The First Sunday after Pentecost: Trinity Sunday

Dear Friends,

If you have been paying attention to the Prayers of the People over the past few weeks, then you may have noticed the addition of the name "Mary" when we pray for our bishops. Andrew Dietsche is the Bishop of New York, Allen Shin is the Bishop Suffragan, and now Mary Glasspool is the Assistant Bishop of the Diocese. What's the difference between a Suffragan and an Assistant Bishop? This is one of those mysteries that will get you no closer to the kingdom of God, even if you understand it. It seems to me that a suffragan bishop must be elected by the diocesan convention, while an assistant bishop is appointed by the diocesan bishop. At least that's how it played out here in the Diocese of New York.

In any case, it will be our joy to welcome the Rt. Rev. Mary Glasspool to Grace Church this Sunday for the 11 am service. Bishop Glasspool will preach the sermon, preside at the Eucharist, and also confirm and receive this year's class of youth and adults who are committing themselves to Christ. Bishop Glasspool is a "preacher's kid" (as am I) and a native of the Diocese of New York. Since 2010 she has been the Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles.

Please make a point of being here this Sunday in support of our candidates for confirmation and reception, and to welcome Bishop Glasspool.

See you in church.

Coming Soon

MAY 29 - FAREWELL TO THE REV. GRETCHEN RATTEREE , our Pastoral Resident for the past year. Join us at coffee hour after the 11 am service to wish her well.

JUNE 5 - FAREWELL TO THE REV. STEPHEN HOLTON   Join us for a festive coffee hour after the 11 am service to say farewell to the Rev. Stephen Holton, Associate Rector since 2012.

JUNE 5 - WALKING THE WAY: CHARLES GORE, LIBERAL ANGLO-CATHOLICISM, AND SOCIAL JUSTICE - THE SUNDAY FORUM @10AM. Led by the Rev. John Wirenius, lawyer, constitutional scholar, Deacon, novelist.  One of the founders of the Second Oxford Movement, Bishop Charles Gore was a passionate defender of free scientific inquiry, individual conscience, and social justice.  These views often brought him into conflict with the ecclesiastical authorities of his age but stemmed from his belief that doctrine was secondary to a commitment to a Christian life--what he called walking "the Way," as the Early Church called the Jesus Movement.  We explore how Gore's belief in a very traditional Christian life and liturgy led to a lifetime of commitment to social justice.

JUNE 12 - THE ANNUAL PARISH PICNIC AND CHOIR RECOGNITION SUNDAY - Grace Church parishioners and friends are welcome and encouraged to come to Huntington Close following the 11am service! Join us in celebration of the choir ministries of Grace Church and to help bring our program year to a joyous and festive close. Suggested donation at the door is $10 per person. There are many ways to support this event, from food and drink donations to volunteering, so please contact the Rev. Chase Danford. The day's festive spirit will continue with the 6 pm service, after which we'll enjoy fellowship and refreshments outside the Chantry on Huntington Close.

JUNE 21 (NEW DATE) - COME JOIN THE OPEN DOOR VOLUNTEERS for their summer reception! Open Door volunteers are friendly folks who give 2 hours per month on a weekend afternoon to provide a welcome and answer basic questions for visitors to Grace Church. Interested? Dinner will be served. Please contact Singleton Cox for more info or to RSVP for the reception.
