NATIONAL BANANA SPLIT DAY
National Banana Split Day recognizes the sweet ice cream treat served with a banana, whipped cream, and various toppings. Get yours on August 25!
Originally served in drug stores, soda fountains, and ice cream parlors, the banana split is traditionally served in a long dish called a boat. To make a banana split, cut the banana lengthwise and place it in the dish. Then add scoops of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream between the slices of banana. Each scoop gets a topping; add crushed pineapple to the strawberry, drizzle chocolate syrup over the vanilla, and add strawberry topping to the chocolate. Next, sprinkle with crushed nuts. Finally, garnish with whipped cream and maraschino cherries.
A 23-year-old apprentice pharmacist at Tassel's Pharmacy in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, created the first banana split in 1904. David Evans Strickler enjoyed inventing sundaes at the store's soda fountain. For only 10 cents, Strickler sold his first "banana-based triple ice cream sundae," double the cost of all the other sundaes.

Superdome renovations done; NFL pleased with upgrades
By Ian Auzenne
It's "dome sweet dome" for the New Orleans Saints and their fans.
This weekend, the Black-and-Gold and their faithful followers will return to a newly- and fully-renovated Superdome during Friday's training camp practice and Sunday's preseason finale against the Tennessee Titans. Superdome officials expect fans to like what they see.
"It'll be the first time fans could be in the building to see the finished renovation," Superdome general manager Evan Holmes told the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District Board on Wednesday.
According to Holmes the contractor who oversaw the renovation project left the building on Wednesday, the same day NFL officials inspected the changes. Holmes says Superdome workers are making some final touch-ups before the Superdome opens for Friday's practice and Sunday's game against Tennessee.
"Walking the concourse, you probably saw that a lot of the space is already set and ready to go," Holmes said to LSED members, who joined the NFL officials on Wednesday's tour. "We are in full clean and put-back-together mode."
Holmes says the calendar proved to be the contractors' friend in getting the work done ahead of the pro football season.
"We had a much longer timeline to get ready for the season this year than maybe in previous years, so we're taking full advantage of that," Holmes said.
According to Holmes, the NFL tour group was pleased with the improvements and are satisfied with the changes made to Super Bowl LIX's host stadium.
"All indications suggest that we're in a pretty good place right now," Holmes said. "The NFL is happy with the building, both in its current condition after the renovation--they're very excited to see how it operates given what it was back in 2013 in terms of the flow of folks getting in and out--but also just being able to accommodate the scale of the event as it's evolved since 2013 and since we've last seen it."

Many of us grew up thinking a bell pepper is a vegetable, so you're probably surprised to know it's actually a fruit! Fruits come from the flowering part of a plant and contain seeds whereas vegetables come from elsewhere (usually roots, leaves or stems) and do not contain seeds.

Superdome opens 40-yard bars for Saints opener
CityBusiness staff
Now, this is a 40-yard dash that Saints fans can get behind.
The Caesars Superdome now boasts two 40-yard bars – Crown Royal Tchoupitoulas Bar and Bud Light Pontchartrain Bar – spanning from the 30-yard line to the 30-yard line on both the East and West sides of the stadium.
The bars offer panoramic views of the field and feature a variety of offerings, including specialty cocktails, craft beer, and domestic beer. The addition of these two spaces, located on the 100 Level, will be open to all fans in attendance as the Saints play on Sunday, Aug. 25, in their preseason opener at 1 p.m. against the Tennessee Titans. The Saints also open the regular season at home on Sept. 8 at noon against the NFC South division rival Carolina Panthers.
“We wanted to create spaces that enhance the overall enjoyment of attending games at the Caesars Superdome,” said Saints President Dennis Lauscha. “These 40-yard bars provide a unique opportunity for our fans to gather, socialize, and enjoy the action on the field in a comfortable and vibrant setting.”
The 40-yard bars are among the final updates of the Caesar Superdome’s $560 million “Envision the Future” transformation and renovation of the 50-year-old facility. Renovations have all been completed in time for the Superdome to host Super Bowl LIX, on Feb. 9, 2025. The Superdome will get a test before the Super Bowl, hosting Taylor Swift concerts in October.
The $560 million project, which began five years ago, is funded by the New Orleans Saints,
Louisiana Stadium & Exposition District (LSED), and the State of Louisiana. The purpose of the renovations is to preserve the character of the building’s iconic exterior, while elevating its overall functionality and the gameday experience.
The renovations have included wireless and cellular upgrades, field level end zone suites, wider concourses, redefined entrances, escalators to upper levels and removal of ramps, vertical transportation upgrades, three new atriums, new premium spaces, two 40-yard bars, new and expanded bathrooms, enhanced accessibility for disabled and guests with sensory issues, and transformed food and beverage service with back-of-house upgrades, among additional upgrades.
From alligator sausage to crawfish bread to steak and shrimp tacos to gyros, burnt end nachos, and frozen daiquiris and frozen Irish coffee, a diversity of food and beverage options have been added. Improvements have been made to shorten wait times. Formerly, there was one checkout for every 150 visitors; now there is one for every 90, including many AI-assisted self-checkouts.
Additional eateries for this season include Beau Coup Barbeque, Big Freezy, Crescent City Sausage, Bienville Burger Bar, Delta Roost, 504 Eats, Dressed or Not New Orleans PoBoys, Magnolia Mezze, Mercado Tortillas, Parish Pizza and Provisions, and Bayou Kitchen & Market, among others.
“The event and game day experience has improved tremendously,” said Evan Holmes, General Manager at Caesars Superdome, Smoothie King, and LSED Properties, in a prior article published this year in CityBusiness. “We have a Superdome that our fans and our city deserve – more efficient, more space, more options, and the time to get in your seat, even when you’re on the 500 or 600 levels, has been dramatically reduced with our escalators leading up to all the levels.”

