NATIONAL PHARMACIST DAY

National Pharmacist Day on January 12th annually recognizes and honors all pharmacists across the nation.

The role of pharmacists has shifted over the years. Where once they served as the classical โ€œlick, stick and pourโ€ dispensary, they now serve as an integrated member of the health care team. Pharmacists are often directly involved in patient care and play a vital role in a patient's recovery.

Historically, pharmacists primarily checked and distributed drugs to doctors for patient prescribed medication. In modern times, pharmacists advise patients and health care providers on the selection, dosages, interactions, and side effects of prescriptions. Additionally, their role includes being a learned intermediary between a prescriber and a patient. By monitoring the health and progress of patients, pharmacists can then ensure the safe and effective use of medication.

Pharmacists work long hours, usually standing the entire time. Along with dispensing pills and providing advice on medications, pharmacists also administer immunizations. Pharmacists who conduct research discover and test new medications, too.

  • Do you wonder how Agatha Christie came to know so much about poisons for her murder mysteries? She was once a pharmacy dispenser during World War I.
  • Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, and Ginger Ale were all invented by pharmacists
  • Before running for President of the United States, Hubert Humphrey earned his pharmacy license and worked in his father's pharmacy.
  • William Procter, Jr., (May 3, 1817 - February 10, 1874) dedicated his career to the science of pharmacy. He wrote the first textbook on pharmacy for students in the United States and advocated for the founding of the American Pharmaceutical Association. His dedication earned him the name Father of Pharmacy.

What does "farrago" mean

Clarity

Orderliness

Jumble

Simplicity

farrago

/fษ™หˆrษ‘หษกoสŠ/

Definition: A confused mixture; a hodgepodge or jumble of various elements.

Origin: Derived from the Latin word "farrago," meaning "mixed grain" or "mash," which combines "far" (grain) and "ago" (to drive or lead).

Example: The book was a farrago of genres, blending science fiction, romance, and mystery into a single narrative.

The term "farrago" aptly describes a jumble, as it conveys the idea of a chaotic mixture or assortment of different elements. Often used to refer to a collection that lacks cohesion, "farrago" captures the essence of disorganization. When one encounters a farrago, they might find it challenging to discern a clear theme or purpose, much like a jumble that presents a haphazard arrangement of items. This quality of chaotic variety makes "farrago" a fitting word for anything that seems to be a disordered blend, whether in literature, conversation, or even physical objects.

Regift Your Christmas Trees to the Wetlands: Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program!

NEW ORLEANS โ€“ The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands.โ€ฏFor over 26 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while also preventing them from being placed in landfills. Thanks to residents who participate in the program each year, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.

This year, the City added expanded dates and several new drop-off sites on the East Bank and West Bank to make it easier for residents to recycle their trees. Hereโ€™s when and how to participate:

City of New Orleans Extends Opportunities to Recycle Christmas Trees Through Friday, January 17

NEW ORLEANS โ€“ The City of New Orleans today announce the extension of Christmas tree collections. Residents are encouraged to call 3-1-1 to request a Christmas tree pickup through Friday, Jan. 17 if their tree was not collected this week. Requests can also be made by visiting https://nola311.org/.

After the 3-1-1 request is made, residents should immediately place their tree on the curb in a position that is easy for the contractor to retrieve it. Residents should also leave the trees in place until they are removed, as the contractorโ€™s route may vary.

Trees cannot be flocked or have remnants of tinsel. Lighting and all ornamentation must be removed before recycling pick up. Residents should also try to remove plastic bases from their trees. However, wooden bases are acceptable.

The program is coordinated by the City of New Orleans Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and the Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Louisiana Army National Guard (LANG).

The trees will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter to be dropped off in the spring in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The project benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment while also providing valuable training hours for pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment.

To learn more about this initiative, visit nola.gov/ChristmasTreeRecycling.

The Christmas season has come to a close, and you might be wondering what to do with your tree.

Jefferson Parish officials are reminding residents of its Christmas tree recycling program as residents get ready to ring in the new year.

According to the parish, residents in unincorporated Jefferson Parish and the Town of Jean Lafitte can bring real Christmas trees with no lights, garland, tinsel, ornaments, tree stands or plastic bags to 400 David Drive or 6440 Lapalco Blvd. from Jan. 4 through Jan. 14.

