April Recap ~ Spring Cleaning!
Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help us pull off a wonderful Spring Dumpster Day on April 18th! We had an incredible turnout, serving 102 cars and completely filling four dumpsters. Together, we recycled tons of metal and electronics, donated usable goods to the Habitat for Humanity Portland Region, and sent loads of mattresses to Bye Bye Mattress.
Continuing our weekend of community care, we enjoyed beautiful weather for our SAN Lot litter patrol. Thank you to the 30 wonderful neighbors and volunteers who came out to share coffee and snacks while picking up nine bags of litter to keep our neighborhood green space beautiful. We also want to extend a special thank you to Jamie Dunphy for Portland City Council, District 1, for coming out with Luci to roll up their sleeves and help us clean! Finally, a massive shout-out goes to the generous sponsors who made this entire weekend of neighborhood cleanup possible: Metro, D1EC, and the Office of Civic Life.

Port of Portland - PDX 2045
Curious about how Portland International Airport will evolve over the next two decades and what those changes might mean for our neighborhood? The Port of Portland recently wrapped up their spring open houses for the PDX 2045 Master Plan Update, sharing their Recommended Development Strategy for future terminal, airfield, parking, and cargo investments. If you missed the live events in April, you can still easily catch up by watching their recorded webinar. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the 20-year vision for the airport right in our backyard and see the facility blueprints for yourself. You can view the webinar recording and browse all the detailed information boards at: https://pdx2045.org/open-house-3/

San Lot Survey
Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) owns the SAN Lot, an eight-acre strip of land between 92nd Ave and I-205 in the Sumner neighborhood. The Sumner Association of Neighbors has learned that ODOT plans to sell a 2.5 acre parcel within the SAN Lot (see the map below). We are in communication with local and state representatives to express the desires and wishes of the community for this space. Please help us by sharing your feedback!

Honoring Yvonne Rice
Yvonne served on the SAN board for many years, and was very passionate about Sumner. Here are some words from her closest friend Karen & Councilor Smith honoring her legacy:
“Yvonne passed away on April 15, 2026 at the age of 73. She was born in Portland and attended Sumner Grade School and graduating from Parkrose High School. She lived several places in the Portland area, finally returning to the Sumner area and purchasing the home where she grew up. She would tell stories of sitting on the neighbor's porch across the street and watch the movies from the Sandy Blvd Drive In theater ("It was free entertainment"). Her interests included quilting and crocheting blankets for others. She was an avid soccer fan and had tickets for both the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns since the existence of both. She enjoyed helping others and will be missed by friends and family.”
~Karen McAninch
"We honor the life and legacy of Yvonne Rice, a dedicated community member, a strong advocate, and a true champion for East Portland. Yvonne was a constant presence in our community. She showed up, spoke up, and stood firm in her commitment to making District 1 stronger, more connected, and more visible. Her support for East Portland was unwavering, and her impact will continue to be felt in the spaces she helped shape. She believed in this community, its people, its potential, and its future. We are grateful for her voice, her presence, and her leadership. She will be deeply missed."
~Councilor Loretta Smith
