On this Father's Day I greet all the Fathers in our community. I great also our Spiritual Fathers. I pray for the blessing of our Heavenly Father through the words of the Holy Eucharist:
"True God and Merciful Father, we thank you, for you have honored us more than the blessed patriarchs, in spite of our sinful nature; for while you allowed them to call you their God, you were, in your compassion for us, pleased to be called Father by us. O Lord we pray you, make the grace of this new relationship with us to shine forth and to flourish in your Holy Church" Amen.

ANCA and ARF Representatives Discuss the Road Ahead with New York Community at St. Sarkis Church |

Douglaston, New York – On Saturday, June 12, 2021, the Armenian National Committee of New York (“ANC-NY”) held its first in-person event since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event, entitled “The Road Ahead: The Future of Activism Post-Genocide Recognition,” took place at St. Sarkis Church, under the auspices of the Very Rev. Fr. Sahag Yemishian, Vicar General at the Armenian Prelacy of the Eastern United States, and Rev. Fr. Nareg Terterian, pastor of St. Sarkis Church. Also in attendance were ARF Eastern U.S.A. “Shiragian” Central Committee members Ani Tchaglasian, Valot Atakhanian, Steve Mesrobian, Paulie Haroian and John Mkrtschjan, as well as representatives from the Permanent Mission of Armenia to the United Nations, Mr. Davit Knyazyan, Deputy Permanent Representative, and Mr. Albert Gevorgyan, Counsellor.
ANC-NY chair Nazareth Markarian, Esq., opened the program with a message of resilience and hope. He stressed the importance of Artsakh, calling it the citadel that guards Armenia. He stated that although what occurred during the 44-day was a travesty, it was not a total calamity. “We still have Armenia, we still have Stepanakert, and we still have hope, and that hope is what is going to serve us in reclaiming the lands that we lost,” said Mr. Markarian before introducing Elizabeth Chouldjian, the Communications Director of the ANCA Washington D.C. office.
Ms. Chouldjian discussed the challenges and opportunities to advance our shared community priorities during these difficult times. She acknowledged the generation of Genocide survivors who set the foundation for community organization and activism, uniting around the shared goal of securing the long-term viability and prosperity of a free, independent, and united Armenia. She also discussed the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the Biden Administration on April 24, 2021, but stressed that it is not the end of Armenian-American activism. While Turkey’s gag-rule is over, the road ahead must focus on securing justice for the people of Artsakh who were forced to flee their ancestral homeland and the POWs who have been tortured in captivity for over 7 months, as well passing legislation that condemns Azerbaijan for its actions and securing funding for Armenia and Artsakh. She also stressed the importance of investing in our youth and programs such as the ANCA’s Leo Sarkissian internship.
Ms. Chouldjian ended her presentation by stating that while the defense of Armenia and Artsakh depends primarily on the soldiers standing guard against an advancing enemy, the Armenian Nation has a second army which here in the U.S. is represented by the ANCA, our broader community, and the coalitions that we build, leveraging our collective power to guarantee freedom and justice for our people.
The next speaker, George Aghjayan representing the ARF Eastern U.S.A. Central Committee, echoed Chouldjian’s sentiments and pointed out that the affirmation of the Genocide did not happen with President Biden’s statement, rather, the President acknowledged what was already self-evident and had become so well-known and accepted as fact in the United States. He stressed that the war in Artsakh and the effort to wipe out any trace of Armenians is a continuation of the Armenian Genocide and should be understood it that way. “In the days after the war, I really felt like I understood how my grandparents felt in the 1920s with the collapse of the First Republic [of Armenia] and the destitution from the Genocide, and the despair it must have caused them,” said Mr. Aghjayan. But he also spoke about how he gained strength from realizing how much that generation accomplished, how much they gave us, and how they rebuilt our nation after those horrendous days. He mentioned that his respect and admiration for that generation only grew along with his determination to uphold the standard that they set. Mr. Aghjayan stressed that if we want to honor that generation of our families, we must build towards the future so that next time we are prepared, and that every one of our communities and every one of us is more capable of contributing towards helping our people. Mr. Aghjayan ended his talk with perhaps the quote of the night when he said: “our enemies are strong, but we are stronger when we are united.”
Closing the program, Very Rev. Fr. Sahag Yemishian spoke about the danger of cheap values and expressed the need to understand and value our Church, Hai Tahd, culture and history, because they give us our true Armenian identity today. “We need events like this to feel as strong Armenians,” said Rev. Fr. Nareg Terterian, pastor of St. Sarkis Church, in his brief comments before the program ended with a prayer.
The evening concluded with an informal question and answer session moderated by Chouldjian and Aghjayan, and a cocktail reception hosted by the ANC-NY chapter.

