ST. GREGORY OF DATEV INSTITUTE |

The St. Gregory of Datev Institute will once again hold a virtual Summer Program for youth ages 13-18 from June 28 to July 2, 2021. Sponsored by the Armenian Religious Education Council (AREC), the Program will be an hour long, 11:00 am to noon, Monday to Friday, and it will include two mini-presentations, focusing on the Bible, the teachings and the history of the Armenian Church, along with engaging discussions on faith-related issues. We have opted for the virtual format due to the Covid pandemic.
We invite our youth to take part in this unique Christian educational program. New lists of war orphans are coming to us through the St. Nerses the Great Organization office in Yerevan. Currently, 71 orphans from fathers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the war in Artsakh are registered in the waiting list of the St. Nerses the Great Organization in Yerevan, along with other 11 orphans with heartbreaking stories. We appeal to the generosity of our fellow Armenians to sponsor one or more of them.

A READING FROM THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE ROMANS (9.30-10.4)
What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; but Israel, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it. Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the "stumbling stone."As it is written:
"See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes men to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall,
and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame."
Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.
ՊՕՂՈՍ ԱՌԱՔԵԱԼԻ ՆԱՄԱԿԸ ՀՌՈՄԱՅԵՑԻՆԵՐՈՒՆ (9.30-10.4)
Ուրեմն ի՞նչ կ’եզրակացնենք: Հեթանոսները, որոնք Աստուծոյ արդարութեան չէին հետեւեր՝ արդարացան, որովհետեւ Քրիստոսի հաւատացին. մինչդեռ Իսրայէլի ժողովուրդը չարդարացաւ Մովսէսի Օրէնքին միջոցաւ, որ տրուած էր՝ մարդիկը արդարացնելու համար: Ինչո՞ւ: Որովհետեւ չհաւատաց Քրիստոսի, եւ կը կարծէր թէ Օրէնքին գործադրութեամբը պիտի արդարանայ: Ատիկա իսկ պատճառ եղաւ որ գլորին «գայթակղութեան առիթ հանդիսացող քար»ին վրայ, այսինքն՝ Քրիստոսի, որուն համար մարգարէութեան մէջ գրուած է.-
«Ահա ես Սիոնի մէջ կը դնեմ քար մը՝
որ գլորումի առիթ պիտի ըլլայ, ժայռ մը՝

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MATTHEW (13.24-30)
Jesus told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.
"The owner's servants came to him and said, 'Sir, didn't you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?'
" 'An enemy did this,' he replied.
"The servants asked him, 'Do you want us to go and pull them up?'
" 'No,' he answered, 'because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.' "

Յիսուս ուրիշ առակ մըն ալ խօսեցաւ անոնց ու ըսաւ.
– Մարդ մը լաւ սերմեր ցանեց իր արտին մէջ: Գիշեր մը, երբ ամէն մարդ քնացած էր, անոր թշնամին եկաւ եւ որոմ ցանեց ցորենին մէջ ու գնաց: Երբ սերմերը աճեցան եւ սկսան հասկ կազմել, այն ատեն որոմն ալ երեւցաւ: Տանտիրոջ ծառաները եկան եւ ըսին անոր. «Տէ՛ր, դուն միայն լաւ սերմեր չցանեցի՞ր արտիդ մէջ. ուրկէ՞ հապա եկաւ որոմը»: Անիկա պատասխանեց. «Ասիկա թշնամի մարդու գործ է»: Ծառաները ըսին. «Կ’ուզե՞ս որ երթանք եւ որոմը քաղենք»: «Ո՛չ,- պատասխանեց տէրը,- որպէսզի չըլլայ թէ որոմը քաղած ատեն ցորենն ալ միասին արմատախիլ ընէք: Ձգեցէք որ երկուքն ալ միասին աճին մինչեւ հունձքի ժամանակը. այն ատեն հնձուորներուն կ’ըսեմ.- Նախ որոմը քաղեցէք, խուրձեր կազմեցէք այրելու համար, եւ ապա քաղեցէք ցորենը եւ ամբարեցէք շտեմարաններուս մէջ»:

