I want to personally thank SunSpec members for their contributions to, and support of, the SunSpec Alliance over the past 10 years. The SunSpec Alliance is dedicated to building the Distributed Energy industry and making solar power the first and best choice. It is not an easy undertaking, so thank goodness that we can rely on each other’s passion to sustain our efforts through all the challenges we face each day.

One of the most pressing challenges we face in the U.S. market is the implementation of California Rule 21, specifically the need to comply with the Phase 2 and 3 requirements that become mandatory on January 22, 2019. If your company manufactures smart inverters or builds Distributed Energy Resource (DER) systems, you should be completing your communication work now. And if your solution includes IEEE™ 2030.5-2018 technology, you should be starting the SunSpec Certification process and engaging with a SunSpec Authorized Testing Laboratory

Finally, we must stay focused on driving operational excellence and incorporating cybersecurity into our businesses. To that end, please consider joining us at PV Operations USA in San Diego on November 6th and 7th where I’ll be leading a panel called “The Digitalization of PV Operations - Analysing Performance and Automating O&M” or at S4X20 in Miami on January 20th through the 23rd, 2020 where I’ll be giving a talk called “Securing DER / California Rule 21.” Please contact to see if discounts are available.

Kind regards,
Tom Tansy

SunSpec at Solar Power International Recap

More than 19,000 people descended upon Salt Lake City in late September for the 2019 edition of Solar Power International (SPI). Despite global trade challenges, spirits were high. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with SunSpec members and partners and prepare for 2020.

The SunSpec brand was ubiquitous at SPI. SunSpec members Fronius , SMA , and AP Systems all announced their new SunSpec Certified rapid shutdown solutions. ABB and Open E-Grid made a combined announcement of their SunSpec Certified solution for IEEE 2030.5/CSIP . SunSpec made a joint presentation with Robby Simpson of GE on the topic of IEEE 2030.5, participated in multiple events highlighting Orange Button application-level data interchange, and had a lively discussion with several members about how to pump up the marketing volume for all SunSpec Certified solutions.
AnnuaI Meeting & 10-Year Celebration Recap

SunSpec hosted our annual meeting on October 3rd. In addition to the annual meeting, we also held a celebration of our 10-year Anniversary. New SunSpec Website Launched
If you have not visited recently, we encourage you to do so. In September, the SunSpec Alliance launched a new website. As the industry has evolved, so have we and we think this new website better reflects where we are today. And, with this new build, we have laid the foundation to allow the site to grow to better meet the needs of our members and of the industry as a whole. Rapid Shutdown Functional Specification

SunSpec has released an update to the SunSpec Communication Signal for Rapid Shutdown Functional Specification. This specification defines a multi-vendor, multi-device communication interoperability specification to support NEC 2014, NEC 2017 and UL 1741 module-level rapid shutdown requirements. The update addresses applications of the receiver in devices that are not PV modules and references the UL 3741 standard.