The Sunday Of Salt & Light Youth Group

Last Sunday, June 13th was Sunday of the Salt & Light Youth Group at St. Sarkis Church. This was a simple yet very symbolic day for not only our youth group members, but also for the parish of St. Sarkis Church as it brought our members and their families back to the fundamentals of our involvement in the church community, Badarak and Fellowship Hour.
It has been a long and challenging year since March 2020 when the COVID pandemic hit, with most, if not all, of our church gatherings being cancelled or transitioned to online events. With the absence of our youth group in-person sessions this past year as well as the absence of Fellowship Hour after church services, Der Nareg and our youth group coordinators felt the best way for our members to reconnect was back in the church sanctuary at a Badarak dedicated to the youth. Our members actively participated in the Badarak service that day, with two of our girls reading from the scriptures, and many of our boys serving on the Altar. Der Nareg addressed the youth during his sermon with a heartfelt message about the idea of mercy from the teachings of St. Nerses the Great. He encouraged the youth to practice having mercy towards others, but more importantly to practice being merciful towards themselves, ultimately asking them to reflect on using their time wisely with activities that promote knowledge and self growth, and most importantly activities that preserve and continue their proud Armenian culture and heritage.
Following Badarak, youth group members, their families and parishioners in attendance participated in the first Fellowship Hour since the pandemic hit last year. It was a wonderful and vibrant Fellowship hour sponsored by Salt & Light Families, that filled our Main Hall with the beautiful sounds of chatter and laughter. On behalf of our Salt & Light Youth Group coordinators, we thank all of our families that contributed towards the Fellowship Hour and we hope to have more Sundays of the Salt & Light Youth Group in the future.

Suzanne & Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School |

After a year of Covid, a year of Zoom classes and the retiring of our beloved principal, it was decided that the Suzanne & Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School needed a committee to get back on track. An Education Committee was created and its mission is to continue to instill the importance of teaching Armenian language and culture to our children. The committee consists of a variety of like-minded individuals who want to see our students flourish and to be educated and proud of their Armenian identity. The committee has hit the pavement running by holding meetings with the new principals, the director of the Prelacy’s ANEC program and other internal meetings to brainstorm and discuss our “to do” list. We will meet regularly so that once September comes around our Saturday School will be ready to welcome back all of our smiling students. |

Dear Parishioners,
It is with extreme pleasure and gratitude that we, Nayiry Injoyan and Aleene Voskerijian, accept the positions of co-principals of St. Sarkis Suzanne & Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School. We’d also like to congratulate Dg. Nairy Zohrabian for her extremely dedicated nearly 20 years of service to St. Sarkis Suzanne & Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School. Her work has not gone unnoticed, and we applaud her for the love and devotion she has shown the students, staff, parents, and entire community during her time as principal. We hope to continue to uphold the legacy that she has left behind.
As we embark on this new chapter at our Saturday School, it is our primary goal to create an environment where the connection between teachers, students, and parents facilitates meaningful learning experiences for our youth. We believe that leading with connection and building relationships with our youth will create a strong foundation for life-long learning and engagement between our youth and their Armenian community here at St. Sarkis Church. It has become increasingly important for our youth to place value in learning the Armenian language, history, music, and religion, and we hope to help actualize that.
We would like to let you know that registration has begun. The two links needed to register are below. One is for registration and one is for payment. The tuition for the coming year will be $600 per child. If you have paid your St. Sarkis church membership dues for 2021, then you will receive a $50 discount so the tuition will be $550 per child. As we would like to have a clear understanding of enrollment, we ask the following of you. Please register you child/children by June 30th. This is our deadline. Please keep in mind that we also require a $150 deposit for each child at this time. Registration is not complete if the payment step has not been completed. This $150 will be put toward your tuition amount. If you register your child/children after June 30th, then there will be a late fee of $200 which will not be toward your tuition amount. To make this transition as smooth as possible we kindly ask that you are diligent in registering your children.
We are happy to announce that our first day of the 2021-2022 school year will begin on Saturday, September 18th, 2021. With the current CDC guidelines for COVID-19, we are confident that we can begin the year with in-person learning while maintaining the appropriate restrictions to ensure the safety of our community. While there is a transition on the horizon for our students, teachers, and parents we’d like to end this message by saying that as co-principals our goal is to maintain open and clear communication and to create an environment for our children to thrive as young Armenian learners. We look forward to beginning this journey together.

