From Silence to Song:
Tracing America’s Spiritual Growth through Christmas Music
With Rev. Su Choy
December 14, 2025
This interactive presentation explores the spiritual history of America as expressed through our nation’s most beloved Christmas music. Beginning with the rigid silence of the Puritans, who forbade holiday celebrations, the journey moves through the centuries, revealing how social, political, and cultural upheavals shaped the nation’s faith, hope, and collective consciousness.
Participants will experience live examples of carols across eras, from the solemnity of early hymns, through the tender, restorative songs of the 19th century, to the prophetic and emotionally resonant music of the modern era. Each selection will illustrate how Americans transformed personal and national challenges into songs of hope, peace, and spiritual insight.
Most significantly, attendees will clearly see how our unique history has shaped the carols we sing today, gaining a deeper appreciation for the hidden meanings and enduring truths they carry across generations. Come join us – we promise that you will never hear the familiar Christmas Carols the same way again!