An eclectic group of adults… playing six mid-pubescents, vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box. [Rated: PG-13]

Sunday's & Ancora Pizza! PIZZA PIZZA PIZZA!! Here’s the deal - lucky for us, Bryn, owner of Ancora, is a swirl fan and is delivering 10 pizzas with various toppings at 12:30 on Sunday, first come first served. So if you want a hot pizza for the whopping price of $10, come at 12:30, buy a glass of wine and settle down in the AC. Just want a slice? $3 each. The only rule (we hate rules) is that you eat your pizza in-house while drinking our wine. Pretty simple…please respect the rule :)

NATIONAL WHISKEY SOUR DAY
On August 25, people across the United States observe National Whiskey Sour Day. Join us as we shake things up a bit with this adult mixed beverage.
Traditionally garnished with half an orange and a maraschino cherry, a whiskey sour is a mixed drink containing whiskey (often bourbon), lemon juice, and sugar. Whiskey sours are shaken then either served straight or over ice.
“Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough.” – Mark Twain
Alternatives to the traditional whiskey sour are the Boston sour and the Ward 8. The Boston sour adds a dash of egg white to the recipe. The Ward 8 uses either a Bourbon or rye whiskey base with both lemon and orange juices and grenadine syrup added for sweetness.
6 Whiskey Facts
- The first mention of a whiskey sour was in an 1870 Wisconsin newspaper.
- After opening, a bottle of whiskey will remain good for five years.
- An unopened bottle of whiskey can be kept for over 100 years and will still be fit to drink.
- Both “Whisky” and “Whiskey” spellings are correct. Whisky is specific to Scotch Whisky, and Whiskey is Irish.
- In 2004, Alabama named Conecuh Ridge Whiskey as its official state spirit.
- According to legend, Jack Daniels ran away at the age of 6 and learned to make whiskey from a Lutheran minister.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, August 19
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

University of Holy Cross to hold Constitutional Carry & Self Defense Class August 29
Public confusion still swirls around Louisiana’s new firearm carry laws
New Orleans – The University of Holy Cross, in conjunction with Pierre Basic Guns, is hosting two gun safety and self-defense workshops on its Algiers campus on Thursday, August 29, 2024, to help Louisiana residents and the greater UHC community better understand the nuances of the new constitutional carry laws in the State of Louisiana and how the new laws impact their rights and responsibilities. Sponsored by the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA), these workshops are designed to educate the public on the legal aspects of self-defense and carrying firearms.
The workshops will be held on August 29, 2024, with two available sessions: 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. or 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Both sessions will be conducted at the University of Holy Cross Moreau Center, located at 4123 Woodland Drive in New Orleans.
Each session will last approximately two hours and is open to anyone 18 years and older who wishes to deepen their understanding of this significant legal change regarding the legalities of carrying a firearm in public.
“The need for clear and accurate information is greater than ever,” says University of Holy Cross Police Chief and Director of Public Safety Marshall E. Pierre, Sr. “We are excited to host these informational workshops so our community can feel more educated and empowered about self-defense, especially around the subject of carrying firearms.”
Participants will gain valuable insights into their rights and the best practices for responsible gun ownership and self-defense. These sessions aim to empower attendees with the knowledge needed to navigate the legal landscape confidently and responsibly.
The workshops will cover critical topics such as:
- The implications of being armed in public
- Staying safe by avoiding danger
- Pre-threat indicators
- De-escalation
- Using force
- Seeking further training
- Differences between carrying with a permit vs. without a permit in Louisiana
"I have conducted several of these events, and I've found that many participants are often unaware of the specifics of the law, including what constitutes a justified act of self-defense," says Pierre Basic, founder of Pierre Basic Guns. "One of the most surprising aspects for attendees is learning about the restriction on carrying within 1,000 feet of a school zone without a permit."
To register for a session or to learn more about the workshop series, please contact Pierre Basic Guns at (555) 123-4567 or visit their website at www.pierrebasicguns.com.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp
- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

Jon Cleary Kicks Off Star-Studded Line-Up for Friday Concerts
The Historic BK House & Gardens is offering music afficionados a special treat this fall with a new Rhythm & Roses Concert Series, extending the popular spring concerts into September, October and November. British-born, American funk and R&B musician Jon Cleary will kick off the series with a solo performance on Friday, September 27, at 6 pm. Cleary, an accomplished pianist, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter, will perform from 6-9 pm in the beautifully manicured BK House Parterre Garden, 1113 Chartres Street.
Rhythm & Roses, presented by BK house neighbor and benefactor James Douglas Hislop, will run through Friday, November 1, except for October 11, and will feature a wide array of popular New Orleans talents. The opening concert will be presented in part by NOLAxNOLA.

The inspiring day will explore the rich history, design and cultural significance of the city’s gardens and will feature distinguished experts covering a broad spectrum of landscapes from formal parterre gardens to indigenous wild spaces. The program will run from 10 am to 3 pm, with coffee, a boxed lunch and closing reception. Visit www.bkhouse.org for details.