Flocked, painted and artificial trees will not be collected.

Parish officials said the recycled trees will be used to build wave-dampening fences to reduce coastal erosion in the Barataria Basin.

JANUARY 12, 2025

New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center

Fan Expo New Orleans features โ€˜Back to the Futureโ€™ panels, comics and cosplay Jan. 10-12

Claudia Wellsโ€™ first film role was in โ€œBack to the Futureโ€ as Jennifer Parker, Marty McFlyโ€™s patient, encouraging girlfriend. Wells had been acting on television for several years before the 1985 film, and she landed the role as Jennifer after a long audition in front of writer Bob Gale, director Robert Zemeckis and producers Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy.

Filming โ€œBack to the Futureโ€ was a great experience, Wells says. But after her mother was diagnosed with cancer, Wells decided to retire from acting and passed on returning for โ€œBack to the Future Part IIโ€ in 1989. Actor Elisabeth Shue was cast as Jennifer for the seriesโ€™ second and third films.

Wells went on to open a menโ€™s clothing store, and her shop, Armani Wells, recently marked its 34th anniversary. As for โ€œBack to the Future,โ€ it was a fun moment that she left in the past โ€” until around 2012 when she was invited to attend a reunion at a comic con in Burbank, California.

โ€œโ€˜Back to the Futureโ€™ had started to become such a big deal, and I would get fans coming in [to the store] from all over the world,โ€ Wells says. โ€œYouโ€™d see people with a camera around their neck. I had people from the Netherlands and Australia and Japan and everywhere.โ€

Over the last decade, Wells has frequently participated in โ€œBack to the Futureโ€ panels at fan conventions around the world. Sheโ€™ll next be at Fan Expo New Orleans this weekend for a panel and to sign autographs and take photos.

There are a number of events celebrating the 40th anniversary of โ€œBack to the Futureโ€ at this yearโ€™s Fan Expo New Orleans, which takes place Friday, Jan. 10, through Sunday, Jan. 12, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. The annual fan convention celebrates all things comics, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, anime and gaming, and will feature celebrity meet-and-greets, panels, workshops, cosplay competitions, comic book sales and artists displaying their works.

Michael J. Fox โ€” who has done fewer public appearances in the last decade due to living with Parkinsonโ€™s disease โ€” and Christopher Lloyd are among the 11 Fan Expo guests who took part in โ€œBack to the Future.โ€ Theyโ€™ll join actors Lea Thompson and Tom Wilson and musician Huey Lewis on Friday, Jan. 10, for a panel sharing stories and answering questions about the film. Comics writer Victor Dandridge will moderate the panel.

Wells will take part in a panel on Sunday, Jan. 12, with more members of the filmโ€™s cast, including Charlie Croughwell, James Tolkan, Harry Waters Jr., Frances Lee McCain and Jeffrey Weissman.

Fan Expo will screen โ€œBack to the Futureโ€ on Sunday, and there will be an Enchantment Under the Sea dance on Saturday. New Orleans Burlesque performers Ramona Rose and Fox Monroe host a โ€œBack to the Futureโ€ themed trivia show also on Saturday, and there will be photo ops with the DeLorean time machine, scavenger hunts, film-specific cosplay meetups and other events throughout the weekend.

Thereโ€™s also plenty happening outside of โ€œBack to the Future.โ€ This yearโ€™s Fan Expo โ€” organized by a group producing fan conventions across the country โ€” will feature interview sessions with Andy Serkis, William Shatner, Heather Locklear and Giancarlo Esposito.

Actors Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum will read scenes and tell stories from the TV show โ€œSmallville.โ€ Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch will talk about their titular roles in โ€œSuperman & Lois.โ€ Plus, actors Brandon Routh and Dean Cain, who both also played Superman, will be at the convention.

โ€œHazbin Hotelโ€ creator Vivienne Medrano and voice actors from the adult animated comedy will take part in panels, and other events will feature actors from the Dragon Ball anime series, โ€œOne Pieceโ€ and โ€œMy Hero Academia.โ€ There also will be panels and workshops focused on accessibility at fan conventions, the film industry in New Orleans, the history of horror comics and more.

