Dear Foothills Servants and Friends,

Our faith does not feel like enough. Just this past Sunday we lamented the state of Christianity in our country and world. Our own personal faith does not feel like enough to help turn the tide. Yet, Jesus reminds us of the power of a tiny mustard seed. Faith is enough, because YOU are more than enough. Give us courage and trust in you, O God. Gather us in worship this weekend to be reminded that YOU are enough.

Faithfully yours,

Pastor Naomi

Out of Office

Pastor Naomi will be out of the office October 3-9. During her absence, fellow servant Rev. John D. Kautz will provide support for emergency pastoral care needs. To contact Reverend Kautz, please call the office or call Rev. Kautz directly at 623-680-4673. Pastor Naomi will be back in the office October 11.

Stacy Bade will be out of the office October 4-19. "Weekly Footnotes" will be pre-scheduled for delivery to your email each Friday (October 7 and 14) and Sunday Celebration bulletins will be preprinted. Because of this, please note that individual names on the prayer list will temporarily "disappear" in the bulletin and remain the same in the "Weekly Footnotes." The office will be staffed most days (except 10/5-10/6) with volunteers ready to receive your call. Thank you Barbara Burtnett, Madeline Hill, and Carol Lundberg for stepping in--some of you last minute! You are a blessing.

—COMMUNITY SERVICE—

Community Service Emphasis for October

Today is the first day of Mental Illness Awareness Week, and at Lutheran Church of the Foothills we are turning it into Mental Illness Awareness Month. Please stop by the Community Service display table in the lobby to learn about the Tucson office of the National Alliance on Mental Illness Southern Arizona, nicknamed NAMI-sa. There you can pick up brochures about mental illness and read about the educational programs that are offered by NAMI-sa at no cost to all affected by mental illness. Your designated monetary donations given this month through Lutheran Church of the Foothills will help NAMI-sa continue these free educational programs.

Plan to experience one of NAMI-sa’s free educational programs for yourself. On Sunday, October 23, Judi Maikoff, NAMI-sa FaithNet Coordinator, will be here in our Activities Room at 9:00a for a special presentation about Suicide Prevention.

To learn even more about how NAMI Southern Arizona provides education, help and hope for those affected by mental illness and their loved ones, go online to www.namisa.org. ~ Leslie Johnson, Community Service Team.

To give monetary gifts to our monthly Community Service Emphasis, use the Community Service giving envelopes on the display table in the lobby or note “Monthly Community Service” on your donation; checks should be made payable to Lutheran Church of the Foothills. Place your donation in the offering basket or mail it to the church. You can also use your smart phone’s app to give online using the QR code published in Sunday’s worship bulletin. Finally, your Sunday Dollars (loose one dollar bills placed in the offering basket) will be automatically designated for this month’s Community Service Emphasis.

Responding Around the World

Whether hurricanes in the Caribbean, typhoons in the Pacific, earthquakes in Papua New Guinea or Mexico, or monsoon flooding in Pakistan, Lutheran Disaster Relief is there to help with recovery and relief. With your gifts to the Lutheran Disaster Response general fund, we can respond to as many disasters as possible--whenever and wherever they strike. Again and again, your continued gifts help neighbors whose lives have been upended. You can also give by picking up a Where Needed Most response form on the Activities Counter.

Next Primavera Delivery - October 21

To participate by providing needed items or delivering the groceries, please sign-up on the clipboard on the Activities Counter in the lobby. We--and the folks at Primavera Men's Shelter--appreciate your participation in this monthly ministry. ~ Community Service Team

Looking for Space to Rent

Habitat for Humanity Tucson is looking to temporarily rent a housing type space from you or someone you know to help support AmeriCorps NCCC, a full-time, team-based residential service program for 18-26 year-olds. They will be volunteering with us to help us build homes, do outreach and learn more about housing in our community. Teams live in the communities they serve to better understand the culture, participate in service-learning, and build leadership and life skills.

Habitat Tucson is taking on 8 members from January 9th-April 6th. Each team is overseen by a team lead, and all have background checks. Habitat Tucson needs housing (rental home, church, dorm, hotel at a discounted rate or an air bnb, or large RV) or a referral of someone they may know who would be willing to rent out their property to Habitat Tucson for 12 weeks. For more information, contact Gina Hansen, Volunteer Resources Manager, at [email protected]

Place your donations in the bin under the Community Service table in the lobby. ~ Patrice Frame

—LIFE TOGETHER—

Mental Illness Awareness Week Candlelight Vigil: October 4

Mental illness affects everyone directly or indirectly through family, friends or coworkers. In 1990, the U.S. Congress officially established the first full week of October as Mental Illness Awareness Week. On Tuesday, October 4, from 6:00p to 7:00p, the National Alliance on Mental Illness Southern Arizona (NAMI-sa) will hold a Candlelight Vigil in Reid Park at the Cancer Survivors Plaza (northeast corner of E 22nd St & S Lake Shore Ln). Father Rick Wilson from the Episcopal Church of St. Matthew will preside over the lighting of ten candles, each having a different meaning. Several people will speak about their their own road to recovery. If you cannot attend in person, please add mental illness recovery and understanding to your prayers on October 4.

Servant Opportunities

If you would enjoy serving within the congregation, consider these opportunities (contact the person named or Pastor Naomi for more information):

  • Help others see the work and the people of LCF through the lens of your camera by taking pictures of people and events. ~ Stacy Bade.
  • Use your computer skills as an Announcement Slideshow Creator. ~ Stewart McDonald.
  • Participate in leading worship in a variety of ways as part of the Sunday Worship Assistants team. ~ Barbara Burtnett.
  • Get some additional exercise by helping with trash and recycling. ~ Stacy Bade.

Attention, Ladies!

On the first Tuesday of every month from September to May, the Guild meets from 9:30a-12 noon in-person in the Activities Room and on Zoom. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, October 4, 2022. Bible study is from 9:30a-10:30a, using the "Gather" magazine found on the north counter in the lobby. Afterward, we have a business meeting and some of us go out to lunch (self-pay). All are welcome. If anyone is interested in teaching monthly or occasionally, we have a need for Bible study leaders. If you are interested, please contact Vicky Kuzel at (520) 444-8631. (New Zoom link) Click here to join Zoom meeting.  Meeting ID: 894 4138 9594 Passcode: 042490

"Gather" magazine for September and October is available on the counter near the west entrance into the Sanctuary. In addition, "Christ in Our Home" daily devotional booklets for October, November, and December are available on the counter near the east entrance into the Sanctuary. These denominational publications are provided by this congregation at no charge to you.

Name Badges. Please get in the habit of wearing your name badge to all events at church (receptions, coffee hours, classes) so newcomers can get to know your name. If you would like a name badge, sign up on clipboard that is on the kiosk in the lobby.

Sunday Dollars (loose dollar bills put into the offering basket) are designated for our monthly Community Service Emphasis. If you want to contribute to the Sunday Dollars by mail, please do not send cash in the mail. You may add a dollar or two to your check and then note “Two dollars for Sunday Dollars.” Our counters will take it from there. Thank you!

Our offering is a key part of our worship experience as we offer “ourselves, our time and our possessions.” Gifts may be received during worship, by mail, on our website, through your on-line banking, or electronically in other ways. We also encourage you to remember other non-profits that you regularly support. Your generosity means a great deal. Thank you!
