Throughout global history, floods have wreaked havoc on humankind, unleashing powerful destruction not only on our ecosystems and infrastructures, but also on our collective psyches. And due to climate change, storms are stronger, making us feel even more vulnerable, uncertain as to their direction, magnitude and impacts. Though many current faiths take the bible literally and teach that floods are somehow acts of divine retribution for our so-called “sins,” other more progressive spiritual teachers including Unity co-founder Charles Fillmore, take a different perspective on flooding, a metaphysical one that both empowers and heals. In fact, his teachings reveal the pivotal role that our own consciousness plays in demonstrating the events that show up in the material realm.

New Class at Unity Church of Hawaii Saturdays on the Unity Campus 2 PM to 4 PM

Taught by Jo-Anne West Lewis, MSCP, MST

Dancing with our Shadow: Recognizing and engaging Hidden Pieces of our Personality so as to experience more fully our spiritual heritage and integral beauty.

We will utilize “Shadow Dance” by David Richo as a text, to serve as the basis to support our class activities, including gentle processes of mindfulness. These processes, a variety of simple and engaging exercises, will allow us to address and befriend the shadow. They will open our subconscious to reveal the collection of unacknowledged aspects of self, which, remaining hidden, has prevented us from realizing our greatest gifts. And so, our focus will be to bring them to Light. 

In transforming negative or undesirable traits, or those which we admire in others, but disavow in ourselves, we are able to live more authentically and happily. By releasing mis-held energy, we allow ourselves to move out of dis-ease, into greater health and flexibility. In the transmutation of darkness into light we enhance the quality of our lives, improving relationships with others, as well as the one with self.

Affirmation and prayer will be interwoven with the activities in the search for our authentic selves.

David Richo, PhD, is a therapist and author who leads popular workshops on personal and spiritual growth. Known for drawing on Buddhism, poetry, and Jungian perspectives in his work, Richo is the author of How to Be an Adult in Relationships: The Five Keys to Mindful Loving and The Five Things We Cannot Change: And the Happiness We Find in Embracing Them. Aloha, drummers!

I'm excited to announce that on Sunday, October 20, from 1:00 to 2:15 pm, we will gather again at Studio 50 in Kailua for a high-powered hour and fifteen minutes of drumming, chanting and lots of impromptu hullabaloo. Bring your djembe if you have one, but if not, let us know and we will find one for you. We always have a smaller drum or two available for newbies who want to try the class. As always, class is offered for a recommended $10 love donation.

We will review some traditional techniques as well as explore some new rhythms and chants, blending the best of West Africa with even some Native American chants. You will energize your chakras while having some great fun - you don't want to miss it!
