NEW YEAR'S EVE

Every year on December 31st, people around the world celebrate New Year's Eve, the last day of the year. It’s a day to say “goodbye” to the old and “hello” to the new.

Also known as Old Year's Day or Saint Sylvester's Day, New Year’s Eve is one of the most exciting holidays of the year. Some countries, such as the Philippines and Latvia, celebrate New Year’s Eve as a public holiday. In Japan, it’s a government holiday. In other countries, many businesses let their employees off of work early so that they can partake in the many festivities.

There are many reasons this day is one of the biggest nights of the year. Not just because it’s a time of big parties and celebrations all around the world. New Year’s Eve can be a significant turning point in your life. It’s a time to reflect on the past year and all of the lessons you have learned. It can be a time you decide to start making better choices. If you have had a rough year, New Year’s Eve offers a feeling of relief. You can be thankful that the year is finally over

  • New Year’s is also a time to forgive past mistakes and form new habits. Many people make New Year’s resolutions. Although, only 8% of people actually accomplish them. Instead of making resolutions that you’re not going to keep anyway, it’s better to set three or four goals. Breaking down goals into actionable steps, and reviewing your progress daily helps to keep them. It’s also a good idea to find a friend or mentor that can hold you accountable

LA Fire Marshal offers New Year fireworks safety tips

 By Teiko Foxx

If you plan to start the New Year with a bang, the State Fire Marshal’s Office wants to remind you of some simple tips regarding fireworks safety.

Spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says the first thing you should do is to make sure there are no fireworks restrictions in your parish.

“Make sure wherever it is you are planning to pop fireworks that it’s legal to do so. There are different roles, different laws in different parts of our state,” she said.

Rodrigue says it’s best to attend a public display where professionals are handling the pyrotechnics.

“Make sure wherever you’re setting up your fireworks to be set off that it is at least 200 feet away from structures, people who are watching, vehicles, any type of environment or objects that are easily set ablaze,” she said.

Rodrigue suggests having a water source nearby in case of any type of emergency or fire. Also, do not pop fireworks when impaired because it slows your reaction time. She reminds adults to never give children fireworks, even sparklers.

“Don’t allow children to play or use fireworks even with a parent present at all. It’s best to give them some alternative options like glow sticks or glow little items like necklaces and bracelets,” said Rodrigue.

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The holidays have arrived in Greater New Orleans, and local law enforcement agencies want to make sure residents get home safely after festive celebrations.

While making your holiday plans, officials with the St. Tammany Parish and St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s offices are reminding residents of their efforts to curb impaired driving throughout the season.

Holiday travel at MSY going smoothly

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith said his office is participating in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign and is increasing patrols to “target impaired drivers.”

Smith said the STPSO is also offering free rides home to people in St. Tammany Parish who cannot get a sober ride home.

“If you know you’re going to be drinking alcohol, have a plan. Get a designated driver, call a cab or arrange for a lift from a rideshare company. If you have exhausted all resources and cannot find a way to get home, call the STPSO. We will provide you a safe ride home,” Smith said.

STPSO officials said those who don’t live in the parish can still contact deputies who will work with them to find a safe way to get home.

St. Tammany Parish residents looking to use the service can call (985)-898-2338 through New Year’s Day.

St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne said the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office is also offering parish residents free rides home this holiday season.

Champagne said anyone who consumed alcohol and needs a safe ride home in St. Charles Parish can call (985)-783-6807 through New Year’s Day.

The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office is also bringing back its “Holiday Ride Home” program, where parish residents can call the sheriff’s office at (504)-271-2501 for a free, no questions asked ride home through Jan. 2.

Sunday is the final day of the year, a New Year’s Eve when each of the city’s teams play a game that will help define the character of both franchises even more.

One team that struggles starting games (the Saints) and another that struggles finishing games (the Pelicans) will both try to put it all together for four quarters and get a win.

Two games 480 miles apart, both putting New Orleans teams in what should be a revenge-seeking state of mind.

The Saints travel to Florida to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at noon, while the Pelicans will be home in the Smoothie King Center playing the Los Angeles Lakers at 6.

