Second Sunday of Advent

The Annunciation

If Mary had not heard, had heard

but had not listened,

had understood but not stood

still, had not consented,

had been scared

and scurried from the garden

where he glistened

into the dark house or the dark wood,

worried because the Word he hinted

stirred

uneasily within the ear; if she had erred

and permitted heart to harden

when, like frostenameled ground, air glinted,

the Word would have been only sound.

Advent Beauty

One of the most important things we do in the community of faith is to bear witness to the presence of God (the presence of beauty, hope, light) we see or experience. The reflection included here is a way I can bear witness to the gift of Advent vespers on Wednesday evening, December 10.

Advent Vespers at St. Brendan, Deer Isle, Maine

It’s dark now, well before 5:00 in the afternoon,

And so when people come to Vespers at that time

The candles in the church windows are already lit,

As are the candles arranged on the wooden bench

In front of the altar. (They sit on a white runner interspersed

with small branches of evergreen boughs because beauty matters.)

It snowed the night before, and now, as is often true

On the coast of Maine, the snow has turned to rain,

So people help one another cross the parking lot

Which has become a bit of a mini-glacier.

Once Vespers has begun, those gathered

Sing about the light shining in the darkness,

And pray for the light of Christ to shine in their hearts.

Barbara, who offers the reflection, speaks about the years

She lived in Norway, and about her friend who

Carries a tea light whenever she travels.

(She has tea lights for each of us to take home with us.)

Connie plays a beautiful piece on the piano,

And we keep a long silence as the notes hang in the air

Like stars.

Two of our most beloved members are present

For the first time in many months, as one of them

Is undergoing chemotherapy and hesitates to go out in public

With her compromised immune system.

Everyone is so glad to see them,

Finding it almost impossible not to gather them into

Huge hugs of welcome and love.

When it’s time for people to share their thanksgivings

And concerns, we pray for those who are sick,

As well as for those in Gaza, Ukraine, and in other parts of the world

Devastated by war and unspeakable horror.

We hold silence.

The candles hold the light.

And we dare to believe God is holding us.

We bundle up after Vespers is over,

And then hold onto one another

As we inch across the icy parking lot

With our tea lights in our pockets.

Perhaps there has never been so much holding.

Perhaps there has never been so much beauty

On a dark December night on an island off the coast of Maine.

Beauty matters.

And I hold onto that.

Giving our Priorities Shape (GPS) Action Item

Slow Down. Quiet. It's Advent

Thinking about Elaine’s sermon and Tony Stoneburner’s Annunciation poem this past Sunday, let us consider what keeps us from hearing, listening, seeing, acting to share God’s love with our neighbors near and far. Are we too busy, distracted by our phones, fearful of risk, resigned, overwhelmed? Try to wake up each day to a decision to bring joy to someone somewhere in some small way.

And don’t forget: one more Vespers to attend, December 17, 5 PM

Alfred's Box

Scripture Notes

Third Sunday In Advent

The Third Sunday of Advent again has as its central theme the ministry of John the Baptist. Jesus said of him, “Among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist....” In today’s Gospel, John, who has been imprisoned by Herod Antipas, is facing death and wishes to know before he dies that he was correct in identifying Jesus as the Messiah. Jesus’ reply is to quote from the Messianic prophecy of Isaiah, demonstrating that he is indeed fulfilling the Messiah’s ministry as Isaiah had foretold.

The Old Testament reading is the passage Jesus quotes in the Gospel reading. The sign of the Messiah is a new order of existence -- God’s Kingdom -- in which health and salvation spring forth. The second reading is a call to patient waiting for the Lord to appear to inaugurate the Kingdom of God.

The distinction between John and even the least in the Kingdom -- ourselves -- who are even greater, is that our birth is more than natural -- it is the new birth by water and the spirit in Holy Baptism, which has made us members of the Body of Christ. We are commissioned for ministry in Baptism; a ministry like that of Jesus. In Holy Eucharist, we affirm our commitment to that ministry to all people, which is the ongoing sign of Christ in the world.
