Sun Coast Pipeline - April
2015
From Our Winning Team to Yours:

Spring has officially sprung and April showers will most certainly bring out beautiful blue bonnets and an array of color.  Lady Bird Johnson was right on the mark as she promoted the idea of protecting wildflowers and planting them along our highways.  Sometimes very simple ideas can have a very positive impact on all of us.

This month Sun Coast will be celebrating our 30th anniversary. Over the course of the past three decades, oil prices have ranged from $11 to $134 per barrel.  Our country has experienced a number of significant economic cycles, and we have been embroiled in conflicts precipitated for the most part by terrorist attacks on that fateful day of September 11, 2011. Our nation has also experienced its share of natural disasters during this period.  Through the good times and the bad, America's stars and stripes have remained as a beckon of hope and help to those who live under tyrannical rule.

Sun Coast has enjoyed the opportunities associated with our free enterprise system.  Kathy Lehne, our founder, started Sun Coast with a paltry two thousand dollars and a very big dream.  She was determined to create a company that offered high quality petroleum products and related services that American enterprises needed to keep them up and running; a company with unparalleled customer focus and commitment.  Thanks to the thousands of customers we now serve, Sun Coast has grown year after year and is the largest woman owned business in Texas, with a national footprint.  Sun Coast provides fuel, lubricants, chemicals, fluid filtration, generator service, emergency fueling, used oil pick up, crude and fuel transportation services and a monitored tank loan program to nearly every commercial sector in the United States.  We also have a leading price management program.

Over the past three decades Sun Coast has built its excellent reputation by providing our customers with exceptional service and prompt resolution to their concerns and inquiries. We are grateful for the thousands of companies, operations, agencies and others who return time and again to Sun Coast for the petroleum products and related services they need to keep them on track.  I, like many of you, have also been focused on March Madness.  The teamwork and enthusiasm displayed by those amazing collegiate athletes is something we can all take back to our own teams.  Let's make the second quarter of 2015 the best ever.

It was a cold, rainy night in west Texas on March 3, 2015.  Richard and Eddie had finished their duties for Sun Coast on a Frac location; they started back to the terminal in Midland at approximately 10 PM.  At 10:26 PM an incident occurred that would change everything.

A Nissan pick-up rear-ended our Sun Coast Bobtail and spun off into the center median on US 385 north of Andrews.  The vehicle immediately caught on fire and was engulfed in flames; the events that transpired next is what makes our staff here at Sun Coast some of the best.

Richard immediately pulled over and hopped out running toward the vehicle.  Eddie grabbed a fire extinguisher and ran towards the vehicle.  Richard worked trying to free the driver that appeared to be in a daze and in shock.  Richard could not get the door on the driver's side open because of the flames.  Eddie started trying to extinguish the fire; another citizen arrived and said they had called 911.

Richard and Eddie worked fast, fearful that this driver would not last for emergency responders to arrive.  Eddie was able to put enough of the flame out on the vehicle and both of them worked diligently as the fire burned around them to free the driver.  The driver was freed from the wreckage and will live to tell the story or drive another day.

Our employees here at Sun Coast are some of the best. The heroic efforts of two men saved the life of another and our hats should go off to them.

In the next few months Sun Coast Resources, Inc. in conjunction with Chevron will be rolling out its new ISOClean lubricant program.  This program will allow our customers to receive "Certified Clean" Chevron Lubricants.

So, how does a certified clean Chevron lubricant benefit your company or lubricant program?  How does it work?

Well I will let one of our newest members of the Sun Coast family, Steve Reed explain.

Did you know that over half of component failures are the direct result of fluid contamination?

Cleaner oil means more reliable equipment, reduced oxidation, better hydrolytic stability and better water separability.

Chevron ISOCLEAN® Services provide contamination control for your circulating lubrication systems. ISOCLEAN Services help reduce wear, decreases unscheduled downtime and goes a long way toward extending the life of your equipment.

Potential benefits of using ISOCLEAN Services:

  • Increased component life
  • Increased uptime
  • Improved machinery reliability
  • Lower component inventory
  • Reduced disposal costs
  • Improved product quality
  • Reduced maintenance & service time
  • Improved safety

Friends and customers,

Put me in Coach!  Yes, it's that time of year! Baseball begins its 8 month journey to crown a new World Series Champion.  Did you know, arguably the most famous ballpark of all time, Yankee Stadium - "The House that Ruth Built", opened for the first time in 1923.