For the Saints, their postseason hopes are on the line.

For the Pelicans, their competitiveness is on the line.

For both teams, it’s a chance to erase a pair of embarrassing losses from earlier in the season.

The Saints lost to the Buccaneers 26-9 in October, the most lopsided loss in the Dennis Allen era. It was the Saints’ third straight loss to the Buccaneers, the first time the Saints have ever lost to their NFC South foes that many consecutive times.

The Pelicans, meanwhile, look to avenge a 133-89 beatdown to the Lakers in Las Vegas in the semifinals of the NBA’s inaugural In-Season Tournament. That 44-point loss is the worst of the Willie Green era.

“Just a lack of competitive spirit from our group," Green said after that nationally televised debacle. "And that’s not indicative of who we’ve been and who we are.”

Sunday, Green’s Pelicans can prove that night in Vegas was a fluke and they are indeed able to stay on the floor with the LeBron James-led Lakers.

A win won’t make or break the Pelicans’ season, but beating a team that dominated them so handily less than a month ago would be the perfect way to cap off their 2023. It should be an electric atmosphere in the Smoothie King Center, and not just because New Orleans legends Juvenile and Mannie Fresh will be performing at halftime.

For the Saints, the at Raymond James Stadium very well could make or break their season. If the Saints win, their slim playoff hopes remain alive. If they don’t, they will be assured of missing the postseason for a third straight year.

To win the division title, the Saints need to beat the Bucs and then beat the rival Atlanta Falcons in the final week of the season. Even if they do that, they will still need some help to win the NFC South: The Carolina Panthers, one of the worst teams in the league, must upset the Buccaneers in the finale.

The Saints (7-8) only have themselves to blame for a season filled with so much optimism that has come down to them needing help to make the playoffs.

It’s been a season filled with disappointments, one where they’ve beaten a lot of bad teams and lost to a lot of good ones.

“We are what we’ve earned,” said Saints quarterback Derek Carr. “The whole year has been tough. The one thing our guys have shown is they keep fighting.”

Sunday marks the 66th time the Saints and Pelicans have played on the same day. Only 14 times have they both won on the same day. Can they make it 15 on a day when both teams are playing meaningful games? It would be a heckuva way to close out 202

Fireworks will light up the sky at the stroke of midnight Sunday night when the Crescent City Countdown Club--in association with New Orleans and Company, the Mayor's Office of Cultural Economy, and the New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund--hosts the annual NOLA New Year's Eve Fireworks Show in the French Quarter. The club will count down the final seconds of 2023 by dropping their giant fleur-de-lis atop Jax Brewery. Once the fleur-de-lis completes its descent and 2023 gives way to 2024, a world-class pyrotechnics show will illuminate the New Orleans sky.

The Berger and Tiller Families, French Quarter Festivals, Inc., and J&M Displays are also assisting with the production of the fleur-de-lis drop and fireworks display.

If you're going to be out of town or if you can't make it to the French Quarter to take part in the festivities, you can watch them live at wwl.com or on the WWL Radio Facebook page.

The fleur-de-lis drop and fireworks show are the first in several New Year's festivities in New Orleans. The Allstate Sugar Bowl Parade will roll through the French Quarter on New Year's Eve at 2:30 p.m. Then on New Year's Day, the 90th Annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Football Classic featuring Texas and Washington will kickoff at 7:45 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

NATIONAL CHAMPAGNE DAY

National Champagne Day recognizes the wine that puts the pop in every New Year's Eve celebration.

Genuine champagne only comes from France's Champagne region. French law protects where and how it is made. With some exceptions, only Champagne made according to set specifications and within the French region may label their wines using the term "Champagne." Other foods and beverages fall under this type of protection in France and other parts of the world.

Champagne, France, is located northeast of Paris and provides the ideal temperature and soil to produce the grapes required for Champagne. French law allows only eight varieties of grapes for the production of Champagne in the Champagne region. Primarily, the three grapes used to create Champagne are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.

Unlike other wines, Champagne ferments in the bottle allowing the vintner to trap the CO2 in the bottle. The bubbles give Champagne its effervescence.

