Summer Highlights
The Palos Verdes Institute of Technology (PVIT) Underwater ROV (remotely-operated vehicle) team won 4th place in the MATE (Marine Advanced Technology Education) World Championships held at East Tennessee State University in August. This engineering competition challenges high school teams to design, build, and test an ROV to navigate an aquatic environment and perform tasks that simulate real-world ROV explorations. 10th to 12th grade Seakings started preparing for this competition in 2019, which was ultimately canceled in 2020.
Despite a full year of online school, team members stayed committed to the program and worked individually at home and collaboratively over Zoom on a weekly basis. The hybrid opening in the Spring allowed the team to meet in person for the past couple months for long hours of testing and final preparations for the international competition. The team’s final score was based on their underwater mission runs, technical report, engineering interview, virtual reality assets, safety protocols, and poster display. The 2021 ROV team follows a strong legacy of PVIT ROV teams, being the sixth time the team has placed in the top five in international competition since 2012, and finishing in 1st or 2nd place in every Southern California regional competition over the last decade. Congratulations, Sea Kings!