Cosplay workshops and meet-ups run throughout the convention. The weekend includes podcast recordings, karaoke sessions, video game tournaments, a Comics and Cocktails happy hour, drag bingo, foam sword fighting, artist competitions, table top gaming and more.

Several New Orleans fandom organizations also will be present, including the local Star Wars-themed 501st garrison, the Louisiana Ghostbusters and the Krewe of Japan. Two post-expo parties also are planned: The group Anime Soiree will host the Dimensional Dance Party at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at the Howlinโ€™ Wolf, and there is the Purikura Panic After Party at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Rabbit Hole.

It was almost kismet that Wells ended up in โ€œBack to the Future.โ€ Wells was cast as Jennifer across from Eric Stoltz, who was originally hired to play Marty. But soon after the audition, a television pilot for โ€œOff the Rack,โ€ which Wells had filmed the previous spring, was picked up by ABC and suddenly she had to pass on โ€œBack to the Future.โ€ Wells went on to film six more episodes for the TV comedy with Ed Asner and Eileen Brennan, while โ€œBack to the Futureโ€ began production.

Over on the film set, though, things with Stoltz werenโ€™t quite working out and the part of Marty was recast with Michael J. Fox. Because of the break and a desire to have a love interest closer in height to Fox, Wells was called back to play Jennifer.

โ€œFans have expressed to me how important the role of Jennifer was,โ€ Wells said recently from her home in Los Angeles. โ€œIf Jennifer hadnโ€™t signed โ€˜I love youโ€™ with the phone number on the clock tower flyer, Marty wouldnโ€™t have had it in the โ€™50s to know when the [lightening] was going to stop the clock โ€ฆ And other people have pointed out that โ€˜Marty really got through it because of his love for you.โ€™โ€

For Wells, participating in these fan events has been rewarding. She says she loves hearing about what โ€œBack to the Futureโ€ has meant to people who grew up with the film, but it has also given her a chance to become closer with fellow stars Christopher Lloyd, James Tolkan, Donald Fullilove and Lea Thompson.

โ€œWeโ€™re a bit of crew, a bit of a family, and theyโ€™re very special people to me,โ€ Wells says. โ€œWe share this camaraderie of having all taken part in this amazing experience. As fun as it was to do the movie, for me, the most fun is what the movie has provided as part of my life today.โ€

Fan Expo tickets are $39-$60 per day and $89 for 3-day passes. Find more info at fanexpohq.com/fanexponeworleans.

๏ปฟWe want to personally invite you to a special gathering this Sunday, January 12th from 12 - 3 pm to celebrate James Macdonell's inaugural museum exhibition at the Ohr-O'Keefe Museum in Biloxi, and carnival season with a King Cake celebration at our art and antiques-filled home at 2326 Esplanade Avenue.

You may have heard of the dynamic musician James Macdonell p/k/a as Jimmy Mac of the band Loup Garou. For over 2 decades Jimmy has inspired so many with his energetic and evocative zydeco influenced music.

But here's the news: for the last 20 years he has been working in his studio on Elysian Fields producing thought provoking, original and unique artworks. On Thursday, January 16th, he will open his exhibition for public viewing at the world's leading architect Frank Gehry designed Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi Mississippi titled: Safe Passage.

In addition, Jimmy will be signing copies of his new book James Macdonell: Retrospective 2004-2024 published by Artvoices Books Publishing. The book is scheduled to be released Worldwide on April 22nd, 2025, but you will have an opportunity to get an advanced signed copy at the museum exhibition.

Please send an email to jnathan.ci@gmail.com to RSVP for this celebration.

We look forward to sharing James Macdonell's art and book in a city that should be better known for its ever evolving contemporary art scene that complements its legendary cultural history.

See you on the 12th,

The Jump Hounds

The Jump Hounds is a New Orleans-based sextet that specializes in โ€˜jumpโ€™, the jazz-based rhythm and blues that bridged the gap between swing and rock & roll. To keep this often-overlooked style of music alive, the band plays a mix of Jump Era classics and original compositions within the idiom. The result is a repertoire that balances energetic up-tempo numbers, slow blues, and cozy mid-tempo swingers. This breadth of material makes for dynamic live shows that are tailored to the audience.