While Champagne can be spendy, if you are looking for a little pop on New Year's Eve, other varieties of sparkling wine are available from Italy, California, and even the South of France. They offer a sparkle that won't put a fizzle in your pocketbook. Then again, some New Years mean an opportunity for splurging and celebrating no matter the expense

The long-ago restaurants of West End!

The restaurants of West End offered some of the best seafood available in the New Orleans area. Beginning as early as the mid-1800s, with the arrival of Captain Bruning and his iconic Bruning's Seafood Restaurant, West End became synonymous with delicious seafood and New Orleans cuisine. Names like Fitzgerald's, Bruning's, Swanson's, Papa Rosselli's, Maggie and Smitty's Fontana's, and Kirsch's conjure many memories for seasoned New Orleanians who frequented these establishments. By the 1960s, West End's "restaurant row" was fully developed into one of the favorite spots for seafood and specialty food. The aerial photograph below indicates the locations of the various restaurants that were known over the years. West End was directly adjacent to the east end of Jefferson Parish, so the over-water portions of those buildings along West End Park were actually in Jefferson Parish. The area to the lower portion of the photo was known as Bucktown, a fishing village that bordered the lake and the 17th. Street Outfall Canal. By placing the restaurants and bars in Jefferson Parish, yet having access only through Orleans Parish, some of the businesses were able to get away with hosting gambling and other vices that were normally illegal in the city. City Park Prepares for Enhanced Celebration in the Oaks

Expanded holiday festival to include Driving Tour, amusement-park rides and reimagined Walking Tour

New Orleans City Park’s Celebration in the Oaks, one of the most-spectacular holiday lights festivals in the country, has fascinated guests for generations. The month-long fundraiser attracts over 135,000 visitors each year who come to see City Park’s famous live oak trees swathed in over a million twinkling lights and discover hundreds of breathtaking displays throughout the Park. This year, THE New Orleans holiday tradition is taking it to another level.

“With the Driving Tour and Walking Tour, this will be the biggest footprint Celebration in the Oaks has had since Hurricane Katrina,” said Cara Lambright, City Park Conservancy CEO. “As our largest annual fundraiser, we can’t wait to share this exciting celebration with our community.”

Boasting more light displays, new attractions and the return of the Botanical Garden Walking Tour, the 2022 Celebration will offer a variety of options, and price points, for guests to choose from.

Highlights this year include:

2.25-mile Driving Tour with enhanced displays

Walking Tour with Botanical Garden access and Carousel Gardens Amusement Park rides included

Multiple dedicated Bike Nights

Botanical Garden Dripping Tree, Poinsettia Tree, Historic Train Garden and “Cajun Night Before Christmas”

Carousel Gardens Train, Christmas Tree, Mr. Bingle and free marshmallows and hot chocolate

Holiday-themed Storyland

Iconic LED dinosaurs, flamingos and pirate ship

New exhibits such Toy Land, a 12-foot Dandelion Meadow Display and Winter Wonderland

“We heard the call of the community and challenged ourselves to step it up,” said Julie LaCour, Director of CITO/Special Events. “We know how important this event is to visitors, and we feel confident this year’s final product will make memories for folks that will last a lifetime.”

City Park Conservancy’s annual operating budget is largely reliant on self-generated activities, often weather dependent, and Celebration in the Oaks plays a key role in funding the Park’s continued maintenance and beauty each year, providing nearly 10% of the Park’s annual budget. The public’s investment and attendance at Celebration in the Oaks supports City Park’s success going forward.

130 Roosevelt Way New Orleans, LA, United States, Louisiana 70112

5PM

During the Christmas season, almost every local has made their way through the cold streets of downtown New Orleans to see the lobby of the romantic Roosevelt Hotel.

Faux tree stems wrapped in glimmering white lights stand tall as they hover over guests and nearly touch the ceiling chandeliers. Neighboring the branches are snow-white Christmas trees covered in red ribbons and ornaments. Both decors line the lobby in a perfect, picturesque pattern.

Hence, it isn't hard to understand why Travel and Leisure named the Roosevelt one of the 15 most festive hotels in the U.S. during the holiday season.

