NATIONAL IMAGINATION DAY
January 19 is National Imagination Day to celebrate the playground of the mind and the power of using your imagination to create endless ideas.
Everyone has a little spark inside of their mind where endless possibilities meet between creativity and reality. Where imagination paints a picture of an unseen idea, bringing exciting possibilities to the forefront of our mind. For many people, using their imagination is what drives their creative thinking to help them thrive and excel. So, what is so special about using your imagination and why is it important?
Whether we realize it or not, our brain is a creative organ that runs on concepts and ideas. We fuel it with new and exciting thoughts created from our imagination and allow our minds to run wild. Learning to embrace our imagination feeds our thinking process and encourages our imaginative mind to never stop learning. The more you use your imagination, the stronger your brain becomes.
Through the Eyes of a Child
Children have vivid imaginations. It's what makes being a kid so much fun. As adults we encourage them to turn a simple bath towel into a superhero cape to rescue a stuffed animal from danger. We tell them to take a ride on the back of a unicorn made from a stick of a tree and fly to their cardboard castle to fight off dragons. Through our encouragement, we help them creating magical opportunities for development in their little minds for:
- Problem-solving
- Critical thinking
- Social
- Cognitive
- Independence
Children have been using fairy tales and stories to enhance their imagination since the beginning of time. Up until the 18th century, these tales were mostly verbally told. Early tales were often used as a way to entice children to behave or listen. They also contained religious themes and moral values. Though children books were printed as far back as the 16th century, written literature for children didn't become popular until the 18th century. Books like Tales of Mother Goose (1929) by Charles Perrault, Lessons for Children (1778) by Anna Laetitia Barbauld, and A Christmas Carol (1848) by Charles Dickens were among a few of the more popular written among families.
FREE Books
Today, there are thousands of books available in almost every genre ready for a child to entice their imagination. The National Literacy Trust provided a recent report stating that 1 in 5 children do not have access books. Sadly, these children get little to no chance of imagining far away places where fairies and gnomes sprinkle magic in a forest. Thankfully, there are organizations that will provide books to kids!
You can never get enough books into the hands of enough children. ~Dolly Parton~
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is an organization that loves to inspire reading. This amazing organization gifts books free of charge to children 0-5 years of age. Funding for this program comes from Dolly Parton herself and partners found in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia and the Republic of Ireland. What started out as a small project to provide books to her home county has turned into giving over 2 million books to children everywhere.
We spotlight and feature Dolly Parton's Imagination Library because we take inspiration from her and what she is giving to kids everywhere. Besides her larger than life personality, her passion to provide books to kids around the world gives National Day Calendar inspiration to keep spreading kindness, too.
FIND YOUR IMAGINATION
Whether you are an adult or a child, using your imagination is essential for growth. Dreaming up an idea leads to amazing innovation. There are endless possibilities to help you celebrate the precious gift of imagination!
- Write stories, draw pictures, play music, sing or dance, or build something.
- Read! Take a trip into a world of fantasy by reading about castles, dragons, and magic.
- Play! Taking a walk on a path through the woods can transport you to a time where mystical creatures live among the trees! Listen to them talk to each other and create your own animal language, too!
- Surround yourself with creative thinking people. Creative people are always thinking of new ideas and can spark your own imagination to go places it never dreamed of.
- Spend time every day daydreaming. When you let your mind relax and wonder without restrictions, you enhance your imagination.
- Share your imagination with those around you on social media using the hashtag #NationalCreativityDay.

GW Fins Restaurant
New Orleans shines brightest in moments of despair. We know there’s no way to get through hardship without coming together - that is a part of who we are. We are a city truly defined by community.
As we continue to hold the victims and their families of the New Year’s Day Bourbon Street tragedy in our hearts, we are proud to partner with the Louisiana Restaurant Association’s Fleur du Coeur: A Culinary Tribute.
From January 13-19, 2025, please join us and other French Quarter restaurants and bars in celebrating the vibrant culinary traditions of New Orleans while supporting the New Orleans New Year’s Day Tragedy Fund.
At GW Fins, all proceeds from the sales of one of our signature dishes, Lobster Dumplings, will be donated directly to the fund, which serves as a resource to provide assistance to the families of those whose lives were taken and those seriously injured or impacted by the tragedy.

