MOTHER’S DAY
Mother’s Day is a time-honored tradition of recognizing the women in our lives who raised us, dried our tears, and well, mothered us. Everyone has one or has someone who is like a mother to them. On the second Sunday of May, we honor those women who are our mothers. Whether we shower her with gifts, take her to a fancy dinner or make her a homemade card, what moms want most is to be surrounded by the love of her family. Knowing the people they love are safe, sound, and healthy is a mom’s number one priority.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:
Micro Pharms
Business owner and entrepreneurial mastermind, Christopher Pham founded Micro Pharms back in 2020 when he started growing microgreens in his apartment. Why microgreens? Chris just wanted to develop a healthier lifestyle for himself. When the pandemic hit and many of his restaurant clients stopped taking orders, Chris had to think of a new way to repurpose his microgreens, so he started developing value-added products like micro-kimchi, chili oils, and dried spice and seasoning blends like his Asian Chicken Cajun Fry Mix (also great with fried vegetables!). Chris’s main goal with his value-added products is to uplift his Asian culture and heritage while bringing a fun and playful energy to his brand. You might have even noticed Gazpacho, the red microgreen mascot on all of Chris’ packaging and labels. In the coming months, Chris is looking forward to expanding his offerings to frozen prepared foods like dumplings. Check out Micro Pharms at the Thursday Mid-City Market or the Sunday City Park Market!

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”
The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.
Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.
See it every Saturday at 10am and on Sundays at 11:30am. Watch on WYES-TV and stream on wyes.org/live and on the WYES and PBS Apps. Out of WYES’ viewing area?

A big honor for a man who always thinks big, Krewe of Endymion founder and captain Ed Muniz. The Endymion Garden was dedicated today, featuring a likeness of Muniz and the “Endymion Man” by Kern Studios. The statue sits on the Delgado Community College campus near the start of the Endymion parade route. Today Delgado also announced that the Muniz family (including Ed’s wife Peggy and three daughters) and the krewe have pledged donations totaling $500,000 to benefit Delgado students, programs and scholarships. A great way to honor the legacy of a local Carnival icon.

Audubon’s Cool Zoo with the Gator Run lazy river opens May 13, and it will operate weekends-only through the end of May.
"The Cool Zoo with the Gator Run offers great ways to have fun and stay cool while visiting the Zoo," said Audubon’s Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Uptown Facilities Daine Appleberry. "We are excited to reopen this popular attraction for the summer season."
Starting on May 29, the water park will be open daily until Aug. 5, when returns to weekends-only operation. The park closes for the season in September.
The details
Audubon Zoo guests will be able to cool off twice a day at the water park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. each day. The Cool Zoo closes every day from 1 to 2 p.m. for cleaning and maintenance.
All the fan-favorite features will be there: the alligator water slide, the spider monkey soaker, water-spitting snakes and shady spots for adults.
The Gator Run lazy river offers visitors the option to cool down by floating atop a tube along a 750-foot long course that is 3-feet deep and 10-feet wide. It also features two sand beaches and water cannons that can be used to spray other visitors as they float on down the river. It also includes showers, restrooms, lockers, outdoor seating, a private area for nursing mothers and the "Gator Bites'' concession stand.
Rafts are included in the admission price for Gator Run, and anyone shorter than 48 inches will need a life jacket supplied by Audubon Zoo.
Outside food and drinks are welcomed in both Cool Zoo and Gator Run, but the size of coolers and ice chests cannot exceed 28 quarts. Glass containers and disposable straws and lids are not permitted for the safety of the zoo's animals. Audubon may search coolers.
Get tickets
Cool Zoo tickets can be purchased online and at the zoo's front gate. Regular admission to Cool Zoo, including Gator Run, is $9 for Audubon Nature Institute Members and $12 for non-members, plus Audubon Zoo admission.
For more details about tickets, cabana rentals and the 2023 season schedule, visit https://audubonnatureinstitute.org/tickets.

NATIONAL BUTTERMILK BISCUIT DAY | May 14
May 14th ushers in National Buttermilk Biscuit Day to celebrate this high-rising breakfast staple.
Biscuits are made using baking powder or baking soda as a leavening agent rather than yeast. A typical buttermilk biscuit recipe contains flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, butter, and buttermilk. They are often referred to as a “quick bread,” indicating they do not need time to rise before baking. While being made, the dough is beaten and folded to incorporate air, which expands while baking, causing the biscuit to rise.
Before the American Civil War, biscuits emerged as an inexpensive addition to meals. This sturdier bread product soon became popular as people realized it absorbed the gravy on their plate better than plain bread. Soon a new family favorite, biscuits, and gravy, was created.
Alexander P. Ashbourne patented the first biscuit cutter in 1875.
Supermarkets offer canned biscuits that are refrigerated until ready to be baked. In 1931, Ballard and Ballard patented these refrigerator biscuits.
Biscuits have been a staple of the Southern United States cuisine for many years and are often made with buttermilk. Traditionally served as a side dish with butter, they are also served at breakfast with molasses, light sugarcane syrup, maple syrup, sorghum syrup, honey, jam, or jelly, or as a breakfast sandwich.

We have the second iteration of the sidewheeler Potomac, launched in 1870 out of Cincinnati. She was originally engaged on the Cincinnati to Wheeling route but was sold to a syndicate headed by Captain John N. Shunk and sent to New Orleans where she is pictured in late 1870.
On December 20, 1870, the Potomac encountered the Robert E. Lee (noted for beating the Natchez in June 1870 in a race from New Orleans to St. Louis) near Natchez, Mississippi, and the encounter left the Lee so badly damaged that her captain ran her onto a sandbar where she sank in nine feet of water. The Potomac was considerably damaged, but returned to service between New Orleans and St. Louis. She was sold twice and dismantled in 1882.

Dining in a private dining room in the basement of La Stella Restaurant on September 22, 1966, while taking a break from Grand Jury testimony in Queens, New York, are (left-to-right facing the camera) attorney Jack Wasserman, Carlos Marcello, Santo Trafficante, Jr., and attorney Frank Ragano. The three men with their backs to the camera are (left-to-right) Joseph Marcello, Frank Cagliano, and Anthony Carollo (owner of Venezia Restaurant in New Orleans).
Police, led by Chief Inspector Sanford Garelik, would later raid the lunch meeting, often referred to as “Little Apalachin,” and arrested everyone present as well as Carlo Gambino, Thomas (Tommy Ryan) Eboli, Michael Miranda, Joseph Gallo, Don Alongi, and Aniello Della Croce (not pictured).
In all, thirteen people were arrested for “consorting with known criminals.” Bail was set at $100,000 per man (about $925,000 today) by New York State Supreme Court Justice Joseph M. Conroy. Although Queens District Attorney Nat Hentel announced that he intended to convene a special grand jury to investigate the meeting, the charges against all men were later dropped
