Dear Servants and Friends,

As we celebrate Veteran's Day, I invite you to remember those family, friends, and neighbors who have served our country both past and present. Today, I am thankful for the service of my grandfathers, uncles, and cousins, but especially for my father Robert Olson (USAF), my brothers David Olson (US Army) and Joshua Olson (USAF), and my nephews Zachary Mayer (USAF) and Gavin Olson (USAF).

I invite you to join me in to lifting up this prayer today:

Almighty and ever-living God, we give you thanks for the men and women who have served and defended our country and the values of freedom and justice we hold so dear. Help us be mindful of the sacrifices they made and the hardship endured by their families and friends, so that we never take for granted the privileges they have secured for us. Hear us, we pray, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

-From the Prayer Book for the Armed Forces

Faithfully Yours,

Pastor Naomi

—COMMUNITY SERVICE—

Community Service Outreach for November

Our November community outreach is in partnership with Lutheran Social Services-Southwest (LSS-SW) on behalf of Immigration and Refugee Services. We are providing refugee families with grocery store gift cards in the amount of $25.00 from the following stores: Fry’s, Safeway, Wal-Mart and Food City. We have only a short time to collect these gift cards: the deadline for submission to the LSS-SW office is Wednesday, November 16. If you have any questions, contact Sylvia Strauss-Kolb on behalf of the Community Services Team.

To give monetary gifts to our monthly Community Service Emphasis, use the Community Service giving envelopes on the display table in the lobby or note “Monthly Community Service” on your donation; checks should be made payable to Lutheran Church of the Foothills. Place your donation in the offering basket or mail it to the church. You can also use your smart phone’s app to give online using the QR code published in Sunday’s worship bulletin. Finally, your Sunday Dollars (loose one dollar bills placed in the offering basket) will be automatically designated for this month’s Community Service Emphasis.

San Juan Bautista Assists Asylum Family

ELCA congregation San Juan Bautista, located in South Tucson, recently took in new residents to their parsonage. A Columbian family of 9, representing 4 generations, came legally into America through the asylum process, but lost their sponsor once they were here. San Juan Bautista has worked to help provide the needed legal assistance and is currently providing shelter at the parsonage.

At their October meeting, Council voted to send our remaining $1500 of emergency aid to San Juan Bautista to help offset the expenses to their congregation in providing care for this family--but this is only a temporary aid. Asylum seekers are unable to work while they are awaiting their legal decision and the process can take up to one year. They are ineligible for government aid, with the exception of WIC, which this family of 9 qualifies for because it is made up of 3 adult women, 3 teenage women, 1 nine-year-old girl, and 2 babies.

San Juan Bautista will need the assistance of ALL the congregations in our conference for months to come, and you can help in a few ways:

  1. Make a special gift to the church, ear marked for San Juan Bautista and we will pass it along.
  2. Reach out to Annette Chavez, Pastor Mateo's wife at San Juan Bautista, and ask to be included on the list of the family's individual needs that is emailed out as they become known.
  3. Contribute to the GoFundMe set up through Pastor Amalia at Our Saviour's: Colombia Care, organized by Amalia Vagts
  4. Finally, follow up with our church Council in the coming months and ask how they are working to help support San Juan Bautista in the critical work they do in South Tucson long term, so that families like this one continue to have a place to turn when they need help.

—CLASSES & OFFERINGS—

Sunday Faith Formation: Give Unto the Lord

In a month where we focus on Thanksgiving and generosity, let us come together to talk about why faith is a core value in truly living these principles today.

During the month of November join Pastor Naomi each Sunday at 9:00a in the Activities Room as we study "Give Unto the Lord: A Bible Study about Tithing."

"Every week we pass the offering plate without spending much time thinking about why we do so. Likewise, in a country where we spend so much time talking about money, we often forget that God has put a claim on the entirety of our lives. What might God’s claim on our whole lives mean for how we notice and share our gifts with God and others? What would it be like to promise to give a little bit of our whole lives to this world that God so loves? How would that change how we view money? How would that change how we view the neighbor?" --excerpt from "Give Unto the Lord: A Bible Study about Tithing"

Hope to see you there! ~Pastor Naomi

Sunday School for K through Grade 5

Sunday School for ages K through 5th grade will meet in the small meeting room. Using curriculum designed for a multi-age classroom, children will work in a buddy system and learn stories of faith. Whirl characters will engage kids in Biblical stories and help them link concepts to real life situations. Weekly take-home leaflets will help students dive into the Bible and use creative activities to extend the lesson. Each week children will finish out the morning with music time in the Sanctuary led by our choir director. Join us as we grow in our faith together! If you are interested in helping or leading Sunday School, please contact Pastor Naomi.