It's hard to ignore data showing this more as snow event rather than sleet and snow. This simply means snow totals could be higher and potentially historic for some. Right now, we are still days away and we aren't 100% sure how the snow/sleet evolves Tuesday, but the ceiling for this event could be something astonishing. Regardless, this one looks like a doozy. Impacts will be felt Tuesday, Wednesday and even Thursday morning isn't out of the question. While the snow will end Tuesday night, it will take days for snow/ice to melt especially if this system over performs. Will update snow totals tomorrow if data continues to show more snow. | |

We are calling on our community to temporarily foster a shelter dog before frigid temperatures hit our area Tuesday night and through the week!!
While the dogs have an inside area that can be enclosed during freezing temperatures, our building is still 70+ years old and of substandard condition making it difficult to keep the runs warm the entire night. This temperature drop will be significant and the lowest we have seen in quite some time so getting the dogs out of the shelter and into safety is our top priority!!!
**Our shelter cats are in better housing suited for the cold, but they too are available to take home temporarily.
Visit the shelter Monday, January 20th 9 AM - 4 PM. Our dedicated staff and volunteers will be on-site to assist you in finding the perfect furry guest for your family.
Our goal is to ensure 100% of the animals find warmth and love in temporary homes. We provide all necessary supplies, including food and kennels, at no cost to you.
Your support is crucial – thank you in advance!!!

ultroneous
/ˌʌl.trəˈoʊ.ni.əs/
Definition: Referring to something done voluntarily or of one's own accord; characterized by a spontaneous or unprompted nature.
Origin: Derived from the Latin word "ultroneus," meaning "spontaneous" or "voluntary," which itself comes from "ultra," meaning "beyond" or "beyond the usual."
Example: The committee's ultroneous decision to hold an extra meeting surprised everyone, as it was made without any external prompting.
"Voluntary" encapsulates the essence of "ultroneous," reflecting actions taken freely and willingly, without coercion or obligation. When something is described as ultroneous, it suggests a spontaneous choice made by an individual or group, driven by personal initiative rather than external pressure. This notion of voluntary action emphasizes autonomy and the power of individual decision-making. In many contexts, ultroneous acts are viewed positively, celebrated for their genuine nature and personal commitment. Thus, understanding "ultroneous" as inherently voluntary highlights the importance of self-directed actions in various aspects of life.

NATIONAL POPCORN DAY
On January 19th, National Popcorn Day pops onto the scene with a crunch we all love to enjoy! The annual celebration recognizes a treat that satisfies munchies, day or night.
This time-honored snack can be sweet or savory, caramelized, buttered or plain, molded into a candied ball, or tossed with nuts and chocolate. However it is enjoyed, enjoy it on National Popcorn Day, January 19th.
The word "corn" in Old English meant "grain" or, more specifically, the most prominent grain grown in a region. When Native Americans introduce their most common grain, maize, to early Europeans, they aptly applied the word "corn."
As early as the 16th century, the Aztecs used popcorn in headdresses worn during ceremonies honoring Tlaloc, their god of maize and fertility. Early Spanish explorers were fascinated by the corn that burst into what looked like a white flower.
Popcorn started becoming popular in the United States in the middle 1800s. It wasn't until Charles Cretors, a candy-store owner, developed a machine for popping corn with steam that the tasty treat became more abundantly poppable. By 1900 he had horse-drawn popcorn wagons going through the streets of Chicago.
At about the same time, Louise Ruckheim added peanuts and molasses to popcorn to bring Cracker Jack to the world. Then in 1908, the national anthem of baseball was born. Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer wrote Take Me out to the Ballgame. From that point onward, popcorn, specifically Cracker Jack, became forever married to the game.
At the Movies
Another romance connected to popcorn may have had a slow start but eventually took off. Today, who can imagine going to the movies without getting a box of buttered popcorn? While popcorn was an economical choice for snack food, the expense of installing a machine and adequately venting the building didn't seem worth the effort. If it weren't for Glen W. Dickson, we would be purchasing our popcorn from a vendor on the street before taking in the show. Dickson put in the effort and expense of placing machines inside his theaters. After realizing how quickly he recouped his costs, other theater owners followed suit.
The microwave oven spurred the next big advancement for popcorn. With the invention of the microwave, a whole new market opened for the snack food. Magnetrons, a technology produced by Raytheon Manufacturing Corporation for the military during World War II, were later used to develop microwave ovens. Percy Spencer was the man who made it happen. He used popcorn in his initial experiments during the microwave's development.
Today, Americans consume 13 billion quarts of popcorn a year, more than any other country in the world. A majority of the popcorn produced in the world is grown in the United States. Nebraska leads the corn belt in popcorn production.

New Orleans Public Library
Happy Birthday to the New Orleans Public Library! In 1896, Mayor John Fitzpatrick sponsored legislation that consolidated the Fisk Free Library housed in St. Patrick's Hall on Camp Street with a new municipal library. They eventually relocated to this building in 1908 on St. Charles Avenue at Lee Circle, stocked with more than 35,000 volumes, courtesy of philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Sadly, the building was demolished in 1960 and replaced with a modern office building for the John Hancock Insurance Company that is now known as K&B Plaza.

