RECONNECT RETREAT: SALT & LIGHT YOUTH GROUP
Reported by Mrs. Nyrie Bedrossian
|
|
On Sunday, October 24th, the St. Sarkis Salt & Light Youth Group held a Reconnect Retreat at St. Sarkis Church., which was held in the afternoon following Badarak, The purpose of the Retreat was for the youth to explore different forms of prayer with their facilitators. The afternoon was set up with 5 different Prayer Stations, each station led by a facilitator who would introduce the groups to a particular form of prayer.
The five stations that the groups rotated through were Scripture, Praying Privately, Praying with One Another, Journaling, and Worship. At each station, a designated Salt & Light Facilitator would provide an overview of their particular form of prayer, as well as have a discussion with the youth to encourage participation. The station rotations ended with the entire group meeting together in the Sanctuary with Der Nareg, where he discussed the importance of prayer in the form of Worship, on Sundays during Badarak. Following his discussion, he invited a very special guest, His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan, to say a few heartfelt words to the youth in attendance. Archbishop Choloyan commended the kids for attending the Retreat, and shared with them the importance of prayer, whether it be alone, with a loved one, with a stranger, or with their community.
All 40 youth in attendance were given a special Salt & Light Prayer Journal to take home with them, along with other useful resources from each Prayer Station that will hopefully encourage them to continue to explore the different prayer formats at home as they say their daily prayers.
The afternoon ended with everyone sharing a meal together in the main hall and the youth having some time for socialization. We are thrilled with the attendance and engagement we saw from our Salt & Light Youth Group at our first main in-person session since the pandemic. We look forward to seeing the youth at our future sessions in November and December.

Last Tuesday's Bible Study discussion focused on the Gospel of Matthew (14:22-33) "Out of the Boat." Reading the miracle of Jesus walking on water and Peter's attempt to do the same, the group explored the ideas of prayer, faith, trust, fear, and courage.
Next Tuesday, the group will read Luke 15:11-32, and the discussion is titled "Homecoming Celebration."
"Spiritual Basics" is the theme of a 6-session Bible Study on Zoom format on Tuesdays, October 12 - November 17, 2021.

UPDATE ON AID FOR LEBANON FUNDRAISER
|
|
A year ago and following the deadly blast of the Port in Beirut, Lebanon, we launched a fundraising campaign here at St. Sarkis Church to aid Armenian families and institutions who suffered greatly from that tragedy. Subsequently, as a sign of solidarity, care, and support, our community generously raised over $35k and transferred it to our Armenian sisters and brothers in Lebanon through the Armenian Prelacy.
A year later, the situation in Lebanon has worsened tremendously. It's pretty hard for us to imagine what it's like not to have air conditioning at a 100-degree temperature or not to have electricity to keep the fridge running or natural gas to cook a hot meal, let alone the challenges of providing medical care to the sick. Thousands of Armenian families are trying to survive this chaos. The World Bank said, "the financial crisis Lebanon is currently facing could rank among the world's three worst since the mid-1800s. The currency has lost more than 90 percent of its value. Unemployment has skyrocketed as businesses have shut down". Reuters reported that "The country is running out of critical medicines. The U.N. is warning of a looming water crisis, and fuel shortages are paralyzing even essential services and miles-long queues forming at gas stations with little or no petrol to sell." These are the daily struggles of our brothers and sisters in Lebanon, a country once was named Switzerland of the Middle East.
In a letter addressed to the Armenian communities in the USA, His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, wrote the following: "We appeal to you to try again to help the Armenians of Lebanon at this difficult stage in their lives." His Holiness specifies that the collected funds will serve the social, humanitarian, health, and educational needs of Armenians in Lebanon.
Let us respond to this humanitarian appeal with a spirit of generosity. Let us give, knowing that we are somewhat alleviating the suffering of an Armenian family that might look much like your own family. Let them know that they are not forgotten. Let's engage in this act of mercy and charity, "remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" (Acts 20:35)

I am grateful for your continuous support.
Prayerfully,
Fr. Nareg Terterian
Pastor

* The raised funds will be transferred to the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia through our parent organization - The Eastern Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church

Dear Parishioners and Friends,
We hope this letter finds you and your loved ones in good health. 2021 brought greater hope in our lives as the Covid-19 pandemic eased its grip internationally but for Armenians worldwide, 2021 also marked two painful events: first, the aftermath of Armenia’s war with Azerbaijan and subsequent humanitarian needs associated with displacement, loss of life and medical and mental trauma, second, the deteriorating monetary and political conditions in Lebanon have prompted religious leaders and organizations to seek financial aid for their suffering brethren.
Within this scenario, St. Sarkis Church is slowly returning to some degree of normalcy with most programs being reactivated. In an attempt to look positively toward the future, the 2022 calendar is dedicated to “Hope and Rebirth.” It will display biblical quotes and will be complemented by visually inspiring photographs of hope and rebirth.
Thank you to those of you who submitted photos. They will be shared with our community soon.

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE EPHESIANS (1.1-14)
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will- to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment-to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.
In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession-to the praise of his glory.
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (8:17-21)
For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, nor is anything secret secret that will not become known and come to light. Then pay attention to how you listen, for to those who have, more will be given, and from those who do not have, even what they seem to have will be taken away."
Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. And he was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you." But he said to them, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it."

ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM
On Saturday, Oct. 30, the Armenian Church commemorates St. John Chrysostom (Hovhan Voskeperan), a notable Christian bishop and preacher in Syria and Constantinople. He is famous for his eloquence—Chrysostom means “golden mouth.” The Orthodox Church honors him as a saint and one of the “three holy hierarchs” (along with Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian). He was declared a Doctor of the Universal Church at the Council of Chalcedon in 451 and named patron of preachers by Pope Pius X.
John converted to Christianity in 368 when he was barely 21 years old. He renounced a large inheritance and promising legal career and went to live in a mountain cave where he studied the Bible. He was later ordained a priest and soon his sermons were attracting huge audiences. He challenged wealthy Christians, whose generosity was confined to donating precious objects for display in churches. “The gift of a chalice may be extravagant in its generosity,” he said, “but a gift to the poor is an expression of love.”
His outspoken criticism was not appreciated by the hierarchy and he was sent into exile at various times. He had a profound influence on the doctrines and theology of the Armenian Church because he spent the final years of his exile in Armenia. Some of his important works have survived only in Armenian manuscripts.