IN LOVING MEMORY OF MR. GAYDZAG BOYADJIAN

It is with deep sadness that St. Sarkis Church and Community mourn the loss of one of its beloved members and former BOT chairman, Mr. Gaydzag Boyadjian.
Gaydzag Boyadjian was born on July 17, 1942 in Anjar, Lebanon to Nishan and Ossana Boyadjian, both survivors of the Genocide and Musa Dagh resistance. After completing his primary education in Anjar and high school in Beirut, he attended the prestigious American University of Beirut (AUB) with the assistance of a full scholarship from the Gulbenkian Foundation, graduating with honors earning a B.S. in 1965 and an M.S. in Mathematics in 1967. After graduation, Gaydzag was invited to teach mathematics at AUB, which he did until 1971. Eager to explore new horizons, Gaydzag came to the U.S. in 1971 and was welcomed by his relatives who lived in Philadelphia. There, he found employment in the Computer Department at Thomas Jefferson University. Always active in the Armenian community, he had the opportunity to meet and eventually marry in 1976 the love of his life, Ms. Seta Debeserian. After moving to New York, he enjoyed a long and successful career working in Computer Data Processing in major companies holding various important executive positions and retiring in 2014. Seta and Gaydzag were blessed with two children, Nyeree and Nishan, both accomplished professionals and later on with 3 beautiful grandchildren, Alexander, Isabelle and Emelia.
True to his Anjar roots and name “Gaydzag meaning Lightening”, he possessed unique qualities as a strong, fiery, fearless, patriotic, courageous and intelligent individual, an avid chef, connoisseur and collector of art and sometimes with opinionated views on life. He was extremely devoted to his family, church and friends. Family always came first. He gave boundless love to his wife, children and grandchildren and was very proud of their accomplishments. Most precious for him was the time spent with the little ones.
Mr. Boyadjian’s association with St. Sarkis goes back to the 1980’s as member of the original church located in Bayside where he forged lifelong friendships and participated in many church activities especially kebob grilling during the traditional festivals. After the tragedy of the fire and the need to rebuild, both Seta and Gaydzag were extremely generous in their support of the church. During a fundraiser in 1987, they donated back the entire substantial amount of money won at the church raffle. He served as member of the Board of Trustees from 1991-1994 & 2003-2005 becoming its chairman for two years from 2003 to 2005. He also served in other capacities including chairman of the Picnic Committee for several years, volunteering during Summer Camp preparing meals for the children and helping with Saturday School. Gaydzag was always ready and willing to help St. Sarkis Church in any way he could, financially or otherwise.
As for those of us fortunate to be the recipients of his friendship, we will never forget his hospitality and gourmet cooking, loyalty, love and support he bestowed upon us, and will especially miss his smile every time we take group photos (“acolo”), an inside joke shared with his Romanahai friends.
For the past year, Gaydzag waged a valiant battle against pancreatic cancer, always believing that his willpower and positive attitude will help him overcome impossible odds. He succeeded for a while but his destiny was different.
The Pastor, Board of Trustees and congregation of Saint Sarkis Church extend their deepest condolences to Mrs. Seta Boyadjian, his daughter Dr. Nyeree and son-in-law Dr. Edmond Demirdjan and their children Alexander and Isabelle, & his son Nishan and daughter-in-law Silva Boyadjian and their daughter Emilia.
May God Bless His Soul and May He Rest in Peace! Amen

SAHAG AND MESROB: THE HOLY TRANSLATORS
The Armenian Church and the Armenian language have helped Armenians defeat existential threats. The Armenian language as a factor in national survival is second only to the conversion of the Armenians to Christianity and the establishment of a national church. Thus, language has played a dual role for the Armenians: first, as a medium of communication; second and more important, as a cohesive force for national survival.
The invention of the Armenian alphabet in A.D. 406 by St. Mesrob produced a linguistic tool as remarkable as the language for which it was devised. The Armenian alphabet was invented and used for the Armenian language alone. It was designed to be a perfect phonetic representation of the spoken language.
It is even more amazing that a large and noteworthy body of literature grew immediately, using an alphabet that was a completely new invention and not an evolution of an earlier alphabet. If the Armenian alphabet had not been a perfect instrument for writing Armenian, it would have been impossible to use it to translate the Bible and the many other works that marked the early Golden Era of Armenian literature in the fifth century.
Today, June 24, the Armenian Church celebrates the Feast of Saints Sahag Bartev and Mesrob Mashdotz, the Holy Translators. The feasts dedicated to the Holy Translators are among the most beloved commemorations for Armenians. Sahag and Mesrob are honored two times during the liturgical year: as the leaders of the cultural movement, on the Thursday following the fourth Sunday after Pentecost, which is today, and on the second Saturday in October along all the translators. The visionary leadership of these two men who recognized the necessity of an Armenian alphabet changed the course of Armenian history. The two saints, Sahag and Mesrob, are forever linked in the minds and hearts of the Armenian people.
KING DRTAD, QUEEN ASHKHEN, PRINCESS KHOSROVITOUKHT
This Saturday, June 26, the Armenian Church remembers King Drtad, Queen Ashkhen, and Princess Khosrovitoukht. After torturing and condemning St. Gregory to the pit, and after his cruel and fatal treatment of the Hripsimiantz nuns, King Drtad became inflicted with strange debilitating maladies. Queen Ashkhen and the king’s sister, Khosrovitoukht (who had secretly become a Christian) convinced the king that only Gregory could cure him. Thus, Gregory was released from the deep pit. With the king’s subsequent recovery, all three helped Gregory spread Christianity throughout Armenia. In their later years the queen and princess lived in the fortress of Garni and the king retired to St. Gregory’s retreat on Mt. Sepouh.
FEAST OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE BOX OF THEOTOKOS
We can only imagine the joy of finding possessions of the Holy Mother. This Sunday, June 27, is the feast of the Discovery of the Belt of the Theotokos. Because there are no relics of the Holy Mother’s earthly body (she was assumed into Heaven), her personal belongings became the object of devotion and veneration. During the time of the early Church, when Christians were persecuted, her possessions were kept hidden and secret. Her belt was the first item to be discovered in Jerusalem in the fifth century. This discovery is the basis for one of the eight feast days in the Armenian liturgical calendar devoted to the Holy Mother.
