Dear Siblings in Christ,

"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." Jesus' instructions to us are pretty clear, and yet our hesitancy to "GO" continues to hold us back.

Join us in worship this Sunday, Holy Trinity Sunday, as we join together and seek to answer Jesus' challenge to GO!

Faithfully yours,

Pastor Naomi

—COMMUNITY SERVICE—

June Community Service: Single Mom Scholars

Single Mom Scholars (SMS) is a program of Interfaith Community Services of Tucson and is a pioneer in efforts to break the cycle of poverty through its two-generational approach. Through scholarships and wrap-around services, SMS empowers low-income single moms to earn a college degree while simultaneously working with their children to gain social capital, build leadership skills, and improve academic performance.

Studies have shown that low-income families with minor children face extra barriers that can affect the early years of a child’s development. An investment in these women is also an investment in their children--providing essential family stability and expanding the life outlook of these vulnerable youth by inspiring successful role modeling. In the course of the SMS program, 70 children have been positively impacted, through community engagement, educational enrichment, and leadership opportunities.

Please join Phil Lynn and Andrea Dillenburg in the Activities Room immediately after the June 4 service for an in-depth presentation of the program and an opportunity to ask questions. A wish list for in-kind donations is on the display table in the narthex. You may also make a monetary donation. Target and Walmart gift cards in any amount are also appreciated.

To give monetary gifts, use the Community Service giving envelopes on the display table in the Lobby or make checks payable to "Lutheran Church of the Foothills" and mark your donation "Single Mom Scholars". Place your donation in the Sunday offering basket or mail it to the church. You can also use your smartphone's app to give online using the QR code published in Sunday's worship bulletin. Finally, your Sunday dollars (loose dollar bills placed in the offering basket) will be automatically designated for this month's Community Service emphasis. ~Community Service team

June Drop-Off and Sorting Dates

Household Blessings is a ministry of Tanque Verde Lutheran Church that provides good quality used household furnishings, clothing, and other needed items to individuals and families through community ministry partners. They specialize in providing items for kitchen, bath, and bedrooms needed to set up an apartment or home. Drop-off dates are on the first full weekend of the month and sorting occurs the following week.

Volunteers are needed to help with drop-off for Saturday Night, June 3 (4:30p-5:00p) and Sunday Morning, June 4 (8:15a-8:45a). Sorting will be Thursday, June 8, starting at 8:00a at the Storage Garage on the north side of the parking lot. Followed at 9:30 by fellowship and nourishment.

If you have questions or items to donate, phone Donna Elmquist at 520.603.2399 or email welmquist@msn.com or phone Mari Eklund at 520.870.1772 or email marieklund@hotmail.com

Pathways Out of Poverty

Primavera celebrates 40 years of providing pathways out of poverty in the Tucson area.

YOUR contributions help! To participate by providing needed items or delivering the groceries for this month's collection and delivery on June 16, please sign-up on the clipboard on the Activities Counter in the lobby.

We--and the folks at Primavera Men's Shelter--appreciate your participation in this monthly ministry. Contact the Office if you would like to sign up. Food items for next month are due to the church by Friday, June 16, 1:00p. ~ Community Service Team

Treasures for TIHAN

Lutheran Church of the Foothills is proud to partner with Tucson Interfaith HIV/AIDS Network (TIHAN), a coalition of communities, businesses, individuals, and nonprofit groups working to help people with HIV live well.

Treasures for TIHAN is the organization's signature fundraising event. This year's theme is "Disco in the Desert" and has two parts. First, the 10-day Silent Online Auction will be accepting bids from Friday, May 26, at 8:00p through Saturday, June 3, at 4:30p. The online auction is free and open to all. The second part is the live, in-person "Disco in the Desert" on Saturday, June 3, from 2:00 to 5:00p. Tickets are $100 each or 2 for $150. A portion of each ticket is tax-deductible. Purchase tickets either online at https://tihan.org/treasures-for-tihan/ or call 520.299.6647. You can also call the TIHAN office if you are interested in auction volunteer opportunities.

Thank You!

Thank you to all you faithful servants for continuing to fill the basket at the west end of the Activities Counter with non-perishable food items for Interfaith Community Services (ICS). Since January 2023, LCF has donated over 135 pounds of non-perishable food. How do we know this? Well, whenever the food is delivered, the ICS volunteer weighs and writes it down on our donation slip.

If you would prefer to give a monetary donation make checks payable to Lutheran Church of the Foothills, mark your donation “ICS,” and put it in the Sunday offering basket. ~ Beth Daum.

On-Going Community Service Ministries:

  • Proceeds from your pocket change that are put into our Hunger Loose Change Jar (on the stand inside the entrance to our worship area) are shared with our church’s World Hunger program. Thanks for your generosity. May total: $44.50. ~ Charles & Pat Erickson.
  • To help with our church's response to current crises here in the United States and around the world, look for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Lutheran Disaster Response forms on the Activities Counter in the lobby. ~ Community Service Team.

Donate Pet Supplies

Sister José Women's Center, a shelter and day center that provides homeless women in Tucson a path towards independence, is still taking donations for the pets of guests. In addition to dry foods, the Center needs canned food with pull tabs for dogs and cats, kitty litter, dog sweaters, and coats and beds for both dogs and cats. The Center will also take new or gently used pet supplies such as beds, leashes, collars, and more. Place your donations in the bin under the Community Service table in the lobby. ~ Patrice Frame

Hellene Henrikson Legacy Fund Spring Grant Recipients

Greetings from the Hellene Henrikson Fund Board!

While you’ve not heard much from us, I can assure you we have been busy with our Spring Grant Round.

Once again, we participated in the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona’s (CFSA) annual CORE Grants round. This is the 4th year in which the Hellene Henrikson Legacy Fund has used this as its Spring Grant Round. The money granted in this round is for “general support” of each organization.

As in years past, the first step we take is to decide what the Fund's focus will be. This year our focus is immigration. We had no shortage of organizations from which to choose and their programs were varied. We had decided to grant a total of $90K, but in the end we granted a total of $100K between four different organizations. The organizations funded were:

  • The Inn of Southern Arizona - $30K
  • Iskashitaa Refugee Network - $30K
  • Southside Worker Center - $30K
  • Scholarships A-Z - $15K

On May 4, 2023, I attended the CORE Grants Celebration on the Community Foundation Campus. I love a celebration--especially when it includes handing out checks that will truly make a difference in the work these folks do. Once more it was: God’s Work. Our Hands.

Peace,

Kristen Birner

Fund Board chairperson
