In Gratitude for Stewart’s Celebration of Life
My family and I are feeling overwhelming gratitude for the exceptionally beautiful Celebration of Life service and luncheon created for my beloved husband Stewart on June 28th.
I know that a huge amount of work and love went into the celebration and the superb luncheon which followed the service.
Thanks be to God, Elaine, my wonderful family, friends who were readers during the service, caterer Louis Pickens, friends and family from around the country, and all of St. Brendan’s for a splendid sendoff for my dear man.
May he rest in peace!

Thank you all who helped with the production of the concert on June 19 by my son, Matthew, my daughter-in-law, Christina, our 40+ friend, Marisa, our decade old friend, Annie and new friend, Yuri. I cannot thank you all who attended and were so generous in your support of WindowDressers. To be able to hear my Memorial Service music played by my son and his spouse and colleagues while I was still living was the Highest Honor.

During the month of July, our focus will be on the Deer Isle Community, and in general, the ways we can reach out to our neighbors in love and support, both those we know well and those we need to get to know better.
A couple of local organizations could use our support:
The Garden Project (thegardenprojectme.org) hosts a Saturday Café/Market from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on July 12, 19, 26, and August 2, on the road to the Stonington Transfer Station.
“Please join us and be part of our learning and growing experience. Peer to Peer, youth-run Garden to Table Café, plus a Maker’s Market featuring our makers along with gifts from local artisans. Our gifts are given freely; there are no set prices, and we invite you to decide the value you receive. All proceeds go directly to paying their internship stipend, our ending camping trip, and the supplies we need to make the Internship and the Saturday Café a reality.”
Healthy Island Project needs help at their booth at the Friday Farmer’s Market, delivering meals to Seniors, in their Community Garden, and more. Call: 207-367-6332 or visit their website for more information.
| | The Passing of Michael Hewes | |
Michael Hewes, beloved husband of Pastor Elaine, died unexpectedly on Tuesday during a routine workout at their home. This is a profound loss for our community.
On Wednesday, a brief gathering of mourning and prayer for Michael and Elaine was held at the church and via Zoom. A recording of that gathering is available here. Joan Maxwell led the service.
There will be a Service of Celebration for Michael at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 20, at the Blue Hill Congregational Church.

Founded in 1975 by Michael Hewes, Hewes & Company has been employing the local community for fifty years. The tribute below is posted on their website.
A Life Well Built
It is with heavy hearts and tremendous sadness that we share the sudden passing of our beloved founder, Michael Hewes, whose vision and hard work shaped not only our company but the very landscape of this region of coastal Maine for half a century.
Fifty years ago, he began with nothing but his hands, his tools, and an unwavering belief in the beauty of honest craftsmanship. What started as a young carpenter's dream in a small shop has grown into a legacy that graces the Maine coast—each home a testament to his commitment to quality, beauty, and the enduring value of work done right.
Mike never stopped working. The day before he died, he was working on his boat in the back of our shop. Always a man of working hands, he wasn't happy unless he was building or renovating something. Even as our company grew and our homes became bigger, he remained the same man who could be found on job sites, running his hands along a piece of trim, ensuring it met the standards he set himself decades ago. His soul remained that of a craftsman until the very end.
Those who knew him understood that he didn't just build houses—he built homes where families would gather, where children would grow up, where memories would be made against the backdrop of Maine's singular beauty. Every beam placed and every detail perfected carried with it his deep respect for the families who would call these places home.
Mike was a self-taught man, and he never stopped learning. He was a teacher, too, and he taught us that true finery isn't about excess- it's about excellence. It's about using the finest materials, honoring tradition and innovation, and never cutting corners. Most importantly, he showed us that success isn't measured only in profits, but in the pride of honest work and the relationships built along the way.
Mike's passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his legacy lives on in every home we build, in every skilled craftsperson we employ, and in the unwavering standards we maintain. The company he built with his own hands, together with the structures he built or saved, will continue to honor his memory by upholding the values he instilled in us: integrity, craftsmanship, and a deep respect for the Maine coast he loved so dearly.
To his family, friends, and all who knew him, we share in your grief and celebrate the remarkable life of a man who truly built something that will last.
The work continues. The legacy endures.

Please join us at the 16th annual St. Brendan’s Women's Wilderness Retreat Monday, September 8 - Thursday, September 11. In recent years, we have held this event at the Diocese of Maine’s Camp Bishopswood near Camden.
All interested women are invited to come. It is a wonderful opportunity to relax in the beauty of a quiet lake, swim or paddle kayaks, engage in creative art activities, make new friendships, and join in prayer if you wish - but with no organized programming. Generally, we have the use of the entire facility, which includes cabins, bathrooms with hot showers, a lovely big dining room where good food is prepared and served by the camp chef, hiking trails, and chairs by the lake for relaxation and conversation.
Please consider joining us this year. It is fun! The inclusive cost is $300.00. Scholarship assistance is available. Please speak to Patricia or Martha.

Fifth Sunday after Pentecost
Our reading from the gospel of Luke today is the parable of the Good Samaritan. Thus, we are confronted in the liturgy with the radical call of God to love our neighbor as ourselves. Our participation in the Eucharist as the baptized people of God is far more than an action by which we receive God’s grace for ourselves; it is our act of commitment
to the ministry of self-giving love to others. The Prayers of the People, in particular, are expressive of this. By joining in prayer, we commit ourselves to active ministry to those for whom we pray.
The Old Testament reading is from Moses’ final address to the people of Israel. He reminds them that God’s favor toward them calls for obedience to His commandments. That obedience, Moses says, is not external but is implanted in our hearts and lives by God.
The parable teaches us that every human being is our neighbor toward whom we have the ministry of love. We are given this ministry of active love toward others as the means of extending the saving and reconciling work of Christ to all humankind. Our celebration today, and at every gathering of the church, is meant to send us out into the world to make Christ known.
