A Message from the Resilience Project at MMC

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, resilience can be defined as "the capability of a strained body to recover its size and shape after deformation caused especially by compressive stress." And further explains that "In physics, resilience is the ability of an elastic material (such as rubber or animal tissue) to absorb energy (such as from a blow) and release that energy as it springs back to its original shape."

While this isn't the typical definition of resilience when thinking about human wellness, it does invite us to ask ourselves, how do we release the energy we absorb? How do we respond to the "compressive stress" of life, which deforms our heart, mind, body and soul? Is our release of energy one that is healthy, allowing us to recover and maintain our essence?

At times it is likely that what life asks you to "absorb" arrives at a rate and magnitude that you can hardly bear. It's true. Our reality is one in which we can not control all that happens to or around us, but we can control how we respond. We can choose to be resilient in big and small ways (that are actually big!). Pour love into a cause you believe in. Call that friend you think about often but haven't talked to in forever. Ask for a hug. Unapologetically embrace self-care. Whatever allows your essence to recover, do it.

Until next time, know and trust that you are worthy of love, you are loved, and you are enough.

About the Resilience Project

The aim of the Resilience Project is to share actionable ideas to help nurture resilience in bite-sized ways. The ideas will come from our community and beyond. You are invited to consider each idea and embrace what makes sense for you. We also encourage you to share the ideas that you find worthwhile with others in your life. The intent is to put empowering, do-able ideas in the hands and hearts of many.

SNOW ANGELS

It's that time of year again when we ask for volunteers to help clear the sidewalks and steps of snow and ice on Sunday mornings. We have a power shovel that is relatively easy to use and several regular shovels. Rock salt is available inside the back door and near the elevator in the front of the church. You would need to arrive to church early, between 9:15-9:30. Many hands make light work! If you can help please contact Sue. Thank you!

~Deacon-in-Formation Corner~

A Note from Betty Jerabeck

As many of you know, I am currently in Diaconal formation. You might be wondering: What does that even mean? What is a deacon? How does a deacon serve within the church community? How could having a deacon benefit our parish? And I’m sure there are plenty of other questions on your mind as well!

Over the past months, I’ve had many casual conversations with some of you about my journey on this path. I thought it might be helpful to open up the discussion more broadly and create a space where we can explore these topics together. Starting in the New Year, I’ll be sharing a space in our bulletin once or twice a month to talk about the diaconate, my studies, and what this ministry entails.

I’d also love to hear from you! If you have questions or topics you’d like me to address, feel free to share them with me. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to learn together, and I’m excited to take this journey with all of you. Please use my church email below.

With love,

Betty

CALM Ministry

CALM Ministry is a ministry of listening. We believe the gift of listening helps to alleviate suffering and that the gift of presence is one of the greatest gifts we can offer another. If you are hurting or lonely, we have trained soul-listeners who offer time and space to truly listen in a confidential and non-judgmental manner. CALM Ministers are not counselors and do not offer advice. They do, however, offer a warm heart and a soft landing place. For more information, please see our brochure, or email Lori Cunliff at calm.ministry.mm@gmail.com
