Sunday, March 15
Sunday of the Cross
| | |
With the help of God, we have almost reached the middle of the course of the Fast, where our strength has been worn down through abstinence, and the full difficulty of the labour set before us becomes apparent. Therefore our holy Mother, the Church of Christ, now brings to our help the all-holy Cross, the joy of the world, the strength of the faithful, the staff of the just, and the hope of sinners, so that by venerating it reverently, we might receive strength and grace to complete the divine struggle of the Fast.

Vol. 003 - Then and now
As we continue to reflect on the 110 year history of All Saints, it's a wonderful exercise to see the Church, as it was almost completed in the mid 1940's next to a photo of our sanctuary as it stands today. Instantly, you probably notice that the Iconostasis is missing, it was not installed until 1947. If you look carefully, you can faintly make out the famous blue starry night ceiling that generations of All Saints parishioners fondly remember gazing up as they prayed.
In putting these two images side by side, one might think that it is to invite comparison. That is not the intent here, rather to show how over generations our church has grown, changed, and evolved - but the core of faith remains. Since that original photo was taken somewhere in the mid 1940's, over 1,500 have been baptized in this sanctuary. On the one hand, they receive the same trust of faith handed down to each of us through the apostles. On the other, they leave their own unique impression on the Church and community. It is beautiful to be able to look back and see the beauty that was then, and the beauty that is now as genuine expressions of the same faith, and same community, over the span of all these years.

110 Stories History Series: all are invited to submit photos with a short (or not so short) story from the life and history of this parish, or its parishioners. We want this to be an open expression to celebrate everyone from the first Greek immigrants who settled in Joliet to to those who are just now joining this community. We will be sharing at least one story a week here in the bulletin and on social media.

Click the link to the right in order to submit you special occasions to share with the community via our online form.