“Our hotel guests, New Orleanians and tourists from all over the world come to The Roosevelt at this time of year because it is truly the brightest, most brilliant place to bring out the holiday spirit,” Tod Chambers, general manager of the Roosevelt, said in a news release.

This year, the Roosevelt is bringing back its beloved Christmas tradition on Nov. 28, unveiling 1,600 feet of garland and 4,000 glass ornaments, the hotel announced Wednesday morning.

New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President and General Manager Mickey Loomis will be there to help switch on the ceremonial lighting of over 112,000 lights, the Roosevelt said in a news release.

The hotel will also be offering various options for holiday dining experiences and drink options at the Sazerac Bar and Teddy's Café.

The Sazerac Bar is bringing back their annual holiday drinks, including the Christmas Cookie — a sweet, vodka-based mixed drink — and the Candy Cane, a sugar drink featuring Rumple Minze.

"Erté and the Era of Art Deco" will remain open through Jan. 3, 2024.

Often called "the father of Art Deco," Romain de Tirtoff, known as Erté, was the central figure of the art and design evolution that emerged during the 1920s. The look featured stylized forms, geometric patterns, vibrant colors and sleek lines. Its influence flooded the world of art, fashion, architecture, furniture design, serviceware and more.

The Rau exhibit includes a large collection of the artist's original gouache paintings, used to create designs for fashion shows, clubs and stage performances.

City of New Orleans Encourages Residents to Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to Rebuild Wetlands

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 25 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while preventing them from being placed in landfills. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.

"Every year, our Christmas trees bring light and happiness into our homes, but their significance goes far beyond spreading holiday joy," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "Recycling and placing these trees along our eroding coastline to help rebuild our wetlands will assist in the effort to protect our great city and state for generations to come. This robust tree recycling program is another example of how New Orleans will continue to lead in combatting the global climate crisis while promoting innovative opportunities to create a better, greener and more vibrant community. So far, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. Thank you to our residents who continue to donate their Christmas trees year after year to enhance our coastline restoration efforts."

The program is coordinated by the City's Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Louisiana National Guard.

“We’re bringing attention to the Christmas Tree Recycling Program today because Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are popular days for New Orleanians to buy and decorate live Christmas trees,” said Director of Economic Development Jeff Schwartz. “The City can only accept trees without tinsel and flocking, and we ask residents to please consider this while decorating your tree.”

“While we are making great progress, protecting our natural resources remains more important than ever for New Orleans,” said ORS Deputy Chief Resilience Officer Greg Nichols. "The Christmas Tree Recycling Program is a great way for residents to get involved in the fight to restore our coast.”

Residents are encouraged to place their trees curbside for collection by Department of Sanitation contractors from Jan. 8 - 12, 2024. Trees cannot be flocked, and all ornamentation must be removed before placing them on the curb.  Once they are collected, they will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter and dropped in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The City’s goal is to collect 10,000 trees this year.

“The annual Christmas Tree Drop represents a long-standing partnership between the Louisiana National Guard and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service," said Louisiana National Guard, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gabriel Ruiz. "It benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment, while also providing valuable training hours for our pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment."

“I’d like to thank the residents of New Orleans for sharing their Christmas trees with us each year and making their contribution to coastal restoration," said USFWS Refuge Manager Shelley Stiaes. "Their tradition of donating Christmas trees is helping to rebuild our coastline and build habitat for wildlife."

Superdome doors are scheduled to open at 5:30 p.m. for the highly anticipated showdown between No. 2 Washington and No. 3 Texas. The winner of this year's game, the 90th annual Sugar Bowl Classic, will advance to the College Football Playoff Championship on Monday, January 8, in Houston. The other Playoff Semifinal pits No. 1 Michigan against No. 4 Alabama and will be played at the Rose Bowl, which kicks off at 3:30 p.m. (Central), also on ESPN.

