Summit's Mission Statement

In spiritual community we commit ourselves to building

a compassionate, just, and sustainable world.

The theme for June is "Delight"

June 25 “Ever Willing: Becoming the People Our World Needs” GA Sunday Worship

Each year our Unitarian Universalist Association gathers for an annual conference where the business of the denomination is conducted, along with incredible spiritual offerings, including the annual worship service. This is a big service with thousands of UU’s across the world participating in person and digitally. We will be joining in virtually from the sanctuary.

The pandemic has wrought change and created uncertainty for institutions, like our Unitarian Universalist congregations, and our wider world. Who and what are we becoming, individually and collectively?

Our GA Sunday service explores these themes as we gather in community to celebrate the best of who we UUs are

Masking in the sanctuary is OPTIONAL, wear a mask if you feel the need and for your own protection.

We still encourage everyone to be vaccinated and boosted.

We ask that if you are feeling sick with anything contagious, please stay home, thanks to having the Zoom option, you won’t have to miss the service.

If the County Health Department advises us to all mask up again, our policy will match those recommendations.

Thank you,

Elinor Weed

Board President

Margo Mariana would like to start a poetry group again. The group would meet once a month (in the past we met on Saturday morning 10:00 a.m.--- Noon --- other options are possible.) We would meet in person at Summit.

To allow for both individual sharing and feed back of members work as well as time for experiential exercises to stimulate new ideas for poems and nourish individual writing styles we will keep the group number at around 10 people. Margo would also be available to conduct shorter workshop formats to meet the needs of both beginners and more experienced writers.

Please call Margo Mariana at (619) 312-0903 if interested or with any questions.

We offer in person Children's Religious Exploration at Summit during the Sunday morning service starting at 10:00 a.m. During this time children and youth play, discover and explore aspects of Unitarian Universalist principles and sources through stories, games, activities, crafts, conversations and more. All ages are currently meeting together with our director of Religious Exploration, Mary Carter-Vail, and volunteers from the community to explore the day's theme before engaging in a variety of activities inspired by the story or discovery of the morning. Parents/Caregivers can join us after the service or visit the salon to connect with other folks in the Fellowship until pick up at 11:30 a.m.

We have nursery care available on Sunday mornings for infants to age four during the service. Children four and up join us for our Children’s Religious Exploration activities during the service on Sunday. Our professional childcare providers, Miss Cathy & Miss Abby, are ready to welcome your family and provide care ensuring the service for our little ones. The Nursery is located in the Children’s Religious Exploration wing on our campus. Contact our DRE for more information.

UU Ministry for Earth Reflections on the Business Resolution for the 2023 UUA General Assembly: “Complete Divestment from the Fossil Fuel Industry and Subsequent Reparations”

After reading the 2023 Business Resolution “Complete Divestment from the Fossil Fuel Industry and Subsequent Reparations” and the UUA Board of Trustees Response, Unitarian Universalist Ministry for Earth offers the following reflection:

We are humbled and inspired by the moral witness and labor of UU young adults and the coalition they’ve built working for transformation and calling our faith to practice our values of justice, equity, and compassion. We honor the countless hours of lay leaders, volunteers, paid staff and partners who work to create a robust and dynamic Association. In addition, we are encouraged by the numerous local congregations that pursue fossil fuel divestment, clean energy investment, work to bank with institutions independent of fossil fuels, and foster reparations for complicity in oppressive practices.

We are in agreement with the principles expressed at the end of the 2023 Business Resolution, ‘Complete Divestment From the Fossil Fuel Industry and Subsequent Reparations,” which calls “Unitarian Universalist congregations and Unitarian Universalists to review their congregational and personal investments in order to take action in response to climate change, build community connection and resilience, and pay reparations to historically exploited communities by divesting their holdings in fossil fuel companies.”

We recognize the UUA Board, after its discernment regarding the detailed actions specified in the Resolution, has expressed they “are convinced that this resolution as written would lead to UUA staff layoffs, legal challenges, and major losses in the assets we protect.”

Acknowledging that the UUA Board does not deem it advisable or possible to implement the detailed actions specified in the Resolution, we call upon the UUA to implement the spirit of this resolution and immediately author a framework for complete fossil fuel divestment and reparations for harms done through our past investing.

It is incumbent upon us all as Unitarian Universalists in community to respond to the moral call of Earth and our young adult leaders with workable legal solutions. We have a chance to begin anew and create patterns to sustain our faith movement and work for intersectional climate justice in response to this moment. How will those in 2053 look upon our deliberations and discernments? May we act with those future generations in mind.

In gratitude,

Unitarian Universalist Ministry for Earth

P.S. If you'd like to keep up with the process of this Business Resolution, watch the recording of the mini-assembly that happened on June 10th. The mini-assembly involved a conversation between the UU YA Divestment Caucus, the UUA Board of Trustees, and delegates about proposed amendments to the resolution.

FARU AN AFRICAN FABLE by Jenny Saar

Three months into Faru’s idyllic life inside Africa’s Ngorongoro Crater, the black rhinoceros calf is orphaned, and compelled to flee, embarks on an adventurous journey to find what remains of his family, along the way discovering the interconnected-ness of all living things.

The 260 page middle-grade novel emerged from the author’s twelve years of living in Tanzania, working with a rhino anti-poaching team’s educational project, as well as a heart-felt interest in wildlife conservation.

Many wondrous creatures are nearing extinction. Some have already disappeared, including the last northern white rhino population that figures into Faru’s story. The time is right for young and old to experience the tale of this endearing rhino’s coming of age while struggling to survive.

NEW BEGINNING: Why Religion Never Appealed to Me Until. . .

When Christianity descends on her mud and thatch colonial village in Kenya, will Wanjirũ and her tribe’s creation story withstand the onslaught?

She is eight years old and hasn’t gone to school yet. But she feels deference to her Kikuyu tribe’s creation story and their worship of Ngai, the Supreme. But with the Christianity, will her village life change?