The St. Gregory of Datev Institute will once again hold a virtual Summer Program for youth ages 13-18 from June 28 to July 2, 2021. Sponsored by the Armenian Religious Education Council (AREC), the Program will be an hour long, 11:00 am to noon, Monday to Friday, and it will include two mini-presentations, focusing on the Bible, the teachings and the history of the Armenian Church, along with engaging discussions on faith-related issues. We have opted for the virtual format due to the Covid pandemic.

New lists of war orphans are coming to us through the St. Nerses the Great Organization office in Yerevan. Currently, 71 orphans from fathers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the war in Artsakh are registered in the waiting list of the St. Nerses the Great Organization in Yerevan, along with other 11 orphans with heartbreaking stories. We appeal to the generosity of our fellow Armenians to sponsor one or more of them.

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE ROMANS (7.25-8.11)
Thanks be to God-through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin. Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.
Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

Բայց շնորհակալութիւն կը յայտնեմ Աստուծոյ, մեր Տիրոջ Յիսուս Քրիստոսի միջոցաւ:
Ապա ուրեմն, ես ինքս միտքով Աստուծոյ Օրէնքին կը ծառայեմ, իսկ մարմինով՝ մեղքի օրէնքին:
Եթէ այդպէս է, կը նշանակէ թէ անոնք որ Քրիստոս Յիսուսի միացած են, դատապարտութեան ենթակայ չեն, քանի մարմնաւորապէս չեն ապրիր, այլ՝ հոգեւորապէս: Որովհետեւ Հոգիին Օրէնքը զիս Քրիստոս Յիսուսի միացնելով կենդանացուց եւ ազատեց մեղքի եւ մահուան ենթակայութենէն: Արդարեւ, ինչ որ Օրէնքը չէր կրնար ընել, մարդկային բնութեան տկար ըլլալուն պատճառով, Աստուած իրագործեց՝ աշխարհ ղրկելով իր Որդին, որ մեղքը յաղթահարելու համար մեր մեղանչական բնութիւնը իր վրայ առաւ եւ իր մարմինին մէջ դատապարտեց մեղքը, որպէսզի մենք, որ հոգեւորապէս կ’ապրինք եւ ո՛չ մարմնաւորապէս, կարենանք լրիւ գործադրել Օրէնքին բոլոր պահանջքները: Անոնք որ միայն իրենց մարմնական պահանջքներով կը ղեկավարուին, անոնց մտածելակերպը մարմնական է. մինչդեռ անոնք որ Հոգիին թելադրած ձեւով կ’ապրին, անոնց մտածելակերպը հոգեւոր է: Մարմնականը խորհիլը մահ կը պատճառէ, մինչ հոգեկանը խորհիլը՝ կեանք եւ խաղաղութիւն: Մարմնականին կառչած միտքը Աստուծոյ թշնամի է, որովհետեւ Աստուծոյ օրէնքներուն չի հնազանդիր, ո՛չ ալ կրնայ հնազանիլ: Ահա թէ ինչու, անոնք որ մարմնականին կը հետեւին, Աստուծոյ հաճելի չեն կրնար ըլլալ:
Եթէ իրապէս Աստուծոյ Հոգին ձեր մէջ կը բնակի, կը նշանակէ՝ թէ դուք այլեւս մարմնական ցանկութիւններուն համաձայն չէք ապրիր, այլ՝ Սուրբ Հոգիին կամեցած ձեւով: Իսկ ով որ Քրիստոսի Հոգին չունի, անոր չի պատկանիր: Եթէ Քրիստոս ձեր մէջն է, թէպէտեւ ձեր մարմինները պիտի մեռնին, որովհետեւ մեղանչեցիք, սակայն Սուրբ Հոգին դարձեալ կեանք պիտի տայ ձեզի, որովհետեւ արդարացաք: Այսինքն, եթէ Աստուծոյ Հոգին ձեր մէջ կը բնակի, Աստուած՝ որ Յիսուս Քրիստոսը մեռելներէն յարուցանեց, իր Հոգիին միջոցաւ՝ որ ձեր մէջ կը բնակի, պիտի կենդանացնէ նաեւ ձեր մահկանացու մարմինները:
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MATTHEW (12.38-45)
Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you."
He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here. The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here.
"When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation."
ՅԻՍՈՒՍ ՔՐԻՍՏՈՍԻ ԱՒԵՏԱՐԱՆԸ ԸՍՏ ՄԱՏԹԷՈՍԻ (12.38-45)
Այն ատեն Օրէնքի ուսուցիչներէն եւ Փարիսեցիներէն ոմանք ըսին Յիսուսի.
– Վարդապե՛տ, կ’ուզենք որ հրաշք մը գործես եւ տեսնենք:
Յիսուս անոնց պատասխանեց.
– Աստուծոյ անհաւատարիմ եւ չար սերունդ, նշան մը կ’ուզէք, բայց Յովնան մարգարէին նշանէն զատ ուրիշ նշան պիտի չտրուի ձեզի: Ինչպէս Յովնան երեք օր ցերեկ ու գիշեր կէտ ձուկի փորին մէջ մնաց, նոյնպէս ալ Մարդու Որդին երեք օր, ցերեկ ու գիշեր, պիտի մնայ երկրի ընդերքին մէջ: Դատաստանի օրը Նինուէացիները ձեզի դէմ պիտի ելլեն եւ դատապարտեն ձեզ, որովհետեւ անոնք Յովնանի քարոզութեամբ զղջացին իրենց մեղքերուն համար: Եւ ահա, Յովնանէն աւելի մեծ մէկը կայ հոս: Դարձեալ, Դատաստանի օրը Հարաւի թագուհին պիտի ելլէ եւ դատապարտէ ձեզ, որովհետեւ անիկա իր հեռաւոր երկրէն եկաւ Սողոմոնի իմաստուն ուսուցումները լսելու հա-մար: Եւ ահա, Սողոմոնէն աւելի մեծ մէկը կայ հոս:
– Երբ չար ոգին դուրս կ’ելլէ մարդու մը մէջէն, կ’երթայ եւ անջրդի վայրեր կը շրջի՝ հանգիստ տեղ մը գտնելու համար: Եւ երբ չի գտներ, ինքնիրեն կ’ըսէ. «Ելլեմ երթամ իմ տունս, ուրկէ ելայ»: Ուստի կը վերադառնայ իր նախկին տունը եւ զայն կը գտնէ պարապ, մաքուր եւ յարդարուած: Ապա կ’երթայ եւ կը բերէ իրմէ աւելի չար եօթը այլ ոգիներ, որոնց հետ ներս մտնելով՝ կը բնակի հոն, որով այդ մարդուն վերջը իր նախկին վիճակէն աւելի գէշ կ’ըլլայ: Գիտցէ՛ք, որ նոյնը պիտի պատահի նաեւ այս չար սերունդին:

DISCOVERY OF THE RELICS OF ST. GREGORY THE ILLUMINATOR
This Saturday (June 19) the Armenian Church observes one of the three feast days dedicated to St. Gregory the Illuminator (Krikor Lousavorich): the discovery of his relics. St. Gregory is considered to be the “Apostle of Armenia,” and the patron saint of the Armenian Church. He preached throughout Armenia, built churches, including the great cathedral in Etchmiadzin, established the first canon laws, wrote many prayers, and organized the liturgical services.
After years of evangelizing, St. Gregory sought solitude and an ascetic life. He retired to a cave at Mount Sepouh where he died in solitude. Shepherds found his body and without realizing his identity they buried him under a pile of stones. Later a hermit, known as Garnik of Basen, who was a disciple of Gregory, saw a vision and went to Mount Sepouh and found the burial site. He took the saint’s remains to the village of Tordan for burial where King Drtad was buried.
Relics from the right hand of St. Gregory, encased in a golden arm, are at the Holy Mother See of Etchmiadzin and the Holy See of Cilicia. Continuing long established traditions, the Catholicoi mix the new Muron (holy oil) with the old Muron with the golden arm of St. Gregory.
ST. DANIEL THE PROPHET AND COMPANIONS SHEDRACH, MESHACH, AND ABEDNEGO
This Tuesday (June 22) the Armenian Church commemorates Daniel the Prophet and his companions. Daniel and his youthful companions Shadrach (Setrak), Meshach (Misak), and Abednego (Apetnakov), found favor with the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar after their captivity. When the king gave orders for a large statue of himself to be worshipped like a god, Daniel and the three youths refused. Shadrack, Meshach, and Abednego were put into a large furnace. The flames shot out of the furnace and attacked those standing nearby, but the three boys walked in the flames without harm. Seeing this, the king ordered their release from the furnace. - Mrs. HERIKNAZ BAZIKIAN, passed on Monday, June 7, 2021. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family. May she rest in peace.