Washington (13-0, 9-0 Pac-12) advanced to the College Football Playoff after a thrilling 34-31 victory over No. 5 Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship game on Dec. 1. Texas (12-1, 8-1 Big 12) also earned its conference championship with an impressive 49-21 win over No. 18 Oklahoma State in the Big 12 title game on Dec. 2. The Huskies and the Longhorns are the 94th and 95th conference champions to play in the Sugar Bowl in its 90-year history.

Washington will be the first Pac-12 team to play in the Sugar Bowl while schools that are currently in the Big 12 have made 25 Sugar Bowl appearances with an all-time mark of 15-10.

NEW ORLEANS – Washington, from the Pac-12 Conference, and Texas, from the Big-12 Conference, will be featured in the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Monday, January 1, 2024, in the Caesars Superdome. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7:45 p.m. (Central) and will be televised by ESPN.

While the game is officially sold out, the Sugar Bowl Committee encourages fans still looking to purchase tickets to visit Ticketmaster as the official verified resale platform of the 2024 Playoff Semifinal at the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

The Allstate Sugar Bowl will be doubling as a College Football Playoff (CFP) Semifinal for the fourth time since the start of the four-team college football postseason format which was established for the 2014 season. The three previous Playoff Semifinals combined for nearly 70 million worldwide viewers on ESPN's platforms.

"It's a wonderful opportunity for the Sugar Bowl to host two of the top college football teams in the country for a Playoff Semifinal," said Richard Briede, the President of the Sugar Bowl Committee. "And we're very excited as Washington and Texas are outstanding universities who have proven themselves to have tremendous football programs with strong followings of diehard fans. The energy in New Orleans for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day is going to be amazing."

This season will mark the final year of the current four-team format for the CFP. Starting with the 2024 regular season, the CFP will expand to a 12-team playoff. The Allstate Sugar Bowl will host New Year's Day Playoff Quarterfinals following both the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

"The Allstate Sugar Bowl has hosted the best in college football for our first 89 years," said Jeff Hundley, the chief executive officer of the Allstate Sugar Bowl. "Washington and Texas will ensure that the 90th annual Sugar Bowl continues that long run of excellence. We can't wait to welcome all the passionate Husky and Longhorn fans who pack the Superdome as well as the fans around the world who will watch this important match-up on ESPN."

Washington (13-0, 9-0 Pac-12) was ranked No. 3 by the College Football Playoff (CFP) Selection Committee in last week's CFP Rankings and it moved up one spot to No. 2 following its 34-31 victory over No. 5 Oregon in Friday's Pac-12 Championship game. After being ranked No. 7 in last week's CFP Rankings, Texas (12-1, 8-1 Big 12) moved up to No. 3 in today's rankings after its impressive 49-21 win over No. 18 Oklahoma State in Saturday's Big 12 Championship game.

Washington, as the higher seed, will be the home team and will occupy the home bench on the west sideline of the Caesars Superdome while Texas will occupy the visitor bench on the east sideline.

This year's Sugar Bowl will be a rematch of last year's Alamo Bowl – Washington posted a 27-20 victory over Texas in that game on Dec. 29, 2022. The two teams have met four other times with the Longhorns holding a 3-2 edge in the series. The first two meetings were a Texas sweep of a home-and-home series (35-21 in Austin on Oct. 5, 1974, and 28-10 in Seattle on Sept. 20, 1975). The other meetings also came in bowls with Washington winning 14-7 in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 22, 1979, and Texas winning 47-43 in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 28, 2001.

Washington will be the first Pac-12 team to play in the Sugar Bowl while schools that are currently in the Big 12 have made 25 Sugar Bowl appearances with an all-time mark of 15-10 (.600). Washington and Texas are the 94th and 95th conference champions to play in the Sugar Bowl in its 90-year history.

The Huskies will be making their second appearance in the CFP – they lost to Alabama in a Playoff Semifinal following the 2016 season, the third year of the CFP. The Longhorns are making their CFP debut this year.

While Washington is making its Sugar Bowl debut, becoming the 52nd school to participate in the game, Texas will be making its fifth appearance in the Sugar Bowl. The Longhorns have an all-time mark of 2-2 in the Sugar Bowl with wins in their first (Jan. 1, 1948, 27-7 over Alabama) and last appearances (Jan. 1, 2021, 28-21 over Georgia).

