A Message from our Pastor and Teacher
|
May 29 ~ Seventh Sunday of Easter - “Reconnecting with an Unhurried God”
Martha was busy. Mary chose to be still, to tune into Jesus. The lesson here is not that it is bad to work, but we also need times of connection to the Divine. Tuning into the holy may mean just taking time to notice things that are beckoning to dwell with us awhile. As I share my sabbatical plans, I hope to inspire your time of sabbath, too.

Reflection of the Week from the Racial Justice Team
|
Three-quarters of Black Americans are worried that they or someone they love will be attacked because of their race, according to a nationwide Washington Post-Ipsos poll conducted after a gunman killed 10 people at a Buffalo supermarket, allegedly targeting members of the mostly Black neighborhood.
The Post-Ipsos poll of Black Americans finds most are saddened and angered by the attacks, but just 8 percent say they are “surprised.” Even before the shooting, in earlier poll questioning, Black people saw racism as one of their greatest threats. After the attack, only 10 percent think the problem of racism will improve in their lifetimes, while a 53 percent majority think it will get worse.

From the Environmental Justice Team
|
Trees are important! They’re worth some water.
The lowly sidewalk tree often stands invisible. We rest in its shade, bask in the scent of springtime flowers, and we don’t notice it until it’s gone.
But the tree works hard. It captures and filters stormwater runoff and helps replenish groundwater. It cleans our air and cools our neighborhoods. It improves our mental health. It saves lives.
With Southern California officials clamping down on outdoor water use amid worsening drought, the message is clear: It’s fine for lawns to go brown, but we need to keep trees alive and healthy.
“Trees are long-term investments in the health and well-being of our neighborhoods and require some water to withstand periods of reduced rainfall, but they pay us back in tremendous benefits,” said city forest officer Rachel Malarich.

Pentecost Sunday on June 5
|
On Pentecost Sunday, it is traditional to wear red to symbolize the "tongues of fire" that descended on the apostles. Please plan to wear red, orange or other fiery colors that day to join in the celebration.
Because the "tongues of fire" also symbolize the apostles' ability to communicate and understand different languages, we're looking for folks who speak a language other than English to participate in a portion of the service. If you can volunteer, please contact Pastor Jill or Worship Co-Chairs Patty Little or Carol Robb. Thank you in advance!

Strengthen the Church Special Offering Will be Received June 5
|
The Strengthen the Church offering supports the expansion of ministry and growth of UCC local congregations. Your support of this offering will help the UCC fulfill its commitment to creating a just world for all by investing in new ministries and practices that meet the emerging needs of local communities.
As God calls our congregations to be the church in new ways, your generosity will plant new churches, awaken new ideas in existing churches and develop the spiritual life in our youth and young adults. We will receive the STC offering on Pentecost Sunday, June 5, 2022.

Seekers Study Group Plans for the Summer
|
Seekers will not meet this Sunday Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Their next book will be "God Has Many Names" by John Hick, and they will begin discussion of this new book on June 5th.
The group plans to cover the book in the four Sundays in June, but if it takes longer, that is okay also. After concluding “God Has Many Names,” the group will take a summer break, with the duration to be determined later
