WHITE ROCKS

2,000 years ago at the turn of time into the Common Era, slaves who had been set free would carry a small white rock as proof of their freedom. This ‘calling card’ was necessary to prove to others that they were no longer in bondage, and anyone born into slavery could carry this little rock to remind themselves they were now free; they had a new identity. 

The open and evolving White Stone Ceremony is a ritual founded in a tradition of freedom and ‘new life.’ This Sunday we’ll engage in this New Thought sacrament, rooted in a scriptural passage from Revelation 2:17: “To everyone who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give a white stone, and on the white stone is written a new name that no one knows except the one who receives it.” Journey into newfound freedom from bondage through the White Stone Ceremony on Sunday, January 14, 2024!

MASTERING MINDFULNESS: INHABITING THE INNER STREAM with Su Choy

6-week class on Fridays, January 19 - February 23, 11:30–1:00

Though mindfulness and meditation have surely entered mainstream consciousness, many seekers still remain confused about both principles and practices. During this 6-week mindfulness intensive, we will read and discuss foundational passages in mindfulness by renown masters Thich Nhat Hanh, Jon Kabat Zinn, Joseph Goldstein and others in order to deeply understand its vast healing power. 

During Part I, we will examine the Sutra on the Four Establishments of Mindfulness as outlined by the Buddha some 2500 years ago, applying them to our lives in practical and helpful ways. During Part II, we will explore traditional lying down, sitting, walking and standing practices while continuing to investigate core mindfulness principles. We will also have fun trying out more contemporary practices such as breath-counting, finger-breathing and bedtime body scans for nourishing sleep.

Throughout all our activities we will observe that true mindfulness involves much more than merely abiding in the present moment. With steady practice, we eventually come to see that inhabiting the inner stream of mindfulness clarifies both the underlying purpose and appropriateness of all of our thoughts, words and actions.

MINDFULNESS MONDAYS MEDITATION

Is meditation a mysterious practice for you? Is meditation a precious practice which you consider priceless? Someone once said that there may be as many types and forms of meditation as there are people. “Maybe there are as many definitions of spiritual awakening as there are people who have had them.” On Mondays we’ll begin a series of meditation practices introduced, led, or facilitated by numerous people from a variety of fields. Come to consider what type, form, or method of meditation best suits you. 

Join us at Unity Windward on Monday evenings at 6:30 in the Sanctuary, where we’ll gather to consider practices to benefit your life through the practice of meditation. Meditation has been shown to reduce stress, reduce anxiety, reduce memory loss, increase mood, increase centering in love, and increase self-awareness. Available for a love offering… 

Our first Monday, January 15 will be facilitated by Ashin Vimala. He is the grateful beneficiary of generous teachers from a variety of traditions, cultures, races, religions and walks of life. Ashin was ordained as a Burmese Forest Monk in 2013. Interests include: right view, knowing what’s happening in the present moment, continuity of awareness, and friendly sharing of experience with others.

MEANDER TO EMMAUS

The Gospel of Luke gives an account that after the resurrection of Jesus, where he met and walked with a couple of his followers on a road which goes from Jerusalem to a tiny village named Emmaus. As they walked these disciples did not recognize Jesus. Upon their arrival at Emmaus, they asked that Jesus come inside to sit and eat together, at which point they understood with

whom they had been walking.

You’re invited to join together with other followers of the Christ-spirit on a hike in Ho’omaluhia Gardens to recognize the divinity in others, and the divinity in you. As we meander, we’ll recognize that there’s no need to reach a specific destination, yet remember that The-All-That-Is is encountered on the way. 

We’ll meet at the gateway to Ho’omaluhia Gardens at 8:00am on Saturday, January 13, and then meander to Emmaus (metaphysically, of course). We’ll walk together and encourage one another to see the divine in all of life.

The dominant, literal, modern approach to scripture minimizes the experience of a vastly rich text. An impoverished literality of much of modern Christianity detracts from the bountiful beauty, and magnificent mystery of the depth of metaphysical exploration. Metaphysical bible study emboldens and empowers you, all the while igniting your desire to renew, rededicate, and resurrect your life through the Way exemplified by Jesus.

Much of what is popularly known as Christianity receives a good bit of negative press. Contemporary Christianity has been denounced as lacking integrity, as well as there being a mean-spirited, exclusivist nature to much of the Christianity of today. There are those who describe this phenomenon as ‘Churchianity.’ These attributes often result in people no longer identifying themselves as Christian. Large swaths of people no longer attend church, yet they seek ways to practice their spirituality, rather than merely profess their religion. Discovering Fire examines and explores some of the practices of the first centuries communities of Christ, and may very well be a handbook of those who desire a more authentic, practical faith. Discovering Fire might be the bridge between primitive Christianity, and a newly fresh-born Christianity of today.