This year marked the most wins (13) in Washington football's 107-year history. The Huskies have posted 15 10-win seasons. Texas, meanwhile, has recorded 25 seasons with 10 or more victories. The Longhorns' victory record is also 13, set in its 2005 and 2009 BCS Championship seasons.

Washington will be making its 40th overall bowl appearance with an all-time record of 19-19-1. This will be the 59th bowl appearance for Texas; it has an all-time bowl mark of 31-25-2.

Both coaches, Kalen DeBoer from Washington and Steve Sarkisian for Texas, will be making their Sugar Bowl debuts as head coaches – they will become the 103rd and 104th coaches to lead teams into the Sugar Bowl.

Washington will be playing its first game in the Superdome and in New Orleans as well as just its fourth game overall in the state of Louisiana. The Huskies defeated Tulane in Shreveport's Independence Bowl on Dec. 19, 1987, and lost a pair of games to LSU in Baton Rouge (1983 and 2012). Texas will be making its 18th trip to Louisiana – the Longhorns have a 10-6-1 record in the Pelican State with a 7-0-1 record in New Orleans against Tulane, a 1-4 mark against LSU in Baton Rouge and a 2-2 Sugar Bowl record. The Horns are 2-1 all-time in the Superdome (a win over Georgia and a loss to Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl and a 2002 win over Tulane).

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.

Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.

Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.

The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.

One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”

Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

Allison 'Tootie' Montana, famed Mardi Gras Indian, to be honored in New Orleans

The Black Catholic culture-bearer helmed the Black Masking tradition for more than 50 years until his death in 2005 at the age of 82.

NATE TINNER-WILLIAMS

Upcoming celebrations in New Orleans will honor Big Chief Allison “Tootie” Montana, a famed Mardi Gras Indian known for transforming and pacifying the tradition after its extended violent period during the mid-20th century.

The events will kick off on Thursday, Jan. 4, with a presentation on the tradition, also known as Black Masking Indians, by Tootie’s son Darryl Montana and Dianne “Gumbo Marie” Honore' at the New Orleans Jazz Museum for the Jazz Education Network annual conference.

On Jan. 6, a blessing ceremony will take place at the late culture-bearer’s memorial statue in Louis Armstrong Park in the Tremé neighborhood at 2pm CT. The date marks Tootie Montana Day in the City of New Orleans, which created the annual civic celebration in 2012.

It is also the Feast of the Epiphany—following Twelfth Night in the Crescent City, which kicks off the region’s well-known Carnival season, engendering weeks of parades and other celebrations featuring the cultural community Montana helped revitalize.

“Each year we strive to keep his legacy, the legacy of the Black Masking tradition across the city and the Backatown neighborhood history at the forefront through education, community enrichment and involvement, celebration and preservation,” the annual Montana Day organizers said in a statement.

On Dec. 7, the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) will screen the 1976 short documentary film “Black Indians of New Orleans” at 1pm, showcasing the late Dr. Maurice Martinez’s in-depth look at the history of the art form.

Dating back to at least the mid-19th century, the longstanding African-American communal tradition involves months of costume creation among the city’s dozens of tribes, leading up to their carnival season debut each year. The confluence of African and Native American cultures is thought to have arisen from early interactions between the two oppressed communities in Louisiana around the turn of the 18th century.

A second documentary, “Testimony of a Big Chief,” created in the 1990s by Will Horton, was originally scheduled to screen alongside “Black Indians of New Orleans” at NOMA, following nearly two decades of obscurity following its presumed loss during Hurricane Katrina. It was rediscovered in 2022 and screened at Loyola University New Orleans in early December of this year.

Unforeseen circumstances have resulted in the reduction of the NOMA show to one screening only, that of Dr. Martinez’s film.

Montana, a Black Catholic who was for more than a half-century embedded in the tradition as leader of the Yellow Pocahontas Tribe, features in both films as the “chief of chiefs” across tribes, helping to unify and popularize Black Masking in its modern form.