Springtime also brings about The Masters, anyone for a pimento cheese or egg salad sandwich? Golf's first major takes place this month and as one of the most famous golfers of all time once said, "If the Masters offered no money at all, I would be here trying just as hard."- Ben Hogan

Here are some famous events that also took place in April:

1976 - Apple Computer Company was formed by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak.

1975- Microsoft was formed as a partnership between Bill Gates and Paul Allen in Albuquerque NM.

1912- the RMS Titanic collides with an iceberg killing 1514 people onboard that night and into the next day.

1956- Elvis sings  "Heartbreak Hotel" on the Milton Berle Show with an estimated 25% of the U.S. population tuned in.

1973- The first portable cell phone call is placed in NYC!

And remember the famous quote from Mark Twain, "The first of April is the day we remember who we are for the other 364 days of the year"

Thanks again to all you who read our articles and we hope that each and every one of you can take something away from it.  Whether it's a little bit of humor, trivia or knowledge, we do truly value your business, partnerships and friendship.

Time Out For Safety

Blazing the Trails

Warmer months are coming; spring is here. As most of you know we have just finished one of the coldest and wettest winters from years past. We are looking forward to outside activities such as bike riding, trail exploration, and beach excursions. Some of us just have to bide our time till the summer gets here to take that vacation but let's talk about some safety tips nonetheless.

Snake bites and hydration are two big topics that are hot right now in west Texas but they pertain to state wide.  Rattlesnakes are big in west Texas and now that the weather is warmer they are coming out of their dens and slithering onto the roads.  We need to be careful when walking trails, riding bikes, going for a stroll in your own backyard. Per the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, approximately 8,000 people are bitten every year by venomous snakes in the United States with 10-15 deaths each year from these same bites.

Here are some tips that can help you avoid this hazard:

1. Do not put your hands or feet anywhere you cannot see

2. Use a flashlight at night

3. Use well known paths when walking or exploring

4. Check out logs, stumps, rocks when looking for a place to sit or relax.

5. Step up and on and not over; a snake may be on the other side

6. Wear loose fitting long pants, thick socks, and remember to over-the-ankle hiking boots.

7. Avoid tall grass or brush areas

8. Avoid pulling on sticks, branches, etc. in the water when wading or swimming because rattlesnakes or cottonmouths may be present.

9. Be careful around water lines; snakes tend to migrate to the water

 Now let's talk about hydration

With the warmer weather coming you will perspire more.  We need to drink more water to stay hydrated.  There is a helpful chart that might help:

Drink regularly, even if you do not feel like you are thirsty.  The darker your urine is the more dehydrated you are.  Some symptoms of dehydration are eyes being sunken in and unable to produce tears, mouth dry, thirsty, pinching your skin and the skin does not return to normal right away.

Some symptoms of severe dehydration are:

1. Lethargic or unconscious

2. Very sunken in eyes, no tears present

3. Mouth and Tongue very dry

4. Drinking poorly or unable to drink

5. Skin pinch goes back very slowly

In the state of Arizona alone over 1500 deaths have occurred from 2000 to 2012.  Do not become a statistic; hydrate and as always remember to stay safe!

Safety First,

Sun Coast Employee Recipe  of the Month

Chicken Tortilla Dump Soup

Keri Folmar
Accounting Support Specialist

Ingredients:
  • 1 package of preseasoned fajita chicken thighs
  • 1 pkg of taco seasoning
  • 1 pkg of ranch seasoning
  • 1 can of petite diced tomatoes
  • 1 can of rotel
  • 2 small cans of tomato sauce
  • 1 can or corn (drained)
  • 1 can of black beans (drained)
  • 1 can of pinto beans (drained)
  • 1 pkg of cream cheese

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 and bake the chicken

While the chicken is baking, in a pot add all of the other ingredients except the cream cheese (leave it out to become room temp and soft)

Add salt, pepper, and garlic to your taste and water as needed

When it comes to a boil cut up the cream cheese and add it in (cutting it up helps it melt quicker)

After the chicken is done dice it up into small pieces and add it in

Once everything is in and the cream cheese is melted, you can enjoy.

Extras on top that make it great:

Sliced avocado

Sour cream

Shredded cheese

Tortilla strips (take a pack of tortillas and butter both sides, slice them up into small strips, bake them until golden brown, and let them cool)

Wishing you and your family a Happy Easter!
