Israel’s Democracy Is Up For Grabs Right Now

JOEL RUBIN

Democratic foreign policy strategist at Democracy Partners, former Obama Administration Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs, and Jewish Political Leader

“We are seeing Israel’s current government led by Bibi Netanyahu pushing forward on judicial reforms, judicial sector reforms, that even Donald Trump’s most recent ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, said went too far or go too far. And essentially, it boils down to these reforms would enable the Israeli parliament to override any supreme court decision that it wants through simple majority vote – 61 out of 120. That basically means that a political party has veto power over the rule of law in Israel.”

“The Fed is intending to get this inflation under control by crashing the economy by pulling so much money out of it through loss of jobs, higher interest rates, that ultimately it will get inflation under control. And it will. It absolutely will. But that will mean there is no soft landing.”

Chicago Boots Lightfoot But Who Will Replace Her?

SCOTT STANTIS

Internationally Syndicated Editorial Cartoonist, Senior Fellow at the Alabama Policy Institute and Co-Host of DMZ America Podcast

“The magnificent mile or the mag mile otherwise known as Michigan avenue is, I believe, only 30 or 40% occupied at the moment – lot of empty storefronts. Most of that is due to the economy but some of it is also due to a rise in crime, particularly property crime. In the state of Chicago, merchants were told to ignore smash and grab criminals. And so you are just sitting there and watch your goods literally walk out the door while you are supposedly supposed to do absolutely nothing.”

Stop Stripping Words of their Meaning

TED RALL

Left/progressive political cartoonist, columnist and analyst. Pulitzer finalist, 2 RFK awards, Columbia ’91, Co-Host of the DMZ America Podcast

“There is an editor who I will not name but of a major American newspaper who was quoted all over the country this past week who said this is not cancel culture, this is holding someone accountable. So cancel culture is by definition holding someone accountable for their expression by depriving them of their work. In this case, that is exactly what happened; Scott [Adams] said stuff on his YouTube live video that people said was racist, and as a result, he was cancelled by several newspapers and Dilbert is no longer published in the United States.”

Words Do Matter

JENNIFER HORN

Co-Founder, The Lincoln Project, University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy Fellow and Former New Hampshire Republican State Committee Chair

“People don’t have a right to not be offended. People do have a right to speak their mind as long as it does not lead to violence and personal harm to other people. However, as you said, stepping outside of that specific issue, words matter. We live in this weird, post-truth arena where folks want to just make up their own facts, make up their truth, and, we are seeing more and more often, make up their definitions to the various parts of the English language.”

BRUNCH RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Each week, CenterClip will be featuring a favorite brunch recipe from one of our Creators or Team Members. Josh Lewis' favorite recipe is:

Josh's Favorite Salad

by Josh Lewis

I'm a firm believer that salads handled with great care make great meals. I make mine by first layering the plates with spinach and mixed greens, tearing the leafs by hand to make them easily combine with the rest of the ingredients. Add thinly sliced cucumber and cooked chicken breast (again, torn by hand to make it extra bite-sized). That's the base. Now we add salt, pepper, hand squeezed lemon, olive oil, and whichever flavor of vinaigrette seems most appealing. Next, dice tomatoes and sliced red onion (extra thin) and green onion. I usually add thinly sliced strawberries and include quarter cuts of avocado and a hard-boiled egg to four corners of the plate to add some symmetry. Toss some more salt on top as the egg and avocado will pop better when they're savory. Finally, top it all off with sliced and toasted almonds.
