Greetings!

In the past month, I have had the opportunity to speak with SunSpec members and partners from Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Germany, India, Mexico, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, the UK, and many U.S. states. In each conversation, it has been reinforced to me that we are all learning the importance of independence (social distancing), interdependence based on communication (daily web chats and online meetings), and resilience ("the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness"). These lessons will prove useful as we continue to build the DER industry this year and beyond.

The California Public Utility Commission recently pushed back the compliance date for CA Rule 21 Phase 2 to June 22, 2020 , citing the Coronavirus pandemic. While unfortunate for those companies that were ready to ship on the original compliance date (including 14 companies that achieved SunSpec Certified status for their products), the delay is allowing more companies to finish testing and achieve certification. Contact us to get your product into the certification queue.

The SunSpec Rapid Shutdown standard is another program that is proving its durability with more companies achieving SunSpec Certified status and with the SunSpec Rapid Shutdown work group doing its homework to solidify the standard. We will have a lot more to say about this program in the coming weeks and months as we ramp up the marketing volume. Stay tuned for details.

With the passage of the IEEE 1547-2018 standard and subsequent publication of the IEEE 1547.1 test procedure this summer, all 50 U.S. states will soon be installing smart inverters with mandated SunSpec Modbus or IEEE 2030.5 interfaces. To prepare for this eventuality, SunSpec is now developing training for SunSpec Modbus 2.0 and an upgraded toolset for software developers. If you want a sneak preview, just ask us or join the SunSpec Modbus work group to learn all the details.

One final note on resilience: when future ecological or health crises come, Distributed Energy Resources, powered by smart inverters and standard communication interfaces, will serve as an essential solution to local power needs. Standards-based microgrids are on the way. If you want to drive this revolution faster, we encourage you to join a SunSpec work group and make it happen!

Onward,

CA Rule 21 Compliance Deadline Extension
Cites COVID-19 Pandemic

On March 20, 2020 the California Public Utilities Commission issued an extension of the CA Rule 21 compliance deadline, citing conditions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The extension pushes the deadline to June 22, 2020, giving Members of the Alliance additional time to certify products. T o learn more about the CA Rule 21 deadline extension and The SunSpec IEEE 2030.5 / CSIP certification, visit our website here .
OpenEGrid Announces SunSpec 2030.5/CSIP Certification for DER Aggregator Solutions

Congratulations to OpenEGrid upon reaching yet another milestone by achieving SunSpec Certified status for their IEEE 2030.5 Aggregator solution. OpenEGrid was the first in the industry to receive SunSpec and UL certification for their IEEE 2030.5 Gateway products in July 2019.

According to Vijay Israni, CEO of OpenEGrid: "We started out in 2016 as a developer of design, estimation, and control systems for energy storage systems and microgrids. It was in October 2018 that we realized the need which the renewable energy industry had for DR and DER control software and chose to become a leader in this space."

"OpenEGrid is acutely aware that existing and emerging energy software applications need to evolve and move forward together to create a standardized, viable, sustainable, and replicable eco-system which will eventually make possible the vision of microgrids and eventually “Smart Grids,” Israni concluded.
SMA Announces SunSpec 2030.5/CSIP Certification
for Their DER Aggregator Client

Kudos are well deserved by SMA Solar Technology , a SunSpec Alliance founder and frequent contributor to SunSpec specifications. SMA previously achieved SunSpec Certified status with their SunSpec Rapid Shutdown and SunSpec Modbus compliant products, and now has added the SMA IEEE 2030.5 Aggregator cloud solution to the mix.

"SMA pioneered the development of the smart inverter concept," said Brad Dore, Director of Marketing for SMA America. "An important aspect of that concept is an open standard communication interface that enables system owners and grid operators to extract an array of energy services from each DER system, thereby maximizing the potential value of these systems," Dore added.
The SunSpec Rapid Shutdown community is building momentum as five companies are now shipping SunSpec Certified products and others such as Texas Instruments offer chipsets supporting the SunSpec Rapid Shutdown technology.
Ginlong Solis Announces SunSpec Rapid Shutdown Certification with Anticipated New Product Release

Ginlong Solis , a trusted business partner and a strong advocate for SunSpec Alliance standards, is pleased to announce that their smart inverter product line has been SunSpec Certified to the SunSpec Rapid Shutdown standard. Ginlong previously had their smart inverter products SunSpec Certified to the SunSpec Modbus standard and is an active participant in SunSpec Work Groups.

According to Susanna Huang, General Manager of Ginlong Solis USA, "Ginlong admires all the great work that SunSpec has contributed to our solar industry. We are honored to be SunSpec's technology partner and look forward to continuing to help build the SunSpec ecosystem."
