I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry

NCH #351

I was there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be

there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you

were baptized, to see your life unfold.

I was there when you were but a child, with

faith to suit you well; I’ll be there in case you

wander off and find where demons dwell.

When you found the wonder of the Word, I was

There to cheer you on. You were raised to praise the

living God, to whom you now belong.

Should you find someone to share your time and you

join your hearts as one, I’ll be there to make your

verses rhyme from dusk till rising sun.

In the middle ages of your life, not too

old, no longer young, I’ll be there to guide you

through the night, complete what I’ve begun.

When the evening gently closes in and you

shut your weary eyes; I’ll be there as I have

always been with just one more surprise.

I was there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be

there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you

were baptized, to see your life unfold.

*Opening Prayer (in unison) by Carol Penner       Daryl Denelle, Ministry Intern

God of the open road, God of the twisting path, God of the narrow and upward way, your people are gathered for worship! In this hour, give us provision for the journey, courage and faith and compassion, and endurance to face any hardship. Open our eyes to see you walking beside us, protecting us, encouraging us, loving us. We pray this in the spirit of Jesus…

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father* who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

*Please feel free to pray as you wish. We respect tradition  — and we welcome images of the Divine that are diverse and inclusive.

HCC Covenant

We promise to walk together in Christian love, cherishing the presence of God the Creator, Jesus the Word, and the Holy Spirit, our Counselor and Comforter. Seeking God’s will for our faith community, the human family, and all of creation, we agree to give witness to the life and teachings of Jesus, our risen Savior, and through our actions and ideals, invite the world to a deeper love.

With the Spirit as our guide, we promise to be faithful in worship and support of Hingham Congregational Church, United Church of Christ. We aspire to offer all that we are and all that we have for the fulfillment of God’s Realm of justice and peace. We warmly welcome all, without judgement, to accompany us on this journey, embracing diversity of belief, respecting freedom of conscience, and striving to become more deeply aware of the grace of God.

Welcome and Blessing

We pledge to you our concern, our help, and our prayers, that you may continue to grow in your knowledge and love of Jesus Christ. God grant that loving being loved, blessing and being blessed, serving and being served, we may be united as the body of Christ.

Ministry of the Word

Scripture Reading: 2nd Corinthians 4:13-5:1

Tracy Allen

But just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture—‘I believed, and so I spoke’—we also believe, and so we speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.

For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

Thank you, God, for life in the Spirit of Jesus; for love that cannot die; for peace

the world cannot give; for joy in the company of friends; for the glory of creation;

for the mission of justice you have made our own. Give us the gifts of this Holy

meal: oneness of heart, love for neighbors, forgiveness of enemies, the will to

serve every day, and life that never ends. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen

Now in the Days of Youth

NCH #350

Now in the days of youth when life is filled with choice,

when hope and doubt touch every hour, when all thoughts find a voice,

We turn, O God, to you for guidance and for grace.

In all our days, in all our ways, help us to seek your face.

Teach us to use our lives with purpose and with power

for visions of a better world and for decision’s hour;

To choose the way of life, reject the way of death,

until the radiant force of God fills mind and strength and breath.

Teach us to love in truth, to give and to receiver

with joyful and with open hearts, with all that we believe;

To seek another’s good, to honor what is right,

to let our will and our desire be held in holy light.

Teacher, Creator, God, enfold us in your arms;

be with us as we try our wings, and keep us safe from harm.

All good and perfect gifts come to us from your hand.

O help us use them carefully and live by love’s command.

Congregational Commissioning (in unison)

Brothers and sisters, may we leave this place of worship with

Christ’s spirit in our hearts. May we encourage the fainthearted: help the weak; practice patience with all; seek to do good;

rejoice always; pray without ceasing and give thanks in all

circumstances. For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for us.

Praise be to God!