His influence helped bring about the characteristic bold colors and loud flourishes now ubiquitous among the various tribal suits. This aspect of the Mardi Gras Indians quickly overtook the previously violent nature of the parades and appearances, as healthy competition developed over who could produce the most elaborate costumes in time for the big reveal—in modern times, “Super Sunday,” the Sunday closest to the Feast of St. Joseph in March.

While giving a speech to the New Orleans City Council in 2005, Montana died of a heart attack, after which he was honored throughout the city by his fellow Masking Indians and supporters, who have continued to preserve his legacy.

They will be among those present at his commemorations this January, the latter two of which are open to the public. No advance registration is required but tickets can be reserved for NOMA, which includes admission to the film screening. More information can be found on the museum website.

King Cake Hub and Zony Mash will host the second annual King Cake Monarch Pageant which will be part of our Countdown to Carnival Party and held in the tap room at 3940 Thalia Street. The party will be on Friday, January 5, 2024 from 9pm until midnight when our reigning Monarch Katrina Waters will pass the crown to the 2024 King Cake Monarch who will cut and share the first slices of king cake with all their royal subjects. The pageant will be emceed by our long time friends Prof. Carl Nivale and Grand Marshal Marty Graw and will also feature appearances by several dance krewes including El Lucha Krewe, Sassyracs and Voulez Krewe.  DJ Liz will be onstage playing Carnival and New Orleans music to help get us all in the mood for that first slice of king cake and all the fun that is Carnival!

The King Cake Monarch will also be invited back to celebrate the opening of the King Cake Hub at 1464 S. Broad. The doors open and the party starts again welcome customers for the first day of the King Cake Hub, Josh Paxton will be playing Carnival favorites in the beer garden as well as HEY Coffee Co selling coffee and Paw Paws Donuts serving their amazing cream filled donuts.

This will be King Cake Hub’s sixth year selling a wide assortment of the best king cakes you have ever and never tasted and will include a variety of more than 70 cakes from Bittersweet, Breads on Oak, Brennan’s, Bywater Bakery, Caluda’s, Cannata’s, Caywood and Randazzo Bakery, District, Hi Do Bakery, Gracious, Joe Gambino’s Bakery, NOCCA, Sugar Love, Nolita, Mad Matter Bakery, Marguerite’s King Cakes, La Vie En Rose and more as well as a number of king cake related sweets and other merchandise.

Many purists blame people eating king cake out of season for all kinds of calamities from hurricanes to dreary Saints seasons. While our extensive research can’t substantiate those claims we can conclusively say that king cake causes maximum joy when shared during the festivities of the Carnival season. So much so that we can’t wait a minute longer that necessary to start eating and sharing with all our fans.

King Cake Hub will be open daily from 8:30am until 6:00pm daily beginning January 6 through Lundi Gras. Delivery will be available through D’livery and is scheduled to start the week of 1/8. King Cake Hub will only be operating out of the Zony Mash location to ensure our loyal customers get that wonderful overwhelming experience that is King Cake Hub! Stay tuned for more info via King Cake Hub’s social media sites on Facebook and Instagram.

Welcoming the new marching krewe, Krewe Mosaïque! They have their first parade on January 13th, from Armstrong Park to Ursuline Convent. Your favorite Professor and Grand Marshal Marty Graw look forward to being there!

#Carnival2024 #MardiGras2024 #OurCarnivalHeritage #krewemosaique

https://www.axios.com/.../new-krewe-mardi-gras-parade...

A new walking krewe will debut for Mardi Gras 2024, marching through the French Quarter on Jan. 13.

Why it matters: The event fills in an otherwise parade-free weekend during the weekslong celebration of Carnival in New Orleans.

What's happening: Krewe Mosaïque will march for 12 blocks from Armstrong Park to the Ursuline Convent for the first time.

  • This year's krewe will max out at 200 members, and organizers are putting an emphasis on DIY elements, handmade throws and cultural or historical relevance to the city.
  • The idea stems from the krewe's founding members preference for DIY costuming and contraption-building.

What she's saying: "Everything is bright and colorful and very unique unto themselves, but when we come together, it's this beautiful experience, like a mosaic," says Krewe Mosaïque founder Terese Aiello.
