HESGOUM - A Vigil
Reported by Mr. Armen Haig Capriellian
On Saturday, April 23, 2022, the ARF NY “Armen Garo” Gomideh, in collaboration with the Saint Sarkis Church, held a memorable event dedicated to the 107th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. It began with a “Hesgoum” vigil in honor of the 1.5 million victims of the Armenian Genocide. The attendees had the opportunity to place a flower under the icon of canonized martyrs. On display were a jar filled with sand and a stone brought directly from the Der Zor (Deir ez-Zor) in Syria, the very place where thousands of innocent Armenians lost their lives. where a small table was placed that also displayed sand and stone directly from Der Zohr Dessert in Syria. The very place where thousands of innocent Armenians were sent on their death march.

After the church service the attendees were escorted into the main hall for the evening’s program. Unger Armen Caprielian from the ARF NY “Armen Garo” Gomideh was the program’s Master of Ceremonies. The program began with the National Anthem “Mer Hairenik”, sang by all present.

In his opening remarks Unger Armen paid tribute to the genocide victims and those who valiantly fought for Armenia and Artsakh. The main speakers were Mrs. Lara Bardizbanian (co-director of the Saint Sarkis Sunday School), Jack Abajian (AYF NY “Hyortik” Chapter), Mrs. Talin Markarian, Chantelle Nasri (AYF NY “Moush” Chapter), and Mr. John Megerian Esq. (Megerian Law Firm, PLLC).

All shared heartfelt stories of genocide survivors in their respective families and stressed the importance of political advocacy and the passing down of both family and Armenian history and culture to future generations. The audience also had the pleasure of enjoying a musical interlude performed by the accomplished violinist Diana Vasilyan.

REV. Fr. Nareg Terterian, Pastor of Saint Sarkis Church, gave his closing remarks once again emphasizing the importance of “sharounagoutyun” (passing the torch) to the future generation and the vital role of our young generation. The evening ended with a lovely rendition of “Giligia” performed by the remarkably gifted Ms. Angelica Indzhigulyan.
The Fight Continues – NYC March for Justice
Reported by Ms. Chantelle Nasri , Photos Ms. Adrian Childress
Many cities, housing large Armenian diaspora communities, across the United States and around the world, took part in public demonstrations for justice and reparations this past Sunday, April 24. Each calendar year that turns grows heavier amongst the Armenian community, since the 2020 attacks on our homeland of Artsakh.

Although a protest occurs each year on the 24th of April in honor of the Armenian Genocide perpetuated by the Ottoman Turks, this year, the messaging included justice for Artsakh. For most youth members of the Armenian diaspora, Artsakh serves as a glimmer of hope to achieving a free, united, and independent Armenia. In the wake of Pashinyan’s leadership, this glimmer of hope was combusted. Although Stepanakert and other villages of the region remain, almost 70% of our ancestral land was swept from beneath us by the same acts that were carried out during the Genocide of 1915. “Genocide denied, is genocide repeated.”

Due to the pandemic and the gray cloud it casted over the city of New York, traditional rallies in the heart of Times Square were postponed in 2020 and 2021. However, the annual “March for Justice and Reparations” was carried out in its usual form as it does every year, hosted by the local AYF and ANC chapters of New York and New Jersey, beginning at St. Illuminator’s Armenian Apostolic Cathedral after the Divine Liturgy celebrated by Der Mesrob Lakissian, under the Auspices of H.E. Archbishop Anoushavan Tanelian, Prelate. With this year’s particular messaging being the focus of a unified Armenia, two particular stops were made along the way – One at the Azeri consulate, and the other at the Turkish consulate.

Mari Bijimenian, President of the AYF New York “Hyortik” Chapter and Legislative Fellow at the Armenian National Committee of America Eastern Region Office, shared her sentiments while standing outside the Azerbaijani Consulate, “Today, Armenia is still facing an existential threat. Our compatriots in Armenia and Artsakh are struggling and resisting against enemies that want to destroy the Armenian nation, and that want us to abandon the Armenian cause. They are fighting against enemies that surround us from the outside, but also enemies from within. Today, as a result of Nikol Pashinyan’s capitulation, Azeri troops and flags overlook our sacred ancestral lands.” Paying tribute to her ancestors, and all those martyred 107 years ago, Mari expressed the cyclical emotions that resurface amongst all Armenians, each April, “To be born Armenian means you are born indebted to your ancestors and to those who died protecting your right to exist as an Armenian. To be born Armenian also means you are tasked with the responsibility to ensure that, at the bare minimum, history does not repeat. We owe it to our ancestors, and we owe it to every Armenian whose life was taken from them because they were Armenian. We owe it to the survivors of the Armenian Genocide who continued to live their lives after enduring the worst atrocities imaginable, and decidedly raised their children as Armenians. Our struggle transcends lifetimes, and our work must continue.”

As the March for Justice continued up the avenue through the East Side of Manhattan, NY, the Turkish Consulate was greeted by the Armenian Diaspora, “Turkey is Guilty of Genocide.” Until this day, Turkish President, Erdogan, still denies the Genocide and the atrocities of mass killings, rape, and torture carried out by the Ottoman Turks of 1915. Niree Kaprielian of the AYF New Jersey “Arsen” Chapter took to the microphone relating the present-day turmoil to the Armenian Genocide of 1915, “The Armenian genocide began 107 years ago, but the attempt to eradicate Armenians has never ended. Since I was a child, I commemorated the Armenian genocide every year. And every year the fight was focused around gaining recognition of our history. In 2020 that narrative changed. The narrative was rewritten. It was no longer just about what’s happened in the past, but what is happening today.”