NATIONAL MARZIPAN DAY

Join millions of people across the nation on January 12th as they participate in the annual National Marzipan Day. On January 12th, the celebration kicks off with creatively formed confections that delight the eyes and mouth!

Marzipan is a confection made primarily of sugar or honey and ground almonds for anyone who does not know. It is also sometimes augmented with almond oil or extract. Candy makers use this sweet confection to make a variety of sweets. Some of them include:

  • Marzipan-filled chocolate
  • Small replicas of fruits and vegetables
  • Rolled into thin sheets and used as a glaze for icing cakes

Some people also create miniature marzipan animal figures, incorporating them into New Year's Day celebrations and traditions.

Which organ is naturally offset toward the left side of the body?

Liver

Gallbladder

Brain

Heart

The organ naturally offset toward the left side of the body is the liver.

Explanation: While the liver has a large right lobe, a smaller left lobe extends slightly toward the left side of the body. The other options listed are all predominantly located on the right side (or in the case of the brain, centered).

Spasm Band

Kids have been playing music on the streets of New Orleans for as long as anyone can remember. Sometimes itโ€™s nothing more than a drumline โ€“ several drummers banging away on a variety of plastic buckets and containers. More often than not they resemble this group of young men. Often misidentified as โ€œbuskers,โ€ which is a single street musician, the term for these eclectic groups is โ€œspasm band.โ€

The moniker โ€œspasm bandโ€ is applied to any group whose musical instruments are made from objects not normally associated with making music. According to The Dictionary of Jazz, the first spasm band was formed on the streets of New Orleans in the late 19th century. Among the earliest organized spasm bands was the Stale Bread Spasm Band formed in 1895.

The unidentified group below appears to have only two musicians โ€“ the trombone player at bottom center and the percussionist on the right. The other fellows were more than just moral support โ€“ their clapping and dancing helped set the mood for passersby as well as collecting the gratuities the group might attract.

Three gentlemen standing in front of their truck outside of the French Market. The truckโ€™s sign reads โ€œJ. Mumphrey & F. All???? โ€“ St. Bernard.โ€ The remaining vehicles are all mule-drawn wagons. The sign on the top of the building is for Reuterโ€™s Seed Store. Although Reuterโ€™s was best known for their catalog sales, having a retail outlet at the farmerโ€™s market makes sense.

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

GW Fins Restaurant๏ปฟ

New Orleans shines brightest in moments of despair. We know thereโ€™s no way to get through hardship without coming together - that is a part of who we are. We are a city truly defined by community.

As we continue to hold the victims and their families of the New Yearโ€™s Day Bourbon Street tragedy in our hearts, we are proud to partner with the Louisiana Restaurant Associationโ€™s Fleur du Coeur: A Culinary Tribute.

From January 13-19, 2025, please join us and other French Quarter restaurants and bars in celebrating the vibrant culinary traditions of New Orleans while supporting the New Orleans New Yearโ€™s Day Tragedy Fund.

At GW Fins, all proceeds from the sales of one of our signature dishes, Lobster Dumplings, will be donated directly to the fund, which serves as a resource to provide assistance to the families of those whose lives were taken and those seriously injured or impacted by the tragedy.

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

Mon,January 13

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes theyโ€™ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.

The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.

Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.

And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.

Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.

Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Super Bowl LIX pre-game show features all New Orleans and Louisiana musicians

The NFL announced on Thanksgiving that the Super Bowl LIX pre-game telecast will spotlight singers and musicians from New Orleans and Louisiana.

Jon Batiste, who grew up in Kenner and attended St. Augustine High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, will sing the national anthem in the Caesars Superdome ahead of kickoff on Feb. 9.

Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, who grew up in Treme, will team up with contemporary Christian singer and Lafayette native Lauren Daigle to perform "America the Beautiful." They have previously made guest appearances with one another onstage and on recordings.

And contemporary R&B singer Ledisi, who was born and raised in New Orleans before moving to California, will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."

โ€œWeโ€™re honored to work with this yearโ€™s pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state,โ€ said Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the NFL, in a news release. "The Super Bowl is a rare moment to unite fans around the world, and this yearโ€™s performers will bring the energy, soul and vibrant sounds of the region to a global stage, as we kickoff Super Bowl LIX with a celebration to remember.โ€

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.

A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

Courtesy of Jefferson Parish

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.

The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.

Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.

"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
