The Gratitude Corner

In gratitude for these summer days:

Not only the days, but life itself lengthens in summer.

I would spread abroad my arms and gather more of it to me, could I do so.

From our Pastor

A small word from a normally very wordy Pastor…

Just this: a little something to carry with you in your pocket in these times, inspired by the mission statement of the United Church of Christ…

Never put a period where Love has put a comma,

because Love is still speaking,

singing,

rising,

resisting,

moving

in the dark.

Giving our Priorities Shape (GPS) Action Item

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) set a historic high in July 2026, making roughly 51,000 administrative arrests. Temporary Protected Status (TPS) has officially ended following a U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing the termination to proceed. The Department of Homeland Security's cancellation has gone into effect, stripping roughly 300,000 to 350,000 Haitians of their legal deportation protections and work permits.

We ask you to continue to keep in mind and to support, however you can, the legal and human rights of immigrants, some of whom have lived in this country for decades under protection but who are now endangered by orders of the current administration.

Some organizations are accompanying immigrants through this life-threatening time. Click below to learn more.

"Voices of God"

After coffee hour on Sunday, August 16, there will be a presentation of John Kreitler’s Second Symphony, “Voices of God,” a symphony in five movements inspired by the poetry of Elaine Hewes.

This symphony was premiered in August 2024 by the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. We will be playing a recording of the premiere performance with Elaine reading the poem that accompanies each movement.

John Kreilter’s daughter, Chelsea Marie Davis, will be with us for this event and will say a few words about her father’s work. John died just months before the performance of his symphony, but his music and his legacy live on.

The symphony is about 35 minutes long.

Fundraiser for the Broadway-bound musical Marian

undefined

You are invited to an evening of music and conversation with composers Chelsea Marie Davis and Victoria Theodore as they share the remarkable ten-year journey of creating MARIAN—a new American musical inspired by the life and legacy of Marian Anderson.

The evening offers a behind-the-scenes look at the making of an original musical on the threshold of its world premiere. It will include performances of songs from MARIAN, personal stories from a decade-long creative journey, and conversation about what it takes to bring a new work to the American stage.

MARIAN celebrates the extraordinary artistry and courage of Marian Anderson, whose historic 1939 Lincoln Memorial concert transformed America's cultural landscape and became a defining moment in our nation's story.

Scripture Notes

Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost

In today’s liturgy, water is a major symbol. The Gospel reading from Matthew is the account of Peter’s attempt to join Christ in walking on the Sea of Galilee. As Peter’s faith fails and he begins to sink below the waters, he cries to the Lord for help and

Jesus rescues him.

The Old Testament reading is the story of Elijah’s meeting with God in the eloquent silence that drowns out all other sounds. This famous story underlines the unexpectedness of our encounters with God. Like Peter, and Elijah, we need to be on our guard – God is about where we least expect it!

We also continue to read the Epistle to the Romans. In this part of Romans, Paul is dealing with his sorrow that many of his fellow Jews have not accepted Jesus as Christ but he does not believe that God has rejected them. All who turn to God in faith belong to God and there is no distinction, for all are one in Christ who have called on the name of the Lord.

Water in the scriptures is not only a symbol of life, but also a symbol of death. As Israel passed from death into new life at the Red Sea, so we gather as a community that has passed with Jesus from death into resurrection in the waters of baptism.