The March for Justice troops met with the Times Square Commemorative Services held on 46th Street and Broadway. This community event was led by the Knights and Daughters of Vartan. State Senator Bob Menendez made a few remarks, along with Congressman Frank Pallone, State Senator John Liu, and Thomas Suozzi. Co-Sponsors were also invited to speak, Dr. Ara Chalian of the ANCA, Bryan Ardouny of the Armenian Assembly of America, Scott Ohengian, Esq. of the Armenian Bar Association and many other influential Armenians from the diaspora. The Commemoration went on to include musical guest Elie Berberian who delivered “Hayer Miatsek” and “Kedashen” as part of his performances. Father Tavit Karamayan of the Eastern Diocese closed the program, offering a praying for our fallen soldiers and Martyrs of the Armenian Genocide, and Artsakh War of 2020. Sarine Zeitlian, Senior Member of the AYF Manhattan “Moush” Chapter shared, “My favorite part of it all was seeing the unity amongst the community that participated in the March [for Justice] and then gathering at Time Square. Seeing our Armenians come together for the same reasons made me very happy. We must remain as a community, taking action together, regardless of the circumstances.”

The local AYF and ANC chapters of New York and New Jersey would like to specially thank the AYF Eastern Region, ANCA Eastern Region, The ARF Chapters of NY and NJ, Homenetmen of NY and NJ, The Eastern Prelacy, St. Illuminator’s Armenian Apostolic Cathedral, St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church, St. Vartanantz Armenian Apostolic Church, organizers of the Times Square Commemorative Services, photographer Adrian Childress and of course, all those who attended.

HONORING THE PAST
This year marks the 60th Anniversary of St Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church in Douglaston.
Each week we will be highlighting an event from the past sixty years.
We hope you enjoy reminiscing!
April 29, 2022 Consecration of St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church by
His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia

On May 20, 1990, five years after the old Church was destroyed, the congregation watched the consecration of the new St. Sarkis Church. This was truly a day to rejoice and give thanks, a day when St. Sarkis Church was officially reborn. The two-day ceremony began Saturday evening May 19, with the “Turenpatzek Ceremony, the Opening of the Gates.”

Officiating during the consecration ceremonies was His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of the Holy See of Cilicia, assisted by Archbishop Mesrob Ashjian, Prelate of the Eastern Armenian Apostolic Church and a number of clergy. The church was not yet completely finished, yet it took on a different look as the consecration ceremony began. First the altar was consecrated and decorated, then, the four corners and the stations of the church. The Godfather of the Church, Jack Chadrjian, Esq., and the sixteen individuals serving as godfathers of the stations representing the Saints of the church took their respective positions.

With the singing of Lousavorya Yerusaghem, the consecration of the church was complete and the celebration of the first Divine Liturgy took place with His Holiness as celebrant and preacher. Commenting on the unfinished condition of the church, His Holiness said: “Either I came too soon or you moved too slow. But, regardless, the church has taken on life, it is alive, and what is unfinished will be finished, I am sure, before the end of the summer. It is the faith of the people that is important, for God is everywhere.”
We are excited to announce that on Sunday, May 15, 2022, we will be celebrating the "60th Anniversary of St Sarkis Church at St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church.

We look forward to celebrating this joyous occasion together!

LITURGICAL CALENDAR
GREEN SUNDAY, SUNDAY OF THE WORLD CHURCH
Easter Sunday is followed by a period of fifty days (Hinoonk). This period from the Resurrection to Pentecost (Hokekaloost) is dedicated to the glorification of the Resurrection. Each of the seven Sundays of Hinoonk has a special name. This Sunday, May 1, is Green Sunday (Ganach Giragi), also called Sunday of the World Church (Ashkharhamadoor), that commemorates the establishment in Jerusalem of the first Christian church where Christ had the Last Supper and met with the Apostles in the upper room after the Resurrection.
Green Sunday most probably originates from an ancient holiday celebrating spring. Our forefathers, seeing mother earth bloom after long winter months, glorified the Creator with an act of thanksgiving and celebrated by decorating the church and themselves with greenery. The reawakening of nature is symbolic of the Resurrection. Green is the color of life, freshness, and promise. After a barren winter and with the Resurrection we are filled with hope, life, and love.
Green Sunday is the perfect time for us to remember and strengthen our obligations as good stewards of the earth and caretakers of the gifts given to us by God.
You nations, made worthy to be called to give glory to Christ our God, come, sing to the Lord a new song, rejoice and praise his name with a new praise with the voice of Joy. O Christ, we who believe in you with true confession bless the mystery of your divine, life-giving economy glorifying your wonderful and awesome name, O Lord, Lord great over all the earth. Holy Church, bride initiated into the heavenly mystery, rejoice to the glory of the all-Holy Trinity who has adorned you with all its gifts and who is to crown you with glory the divine light with all his saints.
SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY
THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. PETER THE APOSTLE (2.1-10)
Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
As you come to him, the living Stone-rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him- you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says:
"See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a chosen and precious cornerstone,
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame." Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,
"The stone the builders rejected
has become the capstone, and,
"A stone that causes men to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall." They stumble because they disobey the message-which is also what they were destined for.
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (2:23-3:12)
Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him."
In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again."
"How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!"
Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.' The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."
"How can this be?" Nicodemus asked.
"You are Israel's teacher," said Jesus, "and do you not understand these things? I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?
