunch MUST be provided by parents to be held in school before privileges can be active.
Providing the opportunity to have fun, while learning through new activities and socializing with your peers is the main goal of Summit's after-school program.

The new fall session begins September 17.

Any questions, please contact:
