CONVERSATION WITH HIS EMINENCE BISHOP MASIS ZOBOUYAN
Reported by Mrs. Maria Simonian-Berber
|
|
On Sunday, October 10th, following church services, the St. Sarkis community gathered in Pagoumian hall for a conversation with His Eminence Bishop Massis Zobouyan, Prelate of Syria, to discuss the current situations in Syria.
During the meeting, His Eminence Bishop Massis Zobouyan thanked His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan and Father Nareg for allowing him this opportunity to present on this very important topic.
He also thanked Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian who has been an essential part of establishing these occasions. His Eminence Bishop Massis Zobouyan was in New York to simply visit with family, but when given the opportunity to discuss the current challenges that the faithful face in Syria, he wanted to disseminate this information.
The Bishop of Syria opened with referencing the Armenian churches in Syria and how despite the precarious situation and the large number of Armenians who have fled the country, the church has managed to stay active and has a flourishing number of parishioners. He discussed how the doors of many Armenian schools in the region were open to all Armenian students.
Though some Armenian families struggle to pay for their child’s school tuition, the prelacy has aided in these dire circumstances through the help and financial support of Armenians from all over the diaspora. He emphasized the role of the church in helping the Armenian community, be it spiritually, educationally or financially.
His Eminence concluded his talk by answering specific questions by the parishioners present. He highlighted the notion that by strengthening the churches and schools in Syria, that this in turn strengthens Armenia.
Several parishioners were so moved by His Eminence Bishop Massis that they opened their hearts and offered monetary donations to help aid in the situation in Syria. The spontaneous fundraiser raised $11,050.00!

A year ago and following the deadly blast of the Port in Beirut, Lebanon, we launched a fundraising campaign here at St. Sarkis Church to aid Armenian families and institutions who suffered greatly from that tragedy. Subsequently, as a sign of solidarity, care, and support, our community generously raised over $35k and transferred it to our Armenian sisters and brothers in Lebanon through the Armenian Prelacy.
A year later, the situation in Lebanon has worsened tremendously. It's pretty hard for us to imagine what it's like not to have air conditioning at a 100-degree temperature or not to have electricity to keep the fridge running or natural gas to cook a hot meal, let alone the challenges of providing medical care to the sick. Thousands of Armenian families are trying to survive this chaos. The World Bank said, "the financial crisis Lebanon is currently facing could rank among the world's three worst since the mid-1800s. The currency has lost more than 90 percent of its value. Unemployment has skyrocketed as businesses have shut down". Reuters reported that "The country is running out of critical medicines. The U.N. is warning of a looming water crisis, and fuel shortages are paralyzing even essential services and miles-long queues forming at gas stations with little or no petrol to sell." These are the daily struggles of our brothers and sisters in Lebanon, a country once was named Switzerland of the Middle East.
In a letter addressed to the Armenian communities in the USA, His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, wrote the following: "We appeal to you to try again to help the Armenians of Lebanon at this difficult stage in their lives." His Holiness specifies that the collected funds will serve the social, humanitarian, health, and educational needs of Armenians in Lebanon.
Let us respond to this humanitarian appeal with a spirit of generosity. Let us give, knowing that we are somewhat alleviating the suffering of an Armenian family that might look much like your own family. Let them know that they are not forgotten. Let's engage in this act of mercy and charity, "remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" (Acts 20:35)

I am confident of your generosity. I know that together we can make a difference. Therefore, the Pastor and the Board of Trustees of St. Sarkis Church are committing to raise $10,000.00 within the next 15 days*. Will you help us reach our goal?
|
|
I am grateful for your continuous support.
Prayerfully,
Fr. Nareg Terterian
Pastor

* The raised funds will be transferred to the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia through our parent organization - The Eastern Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church

Dear Parishioners and Friends,
We hope this letter finds you and your loved ones in good health. 2021 brought greater hope in our lives as the Covid-19 pandemic eased its grip internationally but for Armenians worldwide, 2021 also marked two painful events: first, the aftermath of Armenia’s war with Azerbaijan and subsequent humanitarian needs associated with displacement, loss of life and medical and mental trauma, second, the deteriorating monetary and political conditions in Lebanon have prompted religious leaders and organizations to seek financial aid for their suffering brethren.
Within this scenario, St. Sarkis Church is slowly returning to some degree of normalcy with most programs being reactivated. In an attempt to look positively toward the future, the 2022 calendar is dedicated to “Hope and Rebirth.” It will display biblical quotes and will be complemented by visually inspiring photographs of hope and rebirth.
We would like to appeal to our parishioners to share with us photographs taken by them (mostly scenery) that convey these sentiments. Kindly submit your photos in the form below. 12 photographs will be selected one for each page.
We greatly appreciate your input and commitment to St. Sarkis Church.
Please send in your photos by October 17, 2021

The first "Spiritual Basics" Bible Study session was held on Tuesday, October 12, 2021. The session's theme was "Encountering Jesus," and the study focused on a passage from the Gospel of John (Jn 4:7-30) where the life of the Samaritan Woman is changed upon encountering Jesus by the well. Fr. Nareg explored lessons from the biblical narrative applicable to our daily lives, and the participants engaged in discussion.
Next Tuesday, the group will read Mark 2:1-12, and the discussion will focus on "our Need for Others."

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE GALATIANS (4.3-18)
So also, when we were children, we were in slavery under the basic principles of the world. But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father." So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.
Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods. But now that you know God-or rather are known by God-how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you.
I plead with you, brothers, become like me, for I became like you. You have done me no wrong. As you know, it was because of an illness that I first preached the gospel to you. Even though my illness was a trial to you, you did not treat me with contempt or scorn. Instead, you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God, as if I were Christ Jesus himself. What has happened to all your joy? I can testify that, if you could have done so, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me. Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth? Those people are zealous to win you over, but for no good. What they want is to alienate you from us, so that you may be zealous for them. It is fine to be zealous, provided the purpose is good, and to be so always and not just when I am with you.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (4:14-22)
Then Jesus filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, "today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. "Isn't this Joseph's son?" they asked.

THE HOLY EVANGELISTS
This Saturday, October 16, the Armenian Church commemorates the Holy Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, the authors of the four Gospels. The word Evangelist comes from the Greek euangelistes which means “one who brings good news.” Evangelists are given the special ability by the Holy Spirit to communicate the Gospel of Jesus Christ clearly and effectively. In the early days of the church evangelism was the work of the apostles. By the third century, the authors of the four canonical Gospels became known as the Holy Evangelists, and as the church grew “evangelist” began to denote a specific office that could include “apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers” (see Ephesians 4:11-12).
Matthew is the patron of the Church’s mission. The Gospel attributed to him closes with Jesus’ command to His disciples and followers to, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20
Mark had significant influence on the advancement of Christianity. Although the Gospel according to Mark is a narrative of the life of Jesus, theologians consider it to be a handbook of discipleship. The dominant message is that being a Christian is not only to believe in Jesus Christ, it is also living according to the example set by Jesus. According to tradition, Mark was the first bishop of Alexandria. One of the most magnificent cathedrals in the world is named after him in Venice, where his relics are kept.
Luke is the author of the third Gospel and the Book of Acts. He is considered to be the patron of physicians and artists. The Gospel according to Luke describes Jesus as “the healer of a broken world.” Luke is also noted for his concern for the poor, the marginalized, women, and social outcasts. His Gospel does not end with the Resurrection, but continues to Pentecost and the eternal presence of Christ in the world. Traditionally he is believed to be one of the Seventy and the unnamed disciple in Emmaus.
John, often called the “beloved disciple,” is the author of the fourth Gospel. He was the only one of the twelve disciples who stood at the foot of the Cross. Jesus entrusted his mother to John’s care on the day of the Crucifixion. The best-known verse in his Gospel is John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” According to tradition, John left Jerusalem after attending the first council (35 A.D.) and went to Asia Minor and settled in Ephesus. He was exiled to the island of Patmos where he wrote the book of Revelation, although more recently scholars have concluded that John the Apostle and John of Patmos were two different people.