We look forward to seeing you at A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM!!
Adapted and co-directed by John Wesley and Courtney Calato Lee, in conjunction with the Louisiana Shakespeare Company, "A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a whimsical comedy by William Shakespeare that intertwines the lives of humans and fairies. Set in a forest near Athens, the play follows four young lovers and a group of amateur actors who become entangled in the magical mischief of the fairy realm. The mischievous Puck, under the orders of Oberon, the fairy king, uses a love potion that causes chaos and comic confusion among the characters. Themes of love, transformation, and the interplay between reality and fantasy are explored through witty dialogue and enchanting scenes. The play ultimately concludes with harmony restored and multiple marriages, celebrating the joyful complexity of love and imagination.

2025 NOCCA King Cake Menu
- Gluten-Free Cinnamon: This is ideal for anyone who loves the taste of a classic New Orleans king cake but can't do gluten. Soft and pillowy inside, with a not-too-sweet cinnamon ribbon and crust, vanilla glaze, and shimmery edible glitter, this is a cake for everyone to enjoy!
- Satsuma Almond: This king cake is made with rich almond paste and tart, tangy Louisiana satsumas. It's braided with a brioche-style dough, glazed with even more satsuma, and dusted with purple, green, and gold edible glitter. Give it as a gift or enjoy it yourself.
- Salted Caramel Apple: This king cake is spiced apples and lightly sweetened cream cheese in a brioche dough, glazed with salted caramel, and finished off with crunchy caramel bits and edible glitter. It's like a whole Carnival parade in a box, and is available through January 26, 2025.
- Additional limited-edition flavors will be announced at a later date, including a special Valentine's Day King Cake.
All proceeds support NOCCA's Culinary Arts program, helping cultivate the next generation of New Orleans culinary talent. The partnership with French Truck Coffee adds an extra dimension, with their special "Big Chief" Carnival blend benefiting the NOCCA Foundation.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,January 13
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

"A joyously mad evening of comic theater [...] The play ends and you ask yourself, 'Where do we go from here?' Perhaps that's just the
political question we all need to be asked
right now."
-James Wilkinson, Boston Stage Notes
Timbuktu, USA offers a refreshingly absurd portrait of American systems of power. Originally written in the immediate aftermath of Donald Trump's first inauguration, the play tells the story of Kelly Kilkenny, a decorated career politican who formulates a devious plot to attain the ultimate seat of power – the American presidency. Will Kilkenny manage to claim what's rightfully hers, or will the men (and the monkey) in her life prevent her from claiming the highest seat in the land? More information, including cast and crew, is available at Intramural Theater's website.
A Regional Premiere
Written by Ken Prestininzi
Directed by Elizabeth Frenchie Faith
Presented at The New Marigny Theatre
2301 Marais St., New Orleans
Fri., 1/24 - Mon., 1/27 @ 7:30PM

$25+ Tickets (no one turned away for lack of funds)
Pay-What-You-Can: January 24th
TICKET PRICING: Part of Intramural Theater's core mission is to
keep live theatre accessible for all community members,
regardless of their financial means. With this in mind, we maintain a General Admission price of $25 for all shows (about 40% of the actual cost per seat), along with a "No One Turned Away for Lack of Funds" policy. In order to make this a sustainable non-profit business model, we use tiered pricing. Those who have the means are invited to pay more for their ticket. If you decide to pay more, your ticket will not be different from any other, but it will ensure that we are able to keep ticket prices affordable for all. The additional cost of your ticket will subsidize all tickets that are $25 and under. We thank you for valuing local, original theatre.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Super Bowl LIX pre-game show features all New Orleans and Louisiana musicians
The NFL announced on Thanksgiving that the Super Bowl LIX pre-game telecast will spotlight singers and musicians from New Orleans and Louisiana.
Jon Batiste, who grew up in Kenner and attended St. Augustine High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, will sing the national anthem in the Caesars Superdome ahead of kickoff on Feb. 9.
Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, who grew up in Treme, will team up with contemporary Christian singer and Lafayette native Lauren Daigle to perform "America the Beautiful." They have previously made guest appearances with one another onstage and on recordings.
And contemporary R&B singer Ledisi, who was born and raised in New Orleans before moving to California, will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."
“We’re honored to work with this year’s pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state,” said Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the NFL, in a news release. "The Super Bowl is a rare moment to unite fans around the world, and this year’s performers will bring the energy, soul and vibrant sounds of the region to a global stage, as we kickoff Super Bowl LIX with a celebration to remember.”

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.
Courtesy of Jefferson Parish
The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
