Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

And all of a sudden, with Natalie’s little stones of love metaphorically coming our way, I realized that the cornerstone that is Jesus is not a solid block of granite or a block of cement reinforced by rebar… But rather it’s a cornerstone that’s intended to be broken open again and again and again… broken into little pieces of love that can be taken out into the world and shared… just like the bread we share every Sunday…

Sermon given by Pastor Elaine on October 4th.

The Gratitude Corner

Miriam: I am grateful for the seaweed that often lies in beautiful patterns along our rocky shores. It feeds our soil, provides a habitat for various marine species, cleans coastal waters, sequesters carbon dioxide and those are just a few of its contributions to our ecosytem.

Mickey: I am grateful for Sylvia Earle, a marine biologist. Her work is the protection of oceans and all life therein. In 1979, she held the record for "deepest walk on the sea" at 1,250 feet. At age 91, she still dives! Google her life and accomplishments.

My son Christopher's first profession was saturation diving, thus the interest.

Indigenous Peoples' Day 2026

At the start of each Sunday service, we say together, "We pray for the courage to find ways to support our indigenous neighbors who still face injustice and prejudice. "

Looking forward to the Midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3, please do some research about Maine legislative and gubernatorial candidates and their support or lack thereof for the issues highlighted by the Wabanaki Alliance of Maine. Look up the candidates and their positions, and review the Wabanaki Alliance website (https://wabanakialliance.com/) for their endorsements and their legislative scorecard for the recent 2026 legislative session.

Did you know that St. Brendan is one of more than 300 organizations that are members of the Wabanaki Alliance Tribal Coalition?

Window Dressers Community Build

Two weeks from today, we begin building inserts to keep our neighbors warm this winter. It is hard to describe how much enjoyment we all have working together at this build. We are so grateful for the help our community provides, which makes this outreach possible. Please click below to see the days and times when you could come and join the fun. We need full shifts, especially Nov 2 - Nov 4.

News from Near and Far

Lynne Witham shares this Facebook post from Families First Community Center in Ellsworth. This organization provides supported transitional housing for homeless families. They are "graduating" two families that are ready to move into non-supported apartments on their own and could use some help with furnishing them.

They also welcome plants, home decor, and other cozy touches to help make these new spaces feel like home. To donate, text Arielle Morong, Property & Office Manager, at (207) 460-3711. Thank you!

Support a good cause!

Scripture Notes

The Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost

During these last weeks of the Church Year, we come to the section of Matthew’s Gospel marked by intense confrontations between Jesus and the religious

establishment; these confrontations were to lead to his crucifixion. In today’s Gospel, Jesus is again teaching about the Kingdom. Here it is described in a way that antagonized the establishment. If those who are religious do not respond to God’s call, they will be replaced by others who do respond.

In the first reading, Isaiah foresees the Kingdom of God as a great feast (the same image Jesus uses in today’s Gospel reading) and as a feast for all people, not just a few. This is one of the places in the Hebrew Scriptures where we see Israel’s understanding of God as a national or tribal God expanding into seeing God as God of all.

We continue to read Paul’s letter to the Philippians. Paul brings his letter to its conclusion, calling on the people to live in peace and unity and to help one another.

Our gathering in Eucharist is a foreshadowing of the Kingdom of God. We are called to bring all people into this fellowship and meal. In this way, the Kingdom of God is revealed and humanity’s hope is made more certain.
